Don’t forget to plant some milkweed for the monarch butterflies that are becoming endangered in the USA because they only cocoon on milkweed…

Milkweed is poisonous in larger than 'once and a great while' amounts for grazing animals... Poisonings will occur in places where there isn't enough pasture to graze on. Admittedly, most grazing animals tend to ignore Milkweed in favor of other, better things to munch, but it can still be dangerous. Please take care!

It’s really really important to plant milkweed but it’s more important to find out what native plants the pollinators in your area need! Monarchs are important but so are thousands of other local pollinators - monarchs may not even migrate through certain areas.

Back in the old days, some homesteaders would give accounts that someone would want to buy their sheep. The homesteader would say no. The buyer would say but I would pay you money! The homesteader would say; “What do I need money for? I don’t need any money. “ We all need to learn to do this. I believe that learning this method is the key.

Paul Gautschi gave the best definition of Sustainable Permaculture for folk who need it spelled out in writing in my opinion and also Jeoff Lawton said if it is sustainable and it works for you then that's what matters most. We also have to remember that we're not all in the same climate or grow zones and sometimes people forget that very key bit of information. Gardener Scott brought this up in a video not to long ago. What works for you may not always work for everyone else due to where an individual's home space is on Earth. All good points and I love what your doing. Keep up the good work. Thank you and God bless you.

We appreciate you taking the time to do this overview. I think our favorite part of permaculture is that there’s no waste. The compost feeds our chickens, their waste feeds our soil and garden, our garden feeds us, and we give our scraps to the chickens. There are so many systems working together for the good of all involved! I do want to ask, we have goats, but have never had sheep, do they eat different things? In other words, would we benefit from having both? Thanks so much for sharing your passion and expertise for permaculture with the world!
@PermaPasturesFarm21
@PermaPasturesFarm21 4 жыл бұрын
Living Quite Simply I clearly should have consulted with you before making this video because your words provided the most elegant synopsis of what permaculture really is. We’ve had goats in the past but disliked the management requirements. These hair sheep eat nearly the same things as goats but do much better on pure pasture. A combination of both would probably be an excellent marriage!
@LivingQuiteSimply
@LivingQuiteSimply 4 жыл бұрын
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 You explained really well how all the parts fit together; we just shared the other side of the same coin. There are so many aspects of permaculture that make it worthwhile. It's interesting to hear about your take on goats vs. sheep, having experience with both. I assumed sheep would be so much more difficult to care for. I'm glad to hear that both can be useful on the same farm, because we've become quite attached to some of our goats, but you're really selling us on sheep.

@@PermaPasturesFarm21 We have had issues in the past with goats escaping, but since we’ve had them in an electic fence they’ve had a healthy fear of attempting escape.🤣 One of the things we love about goats is how well they can clean out areas that a cow wouldn’t touch, but having experience with goats and sheep, do you find that sheep do the same?
@PermaPasturesFarm21
@PermaPasturesFarm21 4 жыл бұрын
Living Quite Simply The goats are definitely a bit more efficient in clearing out certain types of brush but the sheep run a close second in my opinion. My biggest issue with the goats was with them constantly getting stuck in the electric fence or blasting right through it. There was at least 7000 volts going through that fence and they still didn’t care!

As someone who was an educator before getting my PDC, i have often pondered about how Permaculture is a hard thing to concisely talk about, especially with people who dont already understand ecology My working "elevator talk" definition of Permaculture is " a design philosophy which uses the mimicing of natural ecological processes to create robust resilient ecosystems designed and optimized for human use. We use biomicry to create human beneficial systems which are designed to intelligently use the processes Nature is already using to our advantage " If anyone has anything to add to this definition, or any critiques as to how to make it better, i am all ears!

Hi, I’m Amber. I love your video. I live where it’s so hot it’s dangerous to be outside in 100+ degrees. So, I decided to garden just a few veggies and leave it alone with the exception of watering. Last year I watched two different patches of lemon cukes grow. One with no weeds n one with “weeds.” With out weeds those did ok and died out with the onset of heat in June. The other thrived for 6 months! The tendrils took hold of the host weeds like a symbionts and I didn’t have to water as much. We had cucumbers until October. Unbelievable. Cool huh? North Texas hot long summers and this year is no exception. It’s a burner year so its 95 degrees by noon and 5pm is siesta time with some gypsy tea n cool nap. Sincerely Amber

I'm an ex-beekeeper and bee club president. I became anaphylaxis from being stung 12-15 times at once and since then I've been hospitalized twice. I hate it because I miss those alpha waves produced from bees. For small hive beetles, SHB, chickens are great! Also use the entrance reducer set at the smallest setting upside down so beetles can't just fly in. Also NEVER feed wet pollen only dry. I would mix mine with pro-form probiotics. Mites, varroa, aren't a by-product of SHB. They'll get mites from interacting with flowers or plants that other bees visited and left mites behind or interacting with other bees in the wild. The best treatment is oxacillin acid vaporization, OAV, using a vapor gun. The gold standard is every quarter using a different product and then OAV before winter. OAV will clean up the hive all together. I was in FL so we had different ways to prepare for "winter". If mites aren't treated bees will develop other diseases like K wing, get deformed wing virus, DWV, etc. I've heard stories of beekeepers selling the public bees where the "ants" chewed off the bees wings. That's not ants, its DWV. Choosing bees bred for high grooming, VHS, varroa sensitive hygiene, is also a great way to go. My bees would remove brood and clean comb where the mites were and not allow them to multiply. When brood are capped the varroa mite has an orgy party. It's why drone comb is sold. People will make an area for drones using the comb insert, and then freeze it to kill the mites reproducing in with the drones. I personally used it because I knew I had VSH bees and wanted my queens genetics to populate the wild bees and other's hives around, thus improving my queens genetics when they would mate with other colonies. I also monitored my colonies mite loads. Good video. I look forward to seeing more.

@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Newbie permie here, may I ask what you meant by "tethering required"...thank you.

@@mandiegarrett1706 sorry about that. When I mention tethering in these videos I’m typically referring to a “hot wire“ attached to an existing electric fence system.

I just found your channel listening to Living Free in Tennessee podcast. Great interview. Loved the video explanation of how you work with the natural tendencies of the animals to make the land better. Great display or rotational grazing too.

In the gardening institutes they teach you about absorption like in the example means of how you then can use what has to be described in detail after beginning anew with thoughts of the permaculture process basically non storage like programming they teach you I mean the branch through exposure to pollutions & what not so, that comment brought me here THANKS

❤ your videos! I am offering urban Permaculture tips. In Nashville TN some of your practices will work because the county and the city are one and the same. Per 1/4 acre you can keep 10 chickens, 2 goats, 1 mule!

I’m sure there are other comments that are the same, but there are 3 main principles of permaculture. Care of the earth, care of people, return of surplus (sharing back your abundance)
