Yeah but he's advising us on how to use gasket sealant, on an engine... everybody who turns wrenches knows it's best to get it done right the first time. I turned off this video after 4 seconds cause i knew i didn't want to trust this kid on how to seal my engine.. lol.. the goal is to not have to go back and redo the job. It's cute he's trying but right off rip he doesnt seem to be coming at me correct enough to trust him on this topic AT ALL.

Use the "Dab method" when applying gasket maker. Squeeze out a small amount on a peace of cardboard, then use one of your fingers to dab it on. You use a lot less gasket maker applying it this way, and also are sure to get a great seal. When it comes to gasket maker, more does not mean better.😉

Not criticizing you one bit, I’m genuinely looking out for you. You should be careful if it originally came with a crankcase gasket as the gasket also acts to space the cover from the crankshaft thrust surface. If you remove the gasket and go back together with only sealant, you are changing the thrust (end play) gap of the crankshaft. If it’s too tight, the crank and case cover can actually get too hot and destroy each other with wear. When you get them torqued, just make sure there is end play at the crank. The proper way to check it is to use a dial indicator but you may not have one. As long as there is a little bit of back and forth (in and out) movement, it should be ok. Again, I say this only to help you and not to criticize. Thank you for the video. That silicon is actually great stuff for sure. Most people pronounce it “perma-tex” but I know exactly what you mean. To add to Brett's comment (excellent), the reason you torque to a specific value is to stretch the bolt a specific amount. That resists any practical forces trying to separate the surfaces. It acts as a spring. Good video. Thank you.

You should attempt to apply in the middle of surfaces needed to be sealed. Wait an hour then check silicone that squished for firmness if it’s begun to set a

I put the silicon on my primary cover on my harley. I put oil in after about two hours of primary cover being installed. You think its still okay?

Great Video. However the Ultra black should never be used to seal the case halves together. Also is ok to use them on a paper gasket, but never as a paper gasket replacement. If you want to seal two machined part that originally didn't come with a gasket, then use Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket sealant liquid.

Unlike the other guy, I am criticizing you. You need to clean the surface that the gasket maker is going on very thoroughly... and considering if this was someone else's vehicle, it would be back in less than a week from having the gasket blown out. Never spread it with your bare hand because you'll end up touching the metal on the part putting contaminant oil from your skin onto the metal itself disrupting the seal that you're attempting to make. I know this is an older video, but someone that may be watching this could be doing it the same way you are, and hopefully this comment will save someone else some time. When sealing anything, you're correct by saying to put sealant around the bolt holes, but you really need more than a super thin and spotty 1 mm thick layer; the layer should either be 1/8 or a quarter inch thick, wait for it to skin over, install, give time to cure, torque to spec. Done.

What's the point of doing it outside of the bolt holes? I don't think you need gasketing there, pre-formed gaskets go around the bolts for location, not sealing I think.

You should have circled the bolt holes as well so everything has an even pull not to mention a 2nd chance of not leaking in that area.

@@bhays1917 Having full circles around the bolt holes is a good idea. it’s more so you have even pressure all the way around the cover. If you don’t have gasket material all around the bolt holes, the cover could end up crooked.

You didn't let the gasket set up at all before attaching parts. The bead was not even close to even ANYWHERE. There is no way that this did not leak.

Oh my goodness... I don't mean to be mean, but you really should take this video down. It's great that you are working on these thing and willing to post videos. You are learning a lot and doing good... BUT, there are so many remarks that are inaccurate like "you can use any type" and using sandpaper and "super high torque is finger tight...
