The13th installment of my 5000 mile solo road trip to the Balkans on board the mighty BMW R1250 GS Adventure.
In this episode, I wake up in a bad way mentally - its not nice to watch but that's the reality of living with anxiety. However, my trusty steed pulled me from my funk and out down a beautiful road to a waterfall for some quiet reflection.
Permission to Torque is a Mental Health movement set up to show others that you "get it" by displaying a discrete symbol for others to take comfort in. Its not about sitting around in a circle feeling sorry for yourself, its about shared experience and getting out there to find out what makes us happy - this is the aim of my trip and why I am sharing it on KZbin, the good days and the inevitable bad ones too.
I hope you enjoy the journey with me and find it at least vaguely useful! :)

Helloooo! My sincere apologies for the sabbatical on this series, its back now and im going to get to the end! Please when watching this, before commenting, this was at a particularly bad time (now 8 months ago) when my anxiety was peaking. I have left this part in here because this trip is about the reality of mental illness and the often irrational thoughts and feelings that go with it. So, before commenting about how hard and cool you are, take a moment and recall a time when you were not thinking rationally, how things were overwhelming, and then consider your response. Much Thankings ✊💦

First and foremost I'm glad you're still alive and kicking. Was getting a bit concerned to be honest (I think it was your previous video that I commented on) Anxiety, depression and self doubt are horrible things. I've seennitbfrom all angles as I suffer myself, have family who suffer and have also worked as a counselor with people who suffer. You'll get people telling you to "man up" "sort your s#!t out" etc bit the only thing that you can really do is take time out as only you know how you really feel. I know you feel alone and having us lot isn't really the same as having company with you but, if you need to reach out to any of us I'm sure we'll all be here for you Stay safe..🤪

When I went to school some guys I thought who were my friends started bullying me for no apparent reason other than their personal entertainment. It didn't end well and I became quite a hermit. After that, every time I heard someone laugh, I thought that person was laughing about me. Took me a few years and a couple of genuine friends to finally get over that.

Hi Chris. The evolution of BvG, from hiding behind a helmet for years to now totally exposing yourself (not your willy though) is commendable. I'm one of the many that have been silently with you the whole time. May your BvG content continue for the foreseeable future, in whatever format you want to show it.

Can't have been easy to edit something so personal and put it out into the world. One thought. Inspirational doesn't mean have to mean something is happy and lovely and shiny. It's inspiring to see someone who is so self-aware (imperfectly I'm sure) and then able to communicate so directly and clearly (even if you don't think so). Your sense of humour helps :-)

Chris. You have nothing to be ashamed of. I’m right alongside you when it comes to using motorcycles as therapy. They give those of us who are lucky enough to have one of these amazing contraptions in our life the ability to take time. Time to be selfish and process the world around us, it’s events and it’s impact on ourselves. I fully champion your reasons for the whole Permission to Torque series and ethos, I’ve been in a very similar place. As I’m sure more than a few of us have been. The fact that you are willing to put this all out there is a massive leap into the unknown and takes some huge minerals. And your son will always be there for you because you clearly care deeply about him. Relationships come and go, sadly it’s part of life. But you’re being painfully honest with yourself about things and that is nothing short of heroic. We’re all here to talk, some of us nodding our heads in recognition of what you are going through. Don’t ever suffer alone, I’m sure there are plenty of people who would gladly sit and listen and I’m happy to add my name to the list. Take care.

All your issues are symptoms of a dysfunctional nervous system from childhood trauma and repressed emotions, buddy. Same as me, and a lot of other people. Look into it, it's very new science and most docs have no idea. Everyone thinks "my childhood was fine", but when you start digging you find all kinds of stuff, even birth trauma can do it. Irene Lyon's channel is a great place to start, or read "your body keeps the score". HTH

I think I'm similar to you in that I love solitude and being alone but I do also need a social element at times. Humans are social creatures afterall. I think a lot of solo travellers get around this by meeting people along the way. Which is nice, but it's hard if you struggle with anxiety. I think I have some level of anxiety, not on the level you experience so I only know how I think you feel. But I really respect that you actively make the choice to put this stuff out there and be honest with it. It takes a lot of courage to do that.

The majority of us don’t share our darkest/lowest moments with close friends and family, so kudos to you Chris for including it. I hope most of the feedback you get will be supportive and positive, getting through those difficult moments gives you more tools in your box to deal with future challenge so it’s all good. Just remember to breathe and enjoy the moment. Even your lowest point while travelling is 100 times better than being chained to a desk, watching your life tick away on the clock praying for 5 o’clock to arrive, like so many poor souls out there.

Chris, and everyone else reading this. I will explain exactly what you need to do get 100% better. 1. Slow down or stop drinking. It's killing you. 2. Start taking vitamins and minerals. Magnesium, ( blocks the receptors for depression and anxiety) 1000mg 2x per day, vit D. 2500 IU per day, B12, B1 and zinc. Drink a gallon of water daily and exercise, walk a few miles a day. Eat healthy, low carb and sugars. And ride your motorcycle daily. That's it. Problem solved. Don't take my word for it. Look it up yourself.

I think you need to see a good psychotherapist! I have a friend that is one and we often discuss people with depression and anxiety which seems to be a first world problem caused by having too much time on our hands to self reflect too much. In the third world people are far too busy surviving to become depressed even though they don't have your obvious life advantages. See a psychotherapist or as my father would say "PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER MAN AND JUST GET ON WITH IT".

Since I've started riding again, I sort of have devoured the 44teeth channel and then came over to "Barone di Grambolo". Of course I like Chris, otherwise I wouldn't be watching. Like many of you, after some time following somebody who shares your passion and also a bit of his life with you through a camera, you start to feel like you know them, as becomes very evident by the encouragement and compassion he gets in the comments. I'm sure Chris is great guy and buddy to have, I'd love to have a beer with him, but I also get the feeling that he can be a bit of a wanker and he moans a lot ; ) What I'm trying to say is, its obviously very easy to be understanding about someone who we know or who we think is similar to us. But everyday we encounter other human beings, strangers whom we might even view as strange or about whom we simply don't care, how we act towards them - even if it's an encounter of a few seconds, makes a huge difference. Especially when you consider, that these strangers - whatever their appearance or origin, may too feel anxiety and other issues. Your daily behavior or graciousness towards others has greater impact on their lives, than you might realize. I'm in Austria btw...

How weird! 10 years ago i started watching, laughed myself silly at the green laneing and then for some reason I stopped watching when it was just the commuting! 😪 I got myself GSXR, then a Ducati Diaval, then another GSXR and now i ride a Moto Guzzi V9 🤷‍♂ (I'm getting old!!) And then out of the blue I watch these.... I was in Mostar in the War and watched that bridge get smashed to bits... Watching through tears its great to see the rebuild and the banks of the river and the fact that Bosnia seems to be thriving - thank you 👍

I think you're doing well on this trip. I use my bikes as an escape from confronting my past. All my conversations while riding have come to an inevitable conclusion. Yours may not have done. I hope you can repair your relationship with your GF/exGF. Whatever repair means for you. I've repaired a lot of relationships with exGFs that have remained EXs. Maybe it will work better for you. I used to save up all my experiences that are supposed to be good memories and then later I can pretend they were as happy as they should have been. It's convincing to friends and family and sometimes I find I am convinced as well. I've done something as an American that I suspect you can't do. After writing a note to who ever was unlucky enough to find my body I came to realise how ridiculous I had become. Driven by my youngest girl (I swear she's clairvoyant) and my GP, the next week I sold all of my guns. Even my favourite Colt 1911A .45 Automatic. (I miss that gun) My mood lifted considerably then and there and has remained elevated ever since. I don't know what symbolic item a Brit can give up that would have an equivalent effect but it's all metaphor so if you apply yourself maybe you'll come up with something.

Oh man...i feel for you and you brought back some memory... was like 10 years ago, just brokeup, so i took some days off and went to France (because where else) on the GS, nothing too complicated 4 days i think. And on the first day she contacted me, still have the number, have to tight some loose end, and i think her whatsapp status or profile image was a nice picture of her in vacation... suffice to say was hard, but i did my best, enjoy my 4 days, and was the start of my proper mototravelling (will do my 4th time in 5 years to scandinavia (if all gose to plan...)this summer on the Old Aund (that's the GSA)). And have to say... motorcycling have been the best doctor (yes i do crunch some mile and it feels like i'm running away, but no harm in that!) and now it's the part of the package, if the other half want to come, no problem, but if she don't want me to ride, it's a deal braker!) Hope you feel well, or at least better! Even Man can love!

The warts and all approach is what makes this series inspirational. You are getting through to a lot of blokes. I comeplete get what you mean at around the 12 minute mark. I love solitude but I like people too. Quite simply, you just need the right people. For what help it might, or might not, be, have you ever thought about looking into the main type of male personalities. There is 5 or 6 of them. I did it and I found so many answers to long burning questions. It might be something to consider. Keep on going, bud. I'm enjoying your work immensly!

It doesn't matter how we feel, viewers will always find something interesting in your moto diary. It's your session and the journey of a lifetime. One tip, always eat traditional food or just taste it wherever you are, the food is also one way of experience, especially on such trips. Cheers

This might be an unpopular opinion, but my life is so much better without "women relationships" in it. I can do what I want, when I want. I don't have to answer to anyone. My life is my own and I love it. I feel that relationships are more trouble than they're worth. I've been single for some time now. I live on my own and life is just great. Relationships are overrated and I'm way happier without a woman in my life.

Well done you for staying out there. It’s a massive pull to just retreat when things go like that and to pull yourself into logical thinking is extremely impressive! Good man!

Hi Chris mate you looked so down at the beginning of that vid, I hope that 8 months on you are in a better place, the trip was amazing and had I been a lot younger it's certainly something I and many others would consider doing, thank you for the entertainment I hope you will be uploading further episodes if available.

There are so many golfs and VWs in Bosnia because there was a VW factory in Sarajevo back in the day. I think they specifically produced Mk. 2s there and i guess that culture/popularity of those cars kind of stuck around.

I love your videos. Your commentary is awesome. You sound like myself a lot of the time. The ride alongs are great and it’s also a bit of therapy session as well. We all feel like shit a lot of the times. It’s like, life’s a big shit sandwich and we all have to take a bite. But sometimes you feel like you’ve taken more than your fair share. Keep up the great work! Cheers.

Like the rest of us matey, you're only human. Says more about you as a person sharing your vulnerabilities. Feel your pain, been there and done it and it's never far from the surface. Focus on the positive and stay busy❤

The mk2 golf thing in bosnia is (from what I understand) because they made them there after the war, and if you managed to buy one, you had made it! and now it has become a cult symbol down there and everyone loves it...

Great video. Watching the series for the second time. Inspiring and interesting. I haven’t even passed my test, and I don’t actually own a motorbike (yet), but this series gives me very very itchy feet. Thanks for doing it👍🏻

I’ve written this several times and deleted it thinking it won’t change anything, I would like to say I understand how you feel but in reality I don’t, I have times when I’m feeling low and times when I’m happy, the majority of the time I feel anxious with zero confidence to do things and that gets me down, I’m not someone who can easily talk to people so I’m thinking that doing what your doing might help as I won’t have to talk to an actual person but I will still be able to get stuff out of my head instead of just letting it fester in my brain, I do tend to hide behind my helmet and when no one can see me I feel better I don’t really know why I’m even writing this but watching you has helped, your are an awesome guy with more inner strength than I can imagine having but you inspire me to be better, for that I thank you
