We dont have to go to this level in NewZealand, except getting council/engineering sign off for certain work, especially structural. I would guess though that we arnt far behind following Aussie down the path of courses and special insurances.

Shane I haven't yet done any projects that have triggered the OB threshold, but they're getting closer each time. There's a possibility I'll OB an extension in a year or so, and will need to complete the course before then. Until that time, if it's not technically required, do you feel there is any value in completing the course for somebody at competent DIY level, where the projects generally don't involve any external trades? Think decking/pergolas/tiling/etc etc type scale. I'm not sure how much of this is a "tick-a-box" exercise, and how much could be of real practical value.
@diyforknuckleheads8 жыл бұрын
Pete, where l found the course valuable was on the legality side of things as well as insurance requirements. The course really doesn't go into the act of 'how to build a house' It's more about coordinating the job effectively so that you don't get into trouble and you don't go broke. Cheers
@8860148 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shane, much appreciate that. At this stage I've decided to hold off on the course and think it's better to concentrate on the skills required that would otherwise be done by the various trades. Once I start bringing in others more regularly and/or it becomes a legal requirement to go down the OB course I'll jump through the hoops. Love your work mate, great stuff!

TAFE (At least in SA) has been dumbed down to "Technical/Training and Further Education" - no longer regarded as "tertiary". To overseas viewers, TAFE is Australia's Community College. Cheers again Knackers, looking forward to future updates. Edit: What counts as a "renovation", as in, what work undertaken requires all of this Owner/Builder process - I'm going to guess that varies state by state or council by council? Or is it an Australian standard?
@diyforknuckleheads9 жыл бұрын
TheApothecaryAus Any job over 10 grand (in Australia) takes you into the class of an Owner Builder. It's a real shame that they closed down a lot of the TAFE Instituions. I think there's a real need for them. Cheers mate.

I just completed the Owner Builder's Course with Absolute Education and was let down at the end when it stated that the last module can't be done online like we were led to believe the course was supposed to be in its entirety. There is an audio/visual component that you must complete with a series of ridiculous tasks. You have to either attend their office in person, do a facetime video with a trainer or record yourself and send it to them. ARRGGHH !! This is the last bit I have to do to get my certificate. I did the whole module set in one sitting and just ploughed through, despite 90% of the course having nothing to do with my project, which is a shed build. Go figure.. Took around 4 hrs. I'm so sick of Bureaucracy and red tape !

Hey Shane, Good video. It was no surprise to see all of the bureaucratic hoops you have had to jump through. I can understand the reasoning behind all of the steps necessary BUT!
