It’s better first marinate the chicken without onions, because onions will soak the marinade and when grilling the onions will burn !😊

Onions will not soak the marinade in any unhelpful way. In fact the onions will release juices and flavor the marinade and eventually the chicken. For any meat to absorb flavors it takes time. We remove the onions before grilling.
