The problem with the PSP Soundtrack isn't that it sounds too much like P3-5; it's that they're completely new tracks instead of based on the original and that they loop too much. They should have used similar melodies and base-lines for the new tunes, I'm sure then nobody would have minded even the added lyrics.

To add more context: Persona 1 PSP OST is so much more limited. It doesn't even feature half of the amount of tracks as the PS1 version does, and the PSP tracks loop in LESS than a minute, whereas the PS1 tracks could go as far as 5 minutes long without looping once!! Imagine if the FF7 Remake cut down half of the original soundtrack and replaced it with a random pop song. This is basically what is happening for Persona 1 PSP. The entire thematic continuity of the original OST is gone, whereas the PS1 version crafted many character themes to create a connection with them. The worst though, is that the PS1 soundtrack was led and mostly composed by Hidehito Aoki (Meguro was also involved), who died in a tragic car accident back in 2002. Shoji Meguro, both as the director of the Persona 1 remake and as its composer, just decided to scrub Aoki's entire legacy to add his own music, which he specifically said was for the sake of appealing to Persona 3 and 4 fans. I don't know what went through his head, but I find it a bit disrespectful that you would just throw away the work of a dead man for the sake of marketing appeal, thinking that his music is more important to draw in players. He was the director of the remake, he should have at least given the option to listen to the original music, but he didn't. This is sending a wrong message in my opinion, Hidehito Aoki was a legendary composer who did so much for Atlus (the soundtrack of Majin Tensei 2 is fantastic), his legacy shouldn't be erased like that. He didn't deserve any of this. There is a music patch to insert the PS1 OST to the PSP version, you should definitely go and use that. Unfortunately, the mod only replaces the existing PSP songs with the PS1 ones, which means we still have half of the OST missing. The entire PSP game would have to be rebuilt just to recover from the puzzling decisions Meguro did when it comes to the soundtrack.

I haven't played either versions so....both are good. ps1 version is much more atmospheric and is clearly made for a more serious tone which is something I guess the game is made for. PSP version feels like cut tracks from Persona 3 and has a completely different and lighter tone, tries to be too epic n direct while original is Much more mysterious and calmer and sad at times. It does sound good and something Id rather hear during battle moments and a few do outshine the original but it feels like its in the wrong era most of the times. if I had to choose then Id prefer the original because based on what I seen of the game, it works better and to me it just sounds better overall plus, I prefer atmospheric music over anything else when it comes to video games. Need something to pull you in which is what the original does. Its softer too and thats something I like about older music. New music tries to hit the eardrums too hard and give you headache eventually, old music sounds much more pleasant coz its also easier on the ears.

Anyone saying that the PSP version is better for listening needs to be suckerpunched HARD. The PSP version is obscenely generic neo-persona stuff that isn't even on par with P3 or P4. Along with the fact that the tracks suffer from being too short and looping too often to get any sense of satisfying progression or just satisfaction of listening to it in general. There's only a handful of tracks that I like and even then they sound like babby's first lo-fi shit (Which Meguro genuinely handled way better with Devil Summoner Soul Hackers btw), which doesn't even hold a candle to the original PSX tracks. The PSX version instead practically has Megaten, no, VGM OST GOLD ffs. Constant dungeon bangers and atmospheric stuff handled by several different composers as opposed to PSP's sole Meguroshit. The tracks varied yet still fit together to form a cohesive mesh of a single entity much better than the PSP OST. Way more energetic and jiving thanks to Kenichi Tsuchiya and Hidehito Aoki's (obligatory "may he rest in peace" statement) masterful work. Yeah Meguro basically took a backseat here with his parts of P1 PSX but at least all of his stuff is QUALITY instead of being mediocre to decent. He did a ton of Megaten PSX/Sega Saturn work with Soul Hackers though so it at least evens out.

The problem with the PSP soundtrack isn’t even the soundtrack itself so much as the way it’s used. It sounds great when consumed in a vacuum, but there are so few tracks that they’re reused constantly. It’s especially bad because they’re often used in scenes where they don’t work at all, simply because that tracks the closest to what the tone is meant to be. I imagine it was more expensive to create vocal tracks? It would have worked so much better if they’d actually kept most of the original soundtrack and sprinkles the new vocal tracks in places they’d work, instead of forcing them onto a game that largely doesn’t fit the tone the new soundtrack goes for.

PSX: Great inmersion and awesome sicro with story, but boeing as duck without any feeling on them (they dont make you feel nothing normally related with the situation) PsP: Zero inmersion and can get out of place, but its more dramatic and shares a better understanding about the situation and what is happening, as well as a feeling of determination to reach the end.

I wish they gave me the option to switch between. I think the OG fits Persona 1 better. It's a gloomy fucking game, this "fresh school days" J-pop doesn't really fit. Except for the battle theme. Persona 1 isn't focused on the school aspect of it and the PSP soundtrack misses the mark by 1000 country miles. I appreciate the work that went in to it, though.
@dumpsterplayer51336 жыл бұрын
The School Days theme for the most part was only used at the beginning of the game before shits happened, the travel theme is the primary theme for the game, and its atmospheric enough. The only issue is that A Lone Prayer doesn't work for the high encounter rate of the game (it get looped way too much, since battle are too common and too fast), and all the lyric are written with the SEBEC route in mind, so it doesn't really fit the SQQ (which actually uses a lot of PSX remixes for this reason).
@Demonix_Heller4 жыл бұрын
They did that for Persona 2 IS at least,giving the option of original or a remixed version of the original

@@dumpsterplayer5133 if i am right the reason SQQ has original song remix because it was done kenichi.
@dumpsterplayer5133 Жыл бұрын
@@unknownuser494 Meguro did the OST for the entire remake. SQQ got kinda shafted differently though since even though it does uses more PSX remixes, it threw away the actual Snow Queen theme entirely, and only kept the final boss track. P1 kinda needed a remake rather than just a HD port that was the PSP version. The soundtrack design showed that even internally, ATLUS considers SEBEC the main game and SQQ a side-quest, and it was obvious enough already just playing the game considering the effort it takes to trigger it.

The remake did have some good tracks, but they really repeat too much, and by half way through the game, I was very sick of the battle theme. I also think the original one suited the game better, as it gives it more of an 'apocalypse' feel. When I was grinding, I would just get a playlist of the original tracks and listen to that. It made it a lot less tiring, since there are a lot more variety of tracks in the ps1 ost.

I wish it was possible to choose between them, just like choosing the gameplay mode at the start of the playthrough. I absolutely adore the PSP OST, but it would be really cool to experience the game with the PS1 OST too.

The only real issue I have with the PSP soundtrack (which is still a big one) is that they cut out the Awakening theme completely, which hurts because it deserved to be a recurring track throughout the series like Aria of the Soul became but instead they CUT it from the remaster 😭

I like both soundtracks. I personally prefer the PS1 one, though (With the exception of the boss battle theme), since I prefer classic aspects of RPGs, but it has always seemed very interesting to me how weird the soundtracks of more modern Persona games sound, and I like that.

Gotta love the psp soundtrack. I get that people like the atmosphere of the PS1 but to not play the psp version because of it is insane. MY OPINION: i think there is no valid reason to hate this. The release dates for both games were different thus the ost change. the PS1 version was released in 1996 while the PSP version was released in 2009. that is such a huge year gap so thus the gap in the type of music used. and also to be honest, the ost in the ps1 version sets the atmosphere so no wonder why everyone's hating it.... please don't get offensive in this comment, it's just an opinion.

I think the psp music is good in a vacuum but there isnt a single thing about it that I can visualize fitting the tone and atmosphere of the ps1 soundtrack. The game fits the original soundtrack so much better its genuinely baffling that the psp soundtrack was even approved. I prefer the ps1 soundtrack even without the matching argument, but with that taken into account there is no question, though the psp music is very good.

Y’know I can’t really blame them for trying to make the Persona PSP remakes more 3 and 4ified, but it certainly lends itself to tonal disconnect between the music and the visuals

A combination of the two vibes would be nicer Tbh, P1 need some different vibes in modernity if they wanna remake it, meaning, no vocals during the battle scenes, it makes the grinding more pleasant really
@Maytag996 жыл бұрын
Both are good! However, I think the original PS1 soundtrack is quite a bit better, overall. It had a greater variety of music, was more atmospheric and fit the game better. It was a stellar soundtrack. The new soundtrack is quite good and features some amazing new tracks. I love new intro theme, and battle themes, lots of good new music. But it shows it's weakness in it's repetition of music, it just doesn't have enough music. I really recommend everyone play the original PS1 version of this game first, it's the way to go!

It would be great if a Persona 1 remake for the next generation of consoles would have both soundtracks from the PS1 and PSP versions! Wish Atlus could listen to the fans' voices and make it happen than milking P3, P4, and P5 to death. Still, the PS1 version of After The Disaster-Hospital version is terrifying for non-horror games in general.

Dungeon ~ 1st Ward School (Revisited) is my favorite theme from the PS1 version. Hate me if you want, but I don't like how that song was replaced with School Days in the PSP port. I'd go as far to say, the fact that the soundtrack was changed is a huge disrespect to the late Hidehito Aoki, one of the composers of the PS1 version. He would have never wanted such a thing to happen... Rest in peace mr. Aoki...

Honestly, I think P1P fits the game way better. Making music around the characters, not the world. They are more sad, rather then dark and dreary. It also removes the original battle theme that was just too much for a battle theme. It started annoying me after the 3rd battle. Enough to stop playing entirely. I'm playing P1P now, and the battle theme is so, SO much better.

This is what happens when you remaster soundtracks for a new age. The 90's game with the shiny new sound track has aged to become a 90's game with a mismatched 2000's soundtrack. In the end, the original soundtrack is superior because it's not as garrishly juxtaposed from the visuals and atmosphere of the game. Remakes and "refreshes" are not exempt from aging!
@RadicalCrabical Жыл бұрын

A lot of the remake songs sound like music that didn't make the cut for Persona 3 and 4 and not much effort to match the mood of the original tracks, but I don't think it's right to say it's a bad soundtrack outside the game. I heard the boss theme for the remake before and it is great to me, although I still don't feel like it matches the game's aesthetic well.
