The Phantom Thieves call Zenkichi "gramps" as a nickname since he's older than them, even though he says he "just as fly" as the kids.

No, Zenkichi isn't Ryuji's grandpa. The Phantom Thieves just all call him gramps because he's at the old age of 40-something.

It's a Japanese thing. Young people will call older people Uncle and Aunt, including and maybe most often, people they don't know well. Like calling someone "old man" or "old timer". Basically, if you don't know someone you call them by their apparent family position. Which creates the dreaded and unknowable invisible line where one day you are no longer "brother" but now you are "uncle" and then one day you're suddenly "Grandfather" You can also commonly refer to people you DO know by these words, but it's more of a case-by-case in those instances and a sort of vibe/feel thing between the people. If I recall, replacing the "-san" at the end with "-chan" is how you would indicate actual relation or close. Even in some families, if you have two older sisters but you like one more than the other, you might call one "Oneesan" and the one you like more "Oneechan". You can refer to a young man as "Oniisan" but don't call him "Oniichan" unless you want to get odd looks and depending on the situation, a visit from a nice police officer. And changing the honorific at the end to "sama" is basically considering them to be higher rank than you and being respectful, but you might be approached by a huckster on the street trying to take advantage of you and he'll throw "sama"s at you too. Anyway, he's the lists of words that no one asked for. -san: kind of a general honorific, neutral, the safe bet when you're not sure. -chan: to refer to kids, animals, cute things, best friends, girlfriend, ect..., can be insulting or complimentary depending on specific use. It's seen as feminine and cutesy. -sama: to refer to people higher rank than you like your boss, a teacher, someone older that you simply want to be respectful toward, generally used to show respect to someone. -kun: most commonly used to refer to young boys, but can be used in a business setting by a senior when addressing a junior male. -dono: it basically means "lord" and you won't be using this one outside of being sarcastic or being playful with friends, really. -senpai: to address someone who is a higher grade classmate or someone with more experience than you, like a senior at work or a veteran in a hobby you both share. -sensai: it means "teacher", you can figure out who you use this on... basically anyone teaching you something. When using it on someone that isn't a literal teacher it can be seen as being very respectful or complimentary, but you might get weird looks and sticking to "sama" might be better. If you're talking to someone close to you (relationship wise, not physically), you can drop the honorifics. Friendship can often go, "refer to them by their family name" > "refer to them by their given name with honorific" > "Just their given name, no honorific" Otousan - Father Danasama - Husband (Age is irrelevant with the husband and wife one, mostly) Okaasan - Mother Okusama- Wife Then you have the ages; Oneesan - Sister Obasan - Aunt Obaasan - Grandmother Oniisan - Bother Ojisan - Uncle Ojiisan - Grandfather However, you never refer to someone as; Otouto - younger brother Imouto - younger sister Unless you're being an asshole on purpose, then you could use those to taunt someone or mock them. Fun bonus, if you dislike the person you can call them "Kuso" and then then word. It is basically you call them a "Shitty" *insert word here" Kuso Jiji - Shitty man Kuso Baba - Shitty woman Kuzu - Trash or Worthless

I love how the point of the secretary’s death still being unjust is what drives home Akane’s frustration and her emotional intelligence. A lot of reactions I see from this scene is likewise confused on why Akane still hates her father’s reasoning until that point is brought up. She knows Zenkichi was protecting her, but she also knew that he sacrificed his values and the values of the law he swore to uphold. Not just towards her family but for so many others, she knows that this wasn’t an isolated incident and desperately wanted her father to realize that, and resented him when he refused to.

God, I love Strikers~! For being a "spinoff" game of Persona 5, it still retains the magic of its intense storytelling and character writing, which I'm so glad you two enjoyed so much~! I'm always down for more Persona reactions so you can continue seeing this amazing series~!

Zenkichi's persona is based on the character Jean Valjean, the protagonist of the famous novel Les Misérables. If you have read the novel you can notice some similarities between both characters and even his code name "Wolf" is what they call the criminals (like the main character) in the novel.

One big reason why Akane has such a broad perspective on injustice is that she is a RAVING Phantom Thieves fan as her normal self in the real world. While she wasn't in the original Persona 5, she directly references several of the changes of heart they did as inspirational to her - it'd make sense that she's very perceptive to evil in the world. I also love that Makoto (Biker gang chick) is the one who tells Zenkichi that his daughter is crying out to him because SHE lost her father at a really young age so she can actually sympathize with how much it hurt her and her sister.

8:54 "thers no saving her" Thats not Akane herself, thats her "SHADOW" A Shadow is part of yourself that you rather ignore, something that its hard to come to terms with, dark impulses represed feelings, Painful memories, desires you wish you didn' have. Everything that you despise about yourself, Thats your shadow. The voice that talked to Zenkichi was his own shadow, and by owning it and rebeling agains his predicament he awaken His "PERSONA"

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames yes thats what the Phantom Thives do. by infiltrating the cognitive world of their targets (palace/jail) defeat their shadow and steeling the distorted desires that corupt the target in the first place, causing a "change of hearth" But they CANOT kill their target's shadow, If they do that person its gonna have a mental shutdown and die. Even tho what happens in the real world influences their cognitive world and viseversa people are not aware of what actually happens there. Akane herself dosn't know about the cognitive world, let allone what her shadow is doing

Thats what the Phantom Thieves do They change people's hearths If they steal the distorted desaires that cause the distortion and defeat her shadow without killing it they can save Akane herself and all the people under her Jail influence. But they can't kill her shadow itself... that woud cause the real Akane to have a mental shutdown and die.

Strikers introduced one of my all time favourite characters zenkichi and his awakening is easily top 3 for me from the voice acting and valjeans speech always get me excited. “Do you finally see the truth, do you know the true face of the guilty, they condemn the good to slavery pretend they do not see their agony Just as you once did, but another story must begin. Now show you gaolers that you will wear a different chain. i am thou, thou art I. If you yet seek true justice we will see it done.” This speech is a 10/10 and perfect for me plus zenkichi saying seal the contract and yelling valjean is perfect

My sole regret in these awakening reactions of yours is that you will never get the fresh, intense experiences of these climactic moments again, and without the build up no less. I wish you two could have played these games proper, but hey, it is what it is, and im glad you enjoyed it :)

Well if it makes you feel any better, outside of maybe this one, the other awakenings we saw were so long ago, and we react to so many games and tv shows, that we probably won't remember all of them if/ when we do play the games 🤗

Something I always find pretty funny is that Zenkichi's English VA also voices Octodad, the main character of a silly game about a wild octopus trying to live amongst humans. XD

I remember the voice recording for the English release was delayed due to the COVID pandemic having just happened. The devs at Atlus sent the cast equipment to record from home. So if the recording quality between everyone sounded inconsistent, that’s why. This was done before the kinks of remote recording were ironed out.

@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames btw you already react to every persona user in persona 5 series and ultimate moves ( except sophia from persona strikers) But you two really need to react to every boss intro and defeat from persona 5 (10bosses )persona 5 royal (is a important dlc that ads more 3 bosses and new ending) and strikers (is basically persona 5 conclusion and have more 7 bosses) Is basically the only thing you never touch on this series

You really hit on a running theme of Strikers in general - just as the Monarchs of these Jails are victims of others in power trying to take advantage of them, these people still chose to wallow in their hurt and hurt others in return, and as much as Zenkichi had to point this out to the PTs, he needed to hear it about his own situation and come to a resolution to take up his justice again. For her part, Akane is something of a "Number One Fan" of the PTs, but the thing about her Shadow is that it's the deepest fear and/or resentment of the person, magnified and twisted within the Collective Unconscious (known in P5 as The Metaverse). It's fortunate that Akane is still quite young, so while she does have a Shadow it's not so fully developed by festering internal wounds as to turn into monsters the way that the other Palace rulers did (this also jibes with P4 in that a certain child gets stuck in that other world but the Shadow does not appear at all, meaning that both age and life experiences are required to manifest a Shadow). Akane is easily the most unique Shadow we've come across, to be sure, but fortunately there's no need for the PTs to intervene as her trauma is not only straightforward but also best worked out IRL (which is why she's the only one we never fight). Anyway, happy to see you finally reacting to THE BEST Awakening in the Persona franchise. I hope we get more adult Persona-users in the series going forward.

If I had a nickel every time Persona had a father and daughter who were trying to recover from losing their wife/mom in a hit and run, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it would happen twice. That said, it's cool that those situations are still done in a unique way and hit different emotional beats despite being so similar. Don't worry, Akane will be ok.

The Warriors games are my game of choice. Playing a warriors game right now. The dev that did Persona Strikers are the warriors guys. That's why it's an action hack and slash. Zucchini's pretty dope, he switches between the dark and light mode. In dark he boasts the highest power in the game by like a ton, but all attacks drain his health which is why in this clip he's dying despite not being hit. Light mode his hits heal him.

I believe they’ve mentioned of trying out a Final Fantasy game first. Unsure if it’ll be for a stream or just a playthrough. So Persona might not be on the table for a long while.
