I love how the lighting reveals all the imperfections of their faces rather than cover them as most directors would've done.

Thank you so much for posting this! I absolutely love Bergman's work, and this was the first scene I saw from him that really got me into all of his films... I've been trying to watch the rest of it online, now. His quote at the end, the whole concept of this repeated scene, is really such a beautiful explanation to his filming process. He's a true genius.

Bergman's film is impressive especially when he captured facial expression as we can see in "Persona": the eye in the darkness (of Liv Ullmann) ... I painted once Liv Ullmann's face in this scene when I was 15 or 16 years old. And then, I have loved Swedish language. Thank you for reminding me this film, werhwolfa. I'll go back once again to Ingmar Bergman.

Alma goes from being Elizabeth’s friend to being her mother figure. And then she is cured. She needs a mother to give her boundaries, not worship her, or use her as a place to confess or get validation. Alma is Elizabeth’s conscience. The nurse at the beginning of the movie is her ego.

According to Liv Ullmann, both shots of this scene were kept in the final cut merely because Bergman couldn't decide which one to keep, he loved both actresses' performances so much!

Through two scenes the two unite - a woman and her soul. A cruel and honest talk with one another. The soul got to her eventually.

This is how woman (Elizabeth) ıs reunited with her soul (Alma). Blood exchange literally fuses them in one persona. Elizabeth accepts her imperfect soul. She won’t ignore her with silence and hate anymore.

This movie is a completely prochoice movie. I hate to get political in any case, but this IS a prochoice movie. Thank God.

You didn't understand the movie, lol. The woman is distressed because of her sins. If anything, it's anti-establishment.

10 years later and you still haven't got it. You picked only at shallow surface (hating babies is not good), not the context in which it happened.
