A few decades ago, my brother bought a Grizzly WinMag in .45 Winchester Magnum. He swore that his semi-auto was superior in every way to my revolver, and that the .45 WinMag would replace the .44 Mag by the turn of the century. I remember splash and fast disappearance of the Griz 45 Win Mag. It had several big strikes against it. First was the over-sized 1911ish handgun so it was heavy and you needed huge paws to grip it. Second, was the much higher price for this one of a kind pistol. Third, as the saying going it was a solution looking for a problem. It wasn't THAT much more powerful as a 6" .44 Mag revolver. Also, around that time handloaders with Ruger Blackhawks in .45 Colt figured out they could beat .44 Mag power. The Griz was an interesting engineering idea but that's about it.

Good thorough subject coverage, as always Paul. I was thrilled 30+ years ago when the .32 H&R magnum came out, especially when Ruger and S&W chambered some revolvers for this new cartridge, but I only wanted a Smith 16-4 and couldn’t afford one, now they are unobtanium. Next the Hornady .327 latest and greatest came out a few years ago, “almost as powerful as a .357 and less recoil!” Recoil in a small frame Ruger SP101 was quite unpleasant. S&W produced a few J frames and Ruger is desperately trying to keep it alive, and Ammo is expensive and hard to find. What I am tying to convey here is there will always be a niche market for oddities, but will they become mainstream, who knows? I am crazy about my KelTec P32, should everyone carry one, nope but when I am going minimalist it works for me. My CZ52 and Tok M57 are a blast and could be used for defense in a pinch, however I’d rather have my Beretta 92fs or Sig P938 for serious work if I was out and about. At home it’s the Les Baer Prem II in .45 and a short 11/87 behind the door. Some folks need just one or two firearms for fun and defense, that’s what works for them. But me, I can’t have too many, so there is always room for another critter in my stable! New cartridges always peak my interest. Wants and needs are an an enigma, my wife calls it a disease.

The 32H&R was a fabulous round..the market is driven by advertising not practicality or ballistics. The more "Hype" the more people buy, then day out quickly (like the 327) .. The question is why carry a firearm with a frame size equil to one that exists (as In 30SC vs 9mm) but loss in terminal performance and bullet selection and ammo availability? It looks nice but there is no real logical reason to make that selection. 2/3 rounds extra? With lower performance? You'll need those extra rounds so it's a stalemate...IMO

A very thorough and detailed review of the .30 Super Carry round. Thank you, Paul. About your doubts about its future, I think I see a possibility for it. It would depend on some manufacturer coming up with a compact dual stack gun designed around this round. Hint, hint, Sig and FN! It could be a very small gun with 15 to 20 rounds in the magazine and ballistics very similar to the 9mm. Wow! I'm sure someone like Hornady or Speer could work out the expansion characteristics for the slug. However, if it remains just another odd round that can be chambered in existing frames, I'm afraid you're right. It'll just dry up and blow away.

If anything, coming out with 30SC during an ammo shortage eliminates one of the primary weaknesses of a new caliber over an established caliber - that being ammo availability and price. I'm of the opinion that federal made a huge mistake trying to compete with 9mm. If they had kept their loading pressures to comparable of .380, then they could have dug into the 'lower recoil, smaller gun' market. Lot of new, and specifically female shooters out there in real need of softer recoil in a gun that they can carry easily. Since Federal has explicitly stated that they're trying to target .380 prices, it wouldn't be a huge leap for customer who would have bought the .380 to choose a caliber of the same price, and same recoil that offered the opportunity to carry more rounds.

I'll admit it, when they announced 30 Super Carry, I was one of those ones who went, well why not bring 38 Super or .357 Sig or 40 S&W or to get really crazy 45 GAP into the modern era with updated guns instead of making a brand new caliber. Nothing's wrong with any of those calibers, they just need more modern guns. However then upon digging further into what 30 Super Carry is suppose to do and then I went, okay I was wrong, there is a point to this caliber, it's just not for me.

@TiglathPileser3 Glad your honest about it isn't for you. That said the 40 was not for me, 1911 platform all the way... I carry a 40 now. I've grown to enjoy the cartridge, even the platform. They used to carry 9's, which was a hell no for constant carry, still as a "church gun" it's fine.

I could see a sig 365 with two or three more shots pitting very well into my daily carry routine. Does that matter so does the standard. For me the number of rounds where I start to feel like yeah that's about right is 12 in the gun. More is always nicer but I wouldn't want a bigger gun to fit more. This cartridge makes sense for that but I think the support for it is going to be slim for a while. It's kind of like 327 Federal. If you like what it does and you reload or otherwise can ensure that you will have a decent supply of ammo then it's not that big of a deal once you have the components. I had a big pile of brass for this casting the bullets wouldn't be a big deal for practice ammo but this is the sort of caliber where the quality of the defensive projectile is going to make a bigger difference. 9 mm is already one of those calibers and this is going to be more so. If you're looking at something with more energy and mass like 40 Smith & Wesson just about any JHP will give you pretty good terminal ballistics. But something like this you'd have to have excellent bullets every time.

I was looking at .30 super carry as a more desirable round option to the .380, not as a replacement to the 9mm. Near same ballistics as the 9mm round as your video demonstrates, but with more capacity than a .380 pistol. If this caliber remains an option, I would not purchase the .380, but choose the more powerful, higher round capacity of the .30 super carry. The fact we don't, you'd have to extrapolate alot of the results to how similar are these pistols and build quality, and how much of this is just the round being fired. Taking another trip down Memory Lane, there's the 10mm Auto. At the time there were some very high horsepower figures in the firearms world touting this round. The FBI coverted to it, S&W and Colt made firearms for it, and there was the (as it turned out ill fated) Bren 10 ultimate defensive pistol made specifically for it. What happened? Well, the 10mm Auto turned out to be too powerful for the vast majority of applications, and difficult to carry and shoot well. It's the auto pistol version of a .44 Magnum in terms of recoil and pressure. It gave birth to the .40 S&W which dominated the law enforcement market for decades and is still in wide use today. The 10mm still holds on as an outdoorsman cartridge due to its performance on medium/large game, but that's about it. The .357 SIG, which is a fantastic round, also failed to catch on. However, recently we've seen the .300 Blackout, 6.5 Creedmoor, and a handful of others become commercial successes due to demand and successful marketing. The .30 Super Carry offers duty pistol level magazine capacities in a sub compact pistol size with a performance in those pistols very comparable to 9mm. Getting 17+1 rounds in a Sig 365 XL is very appealing, and with the explosion of Constitutional carry legislation being passed in 26 states so far it would seem to be poised for success. While I can't predict the future better than anyone else, I think it will catch on if the marketing is successful enough because it does offer a very useful answer to the capability issue that is often raised with compact and sub compact firearms. I've never complained about having too much ammo.

What I got from this is there is negligible difference in performance between .30 SC and 9mm*, mostly down to the ammo's properties, so choosing .30SC is mainly about a little extra magazine capacity at the cost of rarer ammo (with attendant issues of ammo and availability pricing). The ammo availability issue may also make it hard to find quality .30SC ammo. Unless you're desperate for a couple extra rounds in a mag, I'm not seeing cause to switch from 9mm, and .30SC just doesn't have the marked superiority it would need to fight against 9mm's inertia as an established standard. Also, I will never get tired of watching Mr. Harrell pull all manner of things out of those pockets. *I'm just assuming this is intended to compete with the 9mm. Even if it isn't, that's clearly where it will end up.

I also agree that knowing your weapon, how to handle it, shot placement, etc., are at least as important as how many rounds one carries. Also, the S&W Shield Plus is not really a small gun when compared to something like the Ruger LCP Max .380. The S&W Shield Plus SC is 19.3 oz w/ 13 rd empty mag. The Ruger LCP Max .380 is just 10.8 oz w/ 12 rd empty mag. One thing is certain, .380 and 9mm calibers are not going away. If 30 Super Carry wants to survive, gun makers will have to produce true micro-carry platforms in this caliber. So far, the only SC pistols are from S&W and Nighthawk - and they are not micro-carry size.

There are some countries that limit what a citizen can own by caliber. Many places are restricted to .32 cal max for personal protection. .22lr, .25acp, or .32acp are the only options. Suddenly, the .30SC looks like a magnum. If they could get something that's compliant to local regs, that even comes CLOSE to 9mm power, that's a vast improvement. Just my thoughts. I'm qualified to carry with a .32 H&R mag, .40S&W, .357mag, and a .44 spl. The 357 is a truck gun so it's on my permit. The other 3 I rotate for personal carry. I completely disagree. I think the most popular firearms in the nation right now are concealed carry firearms. And the consumers of those firearms are constantly asking engineering to provide more magazine capacity, more concealability, and more power than 380. This is exactly what main stream firearm consumers have asked for. And something that is close to 9mm performance while adding 3 extra cartidges to a magazine is nothing to poo on. Really compact single stack 9's may onlt hold 6 or 7 rounds, taking that to 9 or 10 is significant. This is a solution to the problem that engineering cannot cram any more 9mm into a smaller package. And some of us are excited about the innovation.

The range down here to take them is almost always short too, why the energy is not needed. I laughed at a dude carrying a Mini 14, it was one shot for him, so then I laughed at myself 😂 We were running dogs, he wasn't, we were sporting shotguns and two on the line had 30 - 30, one bolt, one lever. Okay, I had thought about dialing it down, and tried, not for hunting just punching paper, trying a "target load". You just brought it to mind. _Didn't pursue it because the Garand became basically a bolt action too often._ lol often enough that I was just racking the bolt and dropping live rounds sometimes 😂 Point and laugh at me. Hey, what other calibers do you shoot? Just curious. Don't have to answer. ☺

I really liked 357SIG when it came out; I was certain the Highway Patrol in many states would jump on it. It seems to be on the way out. The problem with 30 Super Carry is that it needs to compete with 9mm: it's not quite as effective and has the same recoil but it's new so it's more expensive. How many are willing to give up their 9mm and any ammo stockpile for this?
@BallisticGrandpa2 жыл бұрын
9mm? I'm still using .45 acp 😁. Reality is, I carry 9mm when I need to conceal a handgun and .45 acp when concealment isn't a concern. If I need more than that, I should have brought the rifle anyway. I still think .30 Super Carry would be an interesting round for a lever-action carbine though.

Yep, already have a crap ton of 9mm ammo and just like .357 Sig, this .30SC will be overpriced and harder to find.
@beargillium23692 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest drawback to 357sig is similar to the drawback of this stuff, specialized chamber and specialized ammo made for a purpose nobody really asked for. That said, necked pistol ammo has always looked cool if nothing else!

@@beargillium2369 I gave my Springfield XD in 357 SIG to my brother who was experimenting with pistol shooting at 100 yards. The bullet drop on standard pistol calibers at that range can be significant.

Thanks Paul for your invaluable time and insight. I didn’t even know that the 30 Supercarry existed until now. Also I want to thank you for your service to our country, not just in the military, but the training you provided in the past and for your current training for us. You are a great American! And it seems people have treated you wrongly for I don’t believe that you speak like William Shatner nor are your explanations boring or tedious. Actually many of us that are not gun savvy depend on your explanations to learn. So keep up the great training and the way you train!😊

Have to agree. Given how widely available 9x19 is, 30 SC looks like a solution in search of a problem.

I have a book on pistol shoot in the early 1900's, the winner of the pine board penetration test was .30 luger, this seems to be version 2 of that.

@@johngraesser4911 Good point, I'd not considered that. It'd be interesting to see 30SC tested for penetration against 9x19, 40 S&W, 45 ACP etc.

So, Federal more or less stated that .30 SC was intended to target new shooters, not existing shooters. That said, for me as somebody who owns .32 caliber revolvers in the same bullet diameters, it's interesting to me. .30 SC seems to be essentially a hot .32 H&R Magnum, but achieves the numbers from slightly shorter barrels and has more rounds. I believe the round has potential and as @john graesser said, it's essentially .30 Luger 2.0 in terms of performance. Just not a bottleneck cartridge. I do appreciate the extra 2 rounds over 9mm guns in the same size.

In the USA I generally agree, but in Mexico where 9x19 is illegal for civilian use 30sc might be a better option then 9x20. Probably not but if it gains some popularity in the USA it might end up being more affordable and have more options in Mexico due to economy of scale.

I honestly think .30SC is going to be the next .327 or .224 Valkyrie, especially being released during a time with limited availability of even common rounds like 9x19.

9mm has developed such a broad variety of ammunition that it will be hard to displace as a favorite. And reloads are the key to having enough rds. But we do carry a 22 cal LCP on occasion as it is light, with no spare mag.

I feel that with regards to longevity, the creativity and ability to market .30 super carry by the firearms manufacturers, will be the defining factor, as with many things.
