I carry a revolver with me every day. I lost most of the use of my primary (left) hand in a factory accident. I have trained myself to shoot with my off (right) hand, and I can shoot pretty well. One thing I can’t do is rack the slide on an auto loader. I know they carry more rounds. I know they can be a thinner profile. I know. However, if I can’t clear a jam, or ready it after reloading, it is a paperweight. My revolver is reliable. It shoots where I want it to, and I can reload it with little difficulty. Plus, I just really like revolvers. All of the comparisons in the world are great, but sometimes physical challenges make all of the difference.

As with most things what gun you carry should be decided by what works for you. I don't know why some people are so concerned with what another man chooses to carry. Some people give me shit about carrying a Springfield xde in 9mm but I love that little pistol and it works for me.

I'm a little old lady with small hands, used to have a Glock 19 that beat my thumb joint black and blue every week at the range. I couldn't find a auto-loader that was small enough with enough punch to suit me. Gun #2 was a Ruger .38 special which I learned to hate over the years. Gun #3 is a Taurus Judge Ultra Lite, fits my hand well because of the grip (house gun, not suitable for edc, I'm too short. Just bought gun #4, a Ruger sp101.357 TALO, small and powerful and a blast to shoot, sold the .38 special to help pay the outrageous price tag. And a wheel gun is so much easier to clean. I'm happy

I'd say it mostly depends on what you shoot and how frequently you shoot something. And more importantly if you use a particular load consistently. For example... I use a lot of .410 and .45 Colt as I have both a Taurus Raging Judge Magnum and Rossi Circuit Judge. You very quickly see the differences between Handgun loads in .410 offered from Federal compared to other Handgun loads from people like Remington, Winchester, and etc. Also with slugs, you see that Remington slugs like to pull to the left, Winchesters like to shoot a bit more to point of aim. Even with the buckshot loads, these things are quite noticeable. I also have a Springfield XDS-45 with a 4 inch barrel. It shoots about 4 inches low when using 230gr ammo. I've tried +P as well as various brands to see if there was a real difference in accuracy. It still shoots 4 inches low. However... I know this, so I compensate and aim high. THEN you start to see how certain brands like to either pull the left, right, or string high. Now, 185gr bullets by contrast drop only about 2 1/2 inches. This is at 7 yards mind you. So, sometimes yes... as Paul said some guns are going to have a more noticeable shift when changing ammo.

Hawkticus' History Corner you can’t get a much simpler manual of arms. I started shooting with revolvers and I was taught pretty well from the start how to manage the trigger pull. I think if you can be proficient at a DA revolver, you’ve pretty much got a leg up on any trigger.

Revolver pluses: You can SEE it's loaded from across the room Never needs chambering or unchambering brings up a fresh round with each trigger pull No failure drill to learn and practice Can be carried in a pocket and fired from inside the pocket Can be used as a striking weapon and jammed into hard contact before firing, adding the expanding cartridges gasses to wound creation. No external safety Can be left loaded "forever" without worry about magazines Holds enough shots for any true, private citizen self defense situation Can fire any bullet profile no problem Cases do not kick out on the ground Can be reloaded pretty quick with a speed loader Insensitive to how it's held, doesn't need a strong grip to ensure cycling

What I love most about these videos is that Paul is informative WITHOUT being condescending. A lot of us are coming to the shooting world later in life, didn't grow up hunting, shooting with Uncle Joe and Pop, or running through boot camp. You arrogant jerks whose training method derives from Parris Island DI washouts are useless -- you may be "right," but if you shut down your students' will to learn, what have they gained? As he points out, there are a lot of folks out there who need armed defensive skills but who, for whatever reason, have what they have -- belittling their options doesn't help them one damn bit. Paul is clear, concise, thoughtful in his methodology, and draws one into the lesson. 10 out of 10 even talking on topics I don't care about. Rock on, sir -- you are a blessing in the instructional shooting world.

I was paid to carry a firearm for many years and started that journey when wheel-guns had about 90% +/- of the professional market. I ended the journey after being issued auto loaders for a lengthy period. Present day a wheel-gun is what you will find on my person. Why? I'm not running toward the fight anymore and statistically speaking the amount of rounds expended in a civilian encounter is not that many. More importantly I shoot wheel-guns really well and the manual of arms is second nature and smooth for me. I keep the old bones in motion by averaging about 100 rounds a week and that varies between rim fire and center fire shooting speed drills on bowling pins or steel. When it's nasty outside the dry-fire and timer drills commence in doors. More importantly I know what I will do in a hostile situation from experience and have no worries. Yes, I do have a warm spot for 1911's and do not shun auto-loaders as the alternative for others.

With a hangfire this would mean it goes of while the chamber is off the barrel and is going to damage the gun and render it unable to work. When you rack out the hangfiring round of a selfloading pistol, it is out of the gun and the gun stays operable. (But i have to admit, i never had such a hangfire ever. There's something so nice and mechanical about a double action revolver. My dad used to call them 'the thinking man's gun'. Now I do think auto loaders are slick as snail slime, and have several, but maybe it's just the nestalgia of a revolver with fixed sites that takes me back..

Greetings Paul ... You're right, and I have to say that I'm one of those people who wouldn't trust himself with an auto-loader. And some of the reasons for this (at least for me) are: 1. A double action revolver is simply a simpler machine to fire. And if I end up in panic mode I definitely need simple (something very intuitive that I can just point and shoot, no racking, no safeties, nor any other doodad to mess with). 2. I like a magazine that I can't loose (especially if I degrade into panic mode). 3. I like a magazine that is very simple and easy for me to reload (even with one hand ... and even if that hand is maybe hurt), and where I don't have to put the gun down. 4. I've discovered that I can make an auto-loader misfire just be limp wristing it. That this can happen scares the snuffin out of me. So In a real life panic mode that would make it unreliable for me. And now just a comment about a revolver's double action mode (and I only mention it because it's something I rather like). And of course I know that you know this ... but I'm going to take the time to explain just for clarity. A revolver has something called a "pawl", which causes the cylinder to rotate as the trigger is pulled. And there's another little doodad located just above the trigger and below the cylinder called the "cylinder latch". As the trigger is pulled and the pawl rotates the cylinder, the cylinder latch slides on the rotating cylinder until it falls into a "cylinder groove" (these are visible on the cylinder itself). If the trigger is slowly pulled, the time comes when the cylinder latch falls into a cylinder groove. The interesting thing about this is that when the latch falls into that groove, you know it (and when that happens it can be both felt and heard). I find that I rarely utilize the single action operation because once the double action reaches this point (where the latch falls into a cylinder groove), one can then take careful aim and then slowly squeeze the trigger from there ... and from there it's a very short easily controlled pull. And actually I think the trigger squeeze from that position might actually give better control of the shot than when firing single action (because the single action is just too light of a pull). For me it just feels more controlled and the hammer fall seems more predictable (less likely to be a surprise when it happens) than it does even in the single action mode. This works very well with a Ruger GP100. I've never tried it with a Security Six, but I suspect that it would work fine with a Security Six too. Anyway, I would be interested to see you do a video where you compare shot accuracy using this technique as compared to single action. I'd be interested to see what you'd think after actually trying it both ways, side by side (so to speak). Thanks for the great videos!

@Robert Underdunk Terwilliger: “Totally archaic;” I doubt it. Not all sworn officers normally wear a uniform at work or are the first on the scene of a 911 call. Many LEO - especially senior officers - are investigators, administrators, technical experts, and so forth. They may find a J Frame, an SP101, or an LCR meets their requirements very well . . . just as the patrol officer’s “duty needs” may be better met with a service-sized semiautomatic. And when that patrol officer is attending his daughter’s school basketball game, having dinner at his in-laws home, or watching a movie with his wife, he too may prefer a revolver to an autoloader (even a small 9x19mm such as a P365 or a G43). Agency policies differ, but many departments permit individual officers carry personally owned sidearms when off-duty.

I like revolvers. I've had an sp101 for over 19 years. It's been loaded nearly the whole time with no spring fatigue. I've fired thousands of rounds through it, much of it .357mag. Very minimal care has been required to keep it functional. In the mid 2000's I severed 4 tendons in my wrist, 3 of which controlled my thumb, 1 controlled positioning of my hand. A double action revolver was the first handgun that I was able to use. Similarly, my wife shattered both her wrists in a car accident. A double action revolver, my sp101, was also the first handgun she could use. See the pattern? Just because you're good now means nothing for the future. Poop WILL happen to you physically. A double action revolver is a lowest common denominator handgun. Simply put, a double action revolver makes the least demands from its operator. It can't be induced to malfunction by limp wristing it. It's dead simple to load and unload. Its takes only a glance to check loaded status. There's no spring loaded slide to cycle. It can sit for decades loaded without spring fatigue. It's completely self contained - all is important parts are firmly attached. There's not a button on a revolver that causes a vital piece of the gun (the magazine) to simply fall off, nor is there an essential need for accessories like spare magazines to guard against loss. Every round fired in an automatic pistol depends on the perfect function of all previously fired rounds. No such dependency exists for revolvers. Honestly this last bit is not really an issue with modern guns and ammo. However, a revolver can still function reliably using cartridges loaded with match heads when SHTF. I'm in no way advocating for replacing your auto pistol with a revolver, but you owe it to yourself and your family to have a revolver in your safe just in case.

I'd like to suggest a few more advantages of the revolver, at least in my use: 1) the weapon is mechanically at rest when in condition 1, no mag springs, striker spring or hammer springs to leave compressed. This may not come into play over the course of a few years, but my bedside gun and carry gun have been loaded since I was 21 and will continue to loaded for the foreseeable future. Over the span of decades, i suspect revolvers may have a reliability advantage. I realize you can change springs ect. but can I ask, Have you done it? 2) It is possible to carry a major caliber in a compact package. This has a debatable value in personal protection against humans, but it provides more flexibility in wilderness carry. I'd rather shoot a black bear with short .357 than a 9mm of similar size. In my use, animals are more of a potential issue than people. 3) most compact revolvers don't have many straight lines, and as a result they appear more organic under a garment and seem easier for the mind to dismiss. I subjectively feel that I have to be much more modest with how I move carrying my wife's xds, than i do carrying my j frame. Again this is an advantage in my use, in my carry style with my body type but i think it's an advantage most people can enjoy. 4) finally in the unlikely event that I need my gun for personal defense, I think there is a advantage to a snub-nose revolver with walnut grips over a all black auto-loader in the eyes of a jury. This advantage may be imagined but, I can see a prosecutor making the argument that a guy with a glock 19 and two extra mags in a shopping mall was looking for a fight. It seems difficult to make the same claims about free range lummox with a 5 shot revolver.
@asdffdsa7657
@asdffdsa7657 4 жыл бұрын
Gregory Buscher that last point is the reason I carry a 380 pocket pistol around town instead of a double stack 9. Even with an extra mag it just looks “cute.” Where I live nothing but moose can’t be taken with a 9mm Para, but if you’re worried about moose, you’re better off jumping up to 44 mag. 357 won’t always cut it. In this case the revolver is still the clear choice. So, yeah, there are a lot of reasons to carry a revolver as opposed to an auto loader. I think a lot of the time people forget other people aren’t always the aggressor in self-defense situations, and for those who live amongst big game, revolvers tend to be much better than your common auto.

You could go with 10mm. While I do prefer a 357 for regular carry, I have a 10mm for when I need wilderness defense. Very effective and as powerful if not more than the 357. I think number 4 is a good point there. It is always hard to predict cause you could always get a jury that thinks anything..... but I would generally think it does look better to a jury when you have a revolver. Even if you were walking around with a crazy overpowered revolver, there is something in the minds of people who don't really do guns that revolvers are a bit more "antiquated and cute" but scary black autoloader = you were up to no good.
@johnstockton8138
@johnstockton8138 3 жыл бұрын
@VideoGame Player Honestly I would not risk my life with a 10 mm or a 357 mag against any bear. It sounds attractive right? concealable easy to carry, but the truth is a lot of these 10mm guys especially overrate the 10 mm as bear defense. The minimum is a 12 gauge shotgun with hot slugs, especially if you are not a good shooter. With a handgun you need good shot placement at distances further out. With shotgun 2-3 slugs close range, which all adequate skill level shooters can manage. If you fail to hit a vital organ or central nervous system out at a distance with the 10mm or a 357 mag the bear will kill you before it bleeds out. The 12 gauge with hot slugs at close range is enough to drop the bear without the extreme amount of shot placement needed for a pistol.
@ALavaPenguin
@ALavaPenguin 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnstockton8138 I think you are missing the point of this comment to some degree. This is about double action revolvers vs auto loaders. He is talking about hand guns when you are deciding between handguns. Not whether to take a rifle/shotgun vs a handgun.. Unless you have no other choice, if you are in bear territory the handgun is the backup weapon [sometimes you have no choice!!!]. In no way by this discussion are you precluded from carrying a rifle or a shotgun along with a handgun. Obviously you should if you can. However, even with a rifle or a shotgun there are advantages to having a handgun along with it, and then comes into the territory of, in the case of bear, what is the best handgun for bear defense. Not to mention, say you got yourself your high powered handgun, and your shotgun/rifle..... Unless you are literally ONLY walking out it the wilderness [most are not, you may be making camp, or many other things] you will not always have that rifle/shotgun in your ready to draw state at all times. While, a hand gun you can still have on you at times you have to set the rifle down. Obviously a big ol' shotgun or rifle will be better, but you are missing the entire point of a "wildlife defense handgun." Same with CCW, of ourse it would be more effective if I ran around carrying a big ol' rifle on me everywhere I went. Doesn't mean it is always practical or reasonable to go grocery shopping with a shotgun and a rifle on my back.. Also, until you get to shotgun or maybe just rifle levels, all that matters is just drilling holes in them and good shot placement to hit as many vital organs, or the core ones, as possible. This is an advantage of 10mm often has is with the proper loads it does have enough power to drill through a big bear, and can shoot a lot of shots easily, while your 44 mag is still just drilling nearly the same holes, but you are doing far less shots and prob not aiming near as well. Maybe the real big revolvers like the 500 sw can do a bit more, but that gun has serious disadvantages as a serious self defense weapon vs bears that often makes the lighter guns more useful.

Thank you Paul, as always, I enjoy the videos. My introduction to handguns was my grandfather teaching me by shooting .38sp in a SINGLE action Ruger Blackhawk in .357mag. Once mastered there, then move up to the double action. He never owned an autoloader so I never had a chance to fire one until years later. I shoot revolvers because they hold a special place in my heart and because you can do some pretty impressive things hand-loading straight wall cases like .357, .41 and .44. However, my carry and go to in society is an autoloader. A walk in the woods, a revolver.
