@@TheAtZShow did you even watch this dumpster fire of a movie? It is repeatedly said that she is not allowed to try on the dang clothes. The first scene to indicate that was her telling the dude she would try on the clothes if he hadn't tattled on her the last time. He promises not to so she tries on the shoes. Like literally it is said throughout the entire film that it's unprofessional and forbidden and that her boss would freak out. The texted taunts her into doing it as well and asks if it makes her afraid wearing the forbidden clothes. Even the police scene they ask why she left out information like wearing her clothes and sleeping over there. She said it was out of embarrassment. These aren't even the only times. The entire time she's with the clothes there are constant reminders either from her or other characters that she's not supposed to try on clothes. She is literally JUST her shopper. She goes to look at clothes and purchases them on her behalf. I swear you didn't watch the movie and just half assed this by watching people talk about the film.

She does not imagine the ghosts.. Close to the end, a glass breaks and the partner of her late brother hears it and runs down the stairs to ask what happened !!! At the end, her brother has a glass floating and expresses that he is not at peace because she cannot let go of her guilt and grief. She then realises that she has to let go to free him from the "spirit world".

Yeah I have no idea what happened in this movie. The director seems to say it was all in her head, so, there's that. The scene with the hotel/Ingo was so weird and us not seeing what happened when the person came in was so weird. I was also one who thought she died or got killed in the hotel room...until she started interacting with people again. What I felt is that there was some irony...the one time, perhaps the one REAL time that the brother ACTUALLY was giving her the sign (dropping the glass, the time when the audience sees him)...she totally missed it. That's how I interpreted it. I felt like the new boyfriend being all mysterious was somewhat setting the scene for the "real" sign coming, maybe Lewis was talking through him somehow, and then he dropped the glass...but it totally went over her head. So, it's like, the whole movie she was misreading signs and searching for them and/or apparently creating them in her mind when they weren't really there (according to what the director said)...but the one real time it happened, she missed it. Who knows though!

I thought perhaps the ghost leaving the hotel was the spirit of Krya the murdered model, and the hotel room was where she and Ingo hooked up. Ingo was trying to pin the murder on Maureen. Maureen got wise when she saw the jewelry and told the police. Remember the texter was really concerned about her telling the cops about the texts. Plus her friend in the cafe asks if she's going to testify. Remember the new boyfriend in backyard said Nick believed ALL spirits of the newly dead hangout on the Earth plane for a bit. Hence Krya the model at hotel plus following her murderer. I still don't get the ending..I don't understand where is her boyfriend?...is he dead? Says don't worry the road is safe, just not busy. So it's all in her head according to director...ugh! That sucks

Personal Shopper - The title is more than just Maureen's job, it's her motif - she is shopping for meaning in her life, shopping for an identity. She was once a twin but her brother dies and now is no longer. She plays out a fantasy that a ghost is stalking her, to give her something of her past-self to hold onto. She even pretends to be someone else when she tries on her bosses clothes. Her delusions intensity when her boss is murdered - believing it could be the ghost when it's clear it was the ex boyfriend. Her job was the last piece of her old self. With her boss dead, she now has nothing of her past-self left and is free to build a new future, a new identity, for herself. She can only do this if she lets go of the ghosts, her brother, the last thing of the past she is holding onto. That's what she finally does in the end when she says 'or is it all just me.'

Super natural. Subtle. Nice pacing. Good movie. What a stupid man to screw up his own movie by throwing in "twists". Even K.S. is trying to get him to STFU. @@sly9269 It's weird that I got so focused on this movie! It shows that it really did have the effect of being a good mystery/ghost story. Watched. Rewound. Filled in blanks. The clues are all there, that she was murdered in the hotel room by her employer's psycho boyfriend. She is surrounded by people who "believe" and they talk to ghosts. She does communicate with spirits. All of her conversations post murder are with people who want to convey a message. One entity she seeks, her twin, sees her, but she does not see him. Yet. She needs to finish her journey. The final trip she takes, that one has the symbolic quality of transformation. Travel to a new plane of existence (upward motion). She has left her home. She is in a foreign land. Her man will meet her......but he is not there because he is not dead. I would watch this again for fun, but I have the interpretation that satisfies me. IF it's not what the director meant, oh well. I like mine better.

This made me see this movie in a whole new light. I'd assumed she was murdered in the hotel by the guy who'd murdered her model employer and she'd left as a ghost. Everything that happened after that was her in the afterlife that looked just like real life and the end scene "is it just me?" was her realising she's trapped herself in some wort of weird purgatory. I based all that on the hotel doors repeatedly opening to nothing (her ghost leaving) not that it was suppose to be her feeling invisible to the world. That whole hotel scene with the stolen jewelry was really confusing. I'll have to watch it again. Made me see Kristen Stewart in a new light. She's good a depressed nerdy characters.

Maybe. The problem is you have to ignore a few things. For example, the point of the scene when glass drops is that she fails to recognize it as paranormal or as the sign from her brother she's been asking for. Also, the conversation with the new boyfriend is deeply strange - he moves right into personal and philosophical questioning about spiritual beliefs, after which he fairly abruptly leaves. It's not a reach to think he's a medium and that she is dead. (The problem with that is that she seemingly interacts with the driver... but does she really?) I'm not sure I buy what I just said - nor am I sure if the ambiguity is a strength of the film or a peculiar weakness. (For example, the ambiguity of Henry James's Turn of the Screw, which has a similar is it real or is it in her head theme, is great because either explanation is full and rewarding. Here it seems so far that any particular explanation requires ignoring certain elements. I probably need to see it again to make up my mind. But one thing - and this will seem very odd to say - but the director's opinion doesn't actually settle the matter. Artists often create something with an intention in mind but once its complete, the meaning has a life of its own. You could just as easily argue that the director doesn't want to believe in an afterlife but subverts his own intentions by presenting a convincing version on one. (Again, not saying this is necessarily what I think - just arguing to show that it is possible.) Bottom line: Stewart was very good and the film is interesting. Worth talking about

You make several great points. As to the director's interpretation, I place very little stock in it -- which, of course, seems odd because the guy made the movie so shouldn't he know? The answer is, maybe not. Talk to anyone who writes fiction and they'll tell you the direction a work takes is almost never exactly what they set out to create, and often it's significantly different. Organically the work and its characters move in directions the creator couldn't anticipate and in a sense must simply allow to happen. In the same regard, the resulting interpretations of one's work are rarely in perfect alignment with the creator's intentions. Personally, I rather prefer it that way. In addition, directors often play games in interviews. Here on KZbin you can find an interview with Ridley Scott about Blade Runner discussing whether the final scene suggests that Deckard is a replicant. Almost playfully, with a Cheshire grin across his face, Scott says "It means he's a replicant." Yeah but.. does it? If Blade Runner 2049 is to be considered canon, it would certainly seem not. Now, perhaps at that time, when Scott was interviewed, the Blade Runner sequel concept didn't exist and these considerations for Deckard hadn't been thought through (who knows) but my sense of how Scott replied is he was having some fun with the interview, and even if he wasn't, there's ample room for differing interpretations based on what's provided in the original movie. Point being -- I don't think a director's word on the issue should be considered final. Arguably, it's just one possible interpretation among many, and my feeling is that's exactly as it should be.

I really loved this movie. It's depiction of what spirits would look like when manifesting themselves on film. To me, is the best portrayal of ghosts I've ever seen in a movie (a real hair on the back of your neck raiser). I feel that the writer wants to lead the audience into thinking at the end of the movie it's Maureen's because she is really grieving the loss of a brother and she's not as objective because she's to close to Lewis. However the movie does suggest that spirits could actually really exist. The scene when Maureen is talking to Laura's new partner and he says he feels Lewis is there with them. Then we see Lewis appear behind Maureen without her knowledge of the ghosts existence says that Lewis's ghosts does exist. It also implies that Lewis was trying to contact Maureen but her ability as a medium is not very good as Maureen admits/implies this to Ingo in there conversation at Kyra's apartment. One thing for sure the movie really sparks conversations with multiple possibilities that can be inferred depending on what the viewer believes and interprets. The only one who really knows is the writer of the story. Reading all the interesting viewpoints and seeing KZbin clips has been fun. I've had to watch this movie multiple times because of it's ending. It's definitely one of my favorite movies because it's outside of the box and makes you think which is refreshing. So many movies are just the same formula of the base plot we've seen to many times. Boy or girl meet on false pretenses, then get exposed, there's some blow up as a result. then they get back together in the end because they just can't live without each other. Personal Shopper was NOT formula and I love it's originality even if the viewer is left thinking "What??? It's just me??? I need to watch this this movie again.

I know what the director said, about a woman's journey through grief, but a true artist leaves his work up for interpretation. Personally, I think Maureen died when she brought the Cartier jewelry to the hotel. It makes no sense to keep a possible witness alive ,and then showcase an invisible person riding an elevator and leaving the hotel. Lara, herself, as well as her boyfriend, Erwin, are both mediums; their ability is part of the reason why they bonded. Throughout the film, it's pretty clear that Lara believes in the supernatural; she believed Victor Hugo's story and that there was possibly a presence haunting Lewis's house. Of course, I could be totally wrong. But this is simply my theory.

Hearing that explanation just makes me dislike the movie even more. What angle are you going for? Decide and pick. It’s a horror story with banshee ghosts, then it’s a murder mystery, then it’s a 6th sense type of vibe, then despite all the evidence that it’s NOT all in her head, it’s apparently all I’m her head? The movie reminds me of those group projects you do in school: each person writes the beginning, middle, and end. They rush and mash the parts together not caring about how they link. This seems to be the common theory, but if it is correct then the movie makers did a crap job. We should not be seeing things that she does not if its just her imagination. The theory seems to come from the single knock to the last question she asks, but (just like the texts) the knocks contradict themselves and aren't to be trusted as they first give a single knock when she asked if it was her brother. Here's another theory, the "ghost" that drops the glass is an actual person and not her brother, seeing her sitting there, then disappearing (as we see him disappear from our point of view) and Kristen Stewart is a ghost since leaving the hotel room. The fella that she has a conversation with at the table is a medium telling her to move on, not really the new boyfriend. There are holes I. This theory I am sure, but it is fun to think about.

In other words, the reader is NEVER obligated to believe the writer (same with audience not being obligated to believe the director). But in order to recollect an event, you have to know it has happened. She doesn't seem to know what happened. She looks totally oblivious. Even after the glass broke, she didn't seem to suspect it was her brother's doing. Maureen has also reported all the ghost sightings to her friend (Lucas' fiance) so far but when the friend came running to the kitchen and asked her what happened, she just casually motions toward the sink as if to say the glass fell from the edge of the sink. So her recollection of the event is quite different from what played out on the screen for the viewer.

The actual meaning of the movie: when movies betray too much paranormal reality a cop-out ending is added. In PS she thinks it’s all in her head. “Jacob’s Ladder” & the recent “Hereditary” also had to have rigged endings. Like all the old seance movies thumping sounds from overhead like in PS matches non-imaginary reality. Alternating with a loud scrapping sound like dragging a salt shaker over a kitchen counter. Gotta add some salt right? To ground the situation.

I had already thought that the ghosts weren't real, but i also am kind of disappointed and also disagree, yet agree because what about when Kira's boyfriend left the same hotel as the one the messages told Kristen to go to, so why did they add that in if he hadn't done anything to the twin and there was a scene just before that of a sound in the twins room as if someone came in, but that could just be her mind. There was one other thing, you said the cross scratch marks were either not there or an animal of some sort had done it, but there was one on the stairs where an animal couldn't reach and her friend had seen it too. Even if there is an explanation for my queries, i feel unsatisfied.

She has a heart attack in the hotel just like her brother, she leaves the hotel as a Ghost. She speaks with Lewis' ex who is a medium, she talks to Lewis' ex's new boyfriend who isnt super intune as a medium but can know for sure Lewis is there, he tells her how spirits (just like her own) wander the earth a few days after death but need to move on. She interacts with them then goes on to another country I forget which country it is but someone already posts about how most people there believe in spirits and talk to them like normal people. Then she sees that ghost stuff happening and communicating in the way she watched in the KZbin video. This is the way she taught herself to communicate. Shes dead.

Ok wait a second, so you are telling me that the scene when the doors are opening in the hotel, is her that feels invisible to the world? What? I'm not getting it though, if Kyra's boyfriend (indigo? something like it) was there too, why didn't he kill her? This was his intention right? Or are you telling me that she left just in time for him to not find her? I just saw the movie and I thought she was dead in the end, like we don't see her boyfriend ok? So I thought that maybe she was simply going around, and she was seeing stuff, even if people are talking to her maybe it doesn't mean anything... but yeah ok so if it was all in her mind, and I'm ok with that, then when she says "Or it is just me?" she doesn't mean "Am i talking to myself, my dead self." but "Am i hearing and seeing stuff because I need something to hold on to?" right? I have to say I hate movies with open endings that I don't get, I mean I like them, but I also hate them... is frustrating because I thought I had figured it out... but apparently I haven't. But I am also glad because Kristen wasn't that bad, and yes I was one of the "You did that movie so i hate you" and I'm sorry for it. She isn't that bad.

I felt she was seeing spirits, thats part of what she does, her and her brother had it. The question was in beyond this plain of existence. She speaks with spirits or ghosts still within this "side" (glass falling is real as two people witness the broken glass). The siblings wanted a confirmation based on ego, of WE will decide or not decide what lies or ends beyond. We, along with her, still don't know. Is it just death? Is it a line that just can't be crossed back over? Ultimately, she knows its just her now, any conversation with her brother is and has been over once he died. She like tons of others see things as signs, are they? Maybe, but we take them on faith.

I'm going with the theory that Kristen is suffering from PTSD and most of what happens is her imagination or things she did in periods of being blacked out. As far as the doors and elevators opening and no one being visible, it can't be her spirit because after that point she traveled to meet the boyfriend and people were interacting with her all the way to her room.

Can i be honest, this gonna come off a bit lame , but i honestly think her brother forgot about showing her the sign. I think he was more preoccupied by his girlfriend. Maybe he harboured some resentment bc she moved on so quickly. Like the new bf said, he feels his presence there and something is stopping him being with her. And when we see Maureen visit. A much longer stay than the first time, he realizes he forgot about her and the pact. Also i think this movie could be both. A literal ghost story and a metaphor for her grief. I think some instances could've been ghost and other more a projection of her emotions. Why the hell not 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've only just watched this, and here's what I thought: the ghost was real...how else could you explain the glass actually being on the floor, the sister hearing AND seeing the glass, and the fact that it need sweeping up. The text messages were NOT real. The hotel room was booked in her name, using the cash that we see her clearly being paid in throughout the film. She imagines the text messages, and simultaneously the boyfriend is murdering Kyra, leading Maureen to confuse the two and believe she's receiving messages from the killer. This explains why she is able to leave the hotel alive - the boyfriend never actually goes to the same room as her, it's simply a coincidence that he's in the same hotel. The end is as explained: she travels to visit her boyfriend, where the journey, distance and quiet has finally given her some perspective to realise that she cannot hold onto her brother anymore and must let go.

Interesting. I never thought about the fact that the text messages could have been fake/in her mind. So, the murder was real (Ingo killed Kyra)...but he was never actually texting Maureen? Hmm. That could be. Because the hotel room scene was just so bizarre...zero resolution as to what actually went on in there. I, too, tend to think Lewis dropping the glass was real. And the irony is, the whole movie she's searching for his sign...and when he finally does it, she totally misses it.

Some conflicting points: 1 Maureen doesn't acknowledge that Lewis appears behind her. She thinks the glass fell by itself. It can't be from Maureen's point-of-view. This proves that Ghosts do exist in the movie universe and indicates Maureen isn't an unreliable narrator (unless only ghosts that Maureen sees are imagined: lewis and the female ghost manifest very differently). 2 Maureen see's two crosses, and one of them is too high for her or an animal to make. 3 The solution in the video requires the viewer to accept that nothing of substance happened in the hotel room. Igno and Maureen either met up, made some agreement and left, or didn't meet up at all. Why would Igno meet up if he had nothing worth saying? He doesn't leave w/ the jewellery, so he probably doesn't want it. Possible answers to these points: 1 Ghosts are emotional manifestations and Lewis appears because his friend is uncomfortable about dating his fiancee. Alternatively, Assaya bent the ghost rules for this one encounter to have his grief-cake and eat it too. I guess you could also argue that the fact that Maureen doesn't notice this one encounter is proof that it actually happened - it isn;t connected to the unreliable narrator. 2 In answer to the crosses you could say the first was created prior to Maureen entering the house, and that the second cross doesn't exist (no one else saw it). I think it's a stretch to say Maureen or an animal left the markings. However, this concedes that Maureen is an unreliable narrator. If Maureen is an unreliable narrator, there's a chance she killed Kyra for Igno. 3 Don't really have a counter-point for this one. I think, if one accepts nothing happened in the hotel room, this also serves as evidence that Maureen is more involved with Igno than the film leads us to believe. Maybe they meet at the hotel room the first time Maureen goes there? This film was great, but I think every interpretation of the ending requires some serious mental gymnastic and deliberate ignorance of counter-evidence. I think this supports the themes of the movie (grief, self-identification and supernatural doubt), but it makes for a very frustrating ending.
@clumsysandbocks5650

The Killer: Igno, the female ghost or Maureen. Probably Igno. The Texter: Igno (except for the encounter on the landing). Best evidence for this is that Igno checks his phone when he leaves the elevator. What happens in the hotel: ? What does the final line mean: either (a) Maureen is dead, or (b) Maureen has overcome her grief, or (c) all of the above.
