He didn't we this song, but puts it right in the middle of all his shows to open everyone's heart...Tim Flynn, who did the original vesrion that influenced this, didn't write t either, but it's a too-little-known classic...I imagine uilleann pipes and ney/duduk playing the guitar lines...

@@Beshara1111 Richard Tmopson did write this song. He wrote the melody as part of the soundtrack for an Australian film. The film didn’t do well but Tim Finn heard the music and wrote the words to suit part of it. Richard got wind of it and they collaborated on a live performance for Jools Holland on TV. Their combination has proven a well loved success

Thanks. I came to Richard via Teddy, who has to be one of the most underrated singer-songwriters around. Great songwriter and his voice is spectacular. Also, really good, fun performer. The NY TImes did a piece on him a few years back and I thought it was sign he on his way but he's still slow burn. Maybe he's for discerning tastes only.

To have a gift, as Richard surely does, must be deeply satisfying: to then share it with others as he does whenever he plays, even more so. Then to know you have passed that same gift on, to see and hear it in your own son, and finally, to be side by side with him, sharing that gift...can there be a greater reward???

I enjoy Teddy's voice more each time I hear it! I very recently "found" this song -- I hadn't realized he sung on it too (and I don't know Richard's music at all.) Somehow I listened to it -- it was auto-generated by KZbin for me and playing in the background -- then I recognized Teddy's voice the moment he began to sing verse two. Beautiful. I first learned of Teddy Thompson in the Transatlantic Sessions, where he's playing music with several other musician favorites of mine. I don't think it's just me, I think there's something special about Teddy's voice. I can hear his command over how he releases the air from his lungs as he sings and I love it when he lets it all go, in a perfectly relaxed but controlled way. Some singers sound best when they're relaxed and I bet it was great for him to sing a duet with his dad. Wouldn't surprise me to find recordings of him performing with his mom, too. TT played guitar and sang in Rufus Wainwright's band. An American, also with musician parents; who happened to do better in Europe than here. I bet Teddy and Rufus knew of each other for ages before joining forces.
@speakertreatz Жыл бұрын
@@EchosLens They were childhood friends, Rufus wrote a song about Teddy called Nobody's Off The Hook. The close connections between the three families, the Thompsons Wainwrights and McGarrigles are very interesting, especially when it's the 'children' telling the stories. No matter which one of them is telling the story the thread is always that the 'elders' are far more childish and immature and neurotic than their kids and are really competitive with them. Rufus explains how he never heard Joni Mitchell growing up and only discovered her as an adult because 'Mom wouldn't allow Joni's music to be played in the house because she was jealous of her and bitter about her success'. Teddy recounts Richard being difficult to work with even though all he was asking him to do was play some guitar on his album. I must check out the Transatlantic Sessions, thank you for the tip-off.
@EchosLens Жыл бұрын
@@speakertreatz Interesting -- thank you for filling in the picture some more! I've heard the McGarrigles I think -- I'm not a hundred percent sure, but if I have it would probably be from the Transatlantic Sessions. I'll check out the McGarrigles and see if I can spot the neurotic ones. It cracks me up that it's the parents. I'm sure it wasn't an easy life.

Thanks to Spotify I got to listen to this marvelous song by Jake Field, Sandi Thom, and Duncan Thompson. Richard here is masterful in reviewing life with another, both involved in a "blind romance" and then the struggle that each of them have in having separate visions. We hear from the older voice (Richard Thompson) and not his other half. Recasting the past, a younger voice (Teddy Thompson) brings back the youthful strength and energy that persists, never ending the singer's voice, still "believing it" ... leaving us the mystery of whether "it" was the mutual bond or the voices' hoping for persuasion to resolve their separate visions. In two months, I've listened to this song a hundred times. From the comments below I see that I'm not alone. Sad that there was no video.
