With so many interesting and varied shops where u could buy anything( at very affordable prices) Now a pretensious ,sanitised, globalised wasteland, with many down n outs and antisocials about.

I turned 20 in 1980. Everything used to close at midday Saturday and so Perth had a lovely relaxed slow paced feeling to it from Saturday arvo until Monday morning. Weekends were truly relaxing then. We were happier.

13 in 1980 myself, those were far simpler times. Service station rosters for the weekends where you actually got served at a petrol station, having to use a CBD map book to get around-no smartphones then. Smartphones and the internet is convenient these days young readers, however when you see a 2 year old just looking at Daddy’s phone and nothing else our future is not looking too great!

@@oldtimer2192 A Chinese friend of mine hosted some relatives from Hong Kong for a weeks holiday here. She drove them all around the south-west to see the beautiful countryside. They sat in the back looking at their phones the whole time and would not even look out the window let alone get out and walk around! They should have stayed in their poky apartment back in HK.

I remember the Mitchell freeway being built and I was the first person to drive on it with my go kart when I was 12 :) Before that there was all bush. near Karrinyup rd

Me too I grew up in Lilacdale Rd.And Odin Rd went all the way through where the freeway goes. And all that land was swamp and market gardens. I remember when the section of Karrinyup Rd between Huntriss and Nth Bch Rd was a dirt track, then became Kilarney Rd for a short time.

A time when the AMP tower was the largest building in Perth. You can barely even see it now amongst the giant structures that surround it.

When 'going into town' to see the Christmas lights was fun and you could hear the paper boys on the corner of Forrest Place calling out 'Daily news... paper!' And when there were enough shops open and in business in Hay St mall to actually go shopping in the city. It's all a bit of a wasteland now.
