I love Perturabo because really...he always could've done that. On his adoptive world he's a goddamn PRIMARCH nobody could've actually stopped him from just wandering off to set up the most wonderful toy emporium the galaxy had ever seen.. during the great crusade he could've chosen to use his talents to perfect his legion, his conquered planets or anything else. Every traitor Primarch had a major flaw in their character and that's what usually makes them so interesting.

Perturabo had serious self esteem issues. He constantly craved for attention and praise by everyone around him. There is a canon story about him and an artist of olympia having a contest. They both build statues and the artist one has the better - because his isn't perfect and shows emotion almost like it's alive while perturabo's is perfect but a lifeless statue. Perturabo is unable to accept this and smashes the work if said artist. He is a child. At that point.

As someone with autism I've always sort of identified with Perturabo, he's definitely one of my favourite characters because he is flawed but not in a sci fi or supernatural way but in a human way

While I know this may be controversial, I believe the short story Storm of Iron (which also happens to have canonised him as a Daemon Primarch) actually follows this plot further- in that story, he is far more mature and actually takes the time to teach his sons a lesson on surpassing their flaws to achieve victory. He even does this over a game of regicide and doesn’t mind that his sons fail to grasp the lesson at firsts. So while I do think him going daemonic is a waste, I find the portrayal of his maturity to be really interesting. Granted, I’ve only heard this from Weshammer and not read the story myself, so there’s that to consider.

If I remember correctly, the ritual was done in his own name rather than some dark bargain. His souls is still his own, he owes allegiance to no one. That’s imo the biggest reason why we don’t see him too often, he doesn’t have any big goals that the chaos gods are forcing him to accomplish. But i do hope they retcon what god he pledged himself to, as instead of the 4 traditional ones, he could instead pledge himself to Vashtorr who would offer a convincing logical argument that would make sense for Perturabo, something like teaching him the secrets of making demons into batteries or how to channel his creativity using the powers of the warp as his canvas, something that would benefit Perturabo and Vashtorr in the process. Vashtorr is the perfect god for Perturabo as both are deeply logical and machine and creation oriented (though in a mad sort of way) and after the Siege, Perturabo would not want to return to the Imperium and a deal with Vashtorr would make perfect sense.

Always say ferrus and perturabo would ahve made an interesting friendship. Ferrus effectively was the big brother figure for many of the primarchs,everyone respected the guy,and horus clearly saw him as one if the best,he is also known to do everything his way unapologetically and always said what he thought directly. Contrast it with perturabo,who suffered in silence and accepted very task given to him but secretly resenting it. It would have made for an interesting dynamic,and qlso would make perturabo getting forge breaker that much more impactfull. I also say this because perty evidently trusted ferrus enough to tell him about the fact he sees the eye of terror all the time

It is a nice change of pace from what was expected of Perturabo going into the series. Where most of the traitor kin of devolved he became greater. I truly hope he is forced into becoming a Daemon Primarch during the Iron Cage. That all the self-withdraw is all apart of his goal to become free from them in the end.

I prefer the fan theory he is in fact not a Daemon. Nothing ever confirms it, as in nobody stood in front of Perturabo and went "Yep, definitely a Daemon Prince." Such as a Grey Knight. It's a best a throwaway reference from a character who never meets Perturabo or seen him since the Horus Heresy (Imperial Records). Considering how the Iron Warriors reject any mutation and do not worship the Gods of Chaos in any way, I really do hope Perturabo is not a Daemon Prince and it's revealed in a big way, such as nearly destroying the Grey Knights to save of his brothers, because their anti-daemon tactics won't work on him. Lastly, Fulgrim tore a hole into Perturabo's soul in his ascension to a Daemon Prince. That may very well make it impossible for Perturabo to become a Daemon himself.

There are some ways to make it work. Like he could do it for the legion, since they don't really work without Perturabo - he's organised it specifically to be like that. If I was writing Iron Cage, his ascension I feel would be motivated by him giving up on humanity - like he's just lost faith in the Emperor ruling humanity since he wasn't punished for Olympia, he loses faith in himself because he did it, and he loses faith in Horus during the Siege, so at that point he's believing that there is no dream for humanity, because you have to understand that _every other person_ he knows has a way of breaking, so at that point all he sees is humanity's doom. Turning to chaos I think is him resigning himself to the idea that "in the grimdarkness of the far future, there is only war."

Peter Turbo was always chasing for other aproval. Inside himself he always craved from that hint of reconaissance. Despide being arguably the best builder of machinery, population improving facilitys and architect of magnificiant palces of all the primarch. He didn't seen himself as warrior despide being gifted for that and wanted to be left alone doing anything else. Being forced into war made i'm motivated by spide making him a even more dangerous tactician to please Big E. He realised that you don't always have and do what you want in your life and that what made him more mature and improve in that field. What about it? He’s not Mortarion with a hate boner against warp and witches. He’s a practical man. He discovered the warp was a pathway to great power, assessed its dangers, and appears to have taken advantage of the power without chaining himself to one of the Gods. Now, he probably miscalculated the true nature of the Warp, and didn’t realize it had costs beyond service to the 4 gods, but hey, even Magnus misunderstood the Warp, and Magnus was studying it since we was born.

Well technically Hammer of Olympia isn't the first canon story in his chronology or the narrative... but the first thing actually has to do with this exact thing as well... it's him being born from his pod. He wakes up on an alien world, yet he knows and understands everything he needs to do. But he doesn't understand what he SHOULD do. The story I mean is "The Emperor's Architect". It also has Perturabo learning how to talk... literally like a child. Yet that first time speaking is mostly just asking questions or giving orders. "Give me steel, give me charcoal" something like that. It's a good read honestly. And canon.

They live much longer lives and will therefore have to mature at a much slower rate. This view makes it feel like he learns from his mistakes to make the Eternal Fortress. Dorn goes in expecting the Old Perturabo. The Perturabo who would cut off his arm if it made him look stronger. He got the new Perturabo, who had goals of his own and wasn’t afraid to chase them and work with anyone and any tactics to win.

Like the only Primarch who actually became better on the traitor's side as the HH progressed. And the first spot we see Pert narratively is in the Magnus book, but I think McNeil's interpretation of the primarch books makes Perturabo out to be how Magnus sees him, even though he's depicted in scenes outside him and Magus's interactions. We do see some hints about how his stolidness is something of an affectation, and the implication with the scene where he crushes the warp-compass suggests that his inhumanity in decimation and the such is more for the legion than for himself, and there are some interactions between Forrix and Ahriman that shows the difference in their attitudes, but it's more meant to show Ahriman's arrogance more than any character development in Forrix.

Assuming I got the lore right, I think a big indicator of his internal struggle was when his adopted brother won the sculpting contest and Perturabo reacted by secretly smashing the statue. Perterabo, all his life, was a wunderkind. Everything just came to him automatically, without effort. So he couldn't understand how his brother could do something better then him just because he had spent years and years in effort. And we see this again when Perturabo decimates his legion for failure. In his mind Victory should have been a forgone conclusion. It couldn't be that sometimes one will fail even with the best of plans. I think Perturabo had this insecurity he never admitted to or could even acknowledge. At least in the beginning he couldn't fathom that one can learn from failure. So when he failed, it wasn't a life lesson. It was this personal flaw he couldn't understand. And Perturabo had spent his life understanding everything. Understanding was his reason for existing. He probably changed eventually. This is just my personal theory from what I know about the character.
