(30 Apr 2020) Trans women in Peru say they face worsening conditions brought on by the new coronavirus pandemic in a life that is already harsh and full of discrimination.
From inside a little house that five trans friends share, Xiomara said on Wednesday that they find themselves pushed to the limit as they are not able to work.
Peru began a strict lockdown on March 16, allowing only basic businesses to stay open, including markets, banks and drugstores.
To help some people get by with the day to day necessities, the government announced it was handing out a $224 US dollar one time payout to help face the lockdown without a job.
Xiomara, a 27-year-old prostitute said she has received nothing.
The LGBT Rights Observatory of the Cayetano Heredia University says that trans people in Peru have almost non-existent access to jobs, leaving most of them with prostitution as their only option to find an income.
The study says that the population of trans women in Peru has difficulty accessing identity documents and social security services.
Peru has recorded almost 34,000 COVID-19 cases and 943 deaths.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
