Try Ground News today and get 15% by visiting ground.news/perun. Offer is only valid through the link! Many thanks again to those who contributed to the preparation of this video. Just to repeat a point in the corrections and caveats section before I'm blacklisted from a country, I wanted to note that while I call the Stryker an American vehicle (in American service) - I acknowledge its Canadian DNA and manufacture. Also from the caveats that's worth putting here - while the BMP-1 had a major impact on the development of AFVs everywhere, I do want to call out the West German HS 30 for beating it into service with a similar concept. Another editing flub was calling RUSI the "uniform" services rather than "united" services institute for lord know what reason and then missing it in editing. There would be more caveats and notes (such as noting Czech production of the BMP in addition to USSR figures) but I ran out of text allowance. The biggest caveat is to note, as always, that loss data from an ongoing war is subject to a significant degree of uncertainty. And apologies to the Germans in the audience - Early in the video I say SdKfz 241, instead of the correct 251. Missed that in editing. As always, thank you all for your engagement and support!

forget what the joke was exactly but there it is. Bulgarian General asks Russian General why their vehicles are so horrendous in side. The Russian replys : - we wont our soldiers to be afraid from the vehicles, not the enemy. When the doors open they will gladly attack becouse they ware already in hell. if you go to war however you will prefer russian equipment since if it breaks you can fix it with a hamer, wire and blow torch. Nato's equipment cant be easyly fixed and is more succeptable to problems. Just found aout how unreliable is the Bradly and was shocked. I tought they fixed it already. after all it is 80's tech ...

I'd go one further on Stryker in that it's really a Swiss design (MOWAG Piranha) laundered through Canada by way of a US prime (GM, later GDLS-C via LAV) and eventually turned into a US sourced solution (Canada no longer manufacturing Strykers, though some parts are still sourced there).

The Bradley compliments tanks when used in combined formations. During Desert Storm the optics on the Bradley were better and conducive to identifying targets for the Abrams in a open desert environment. They play a tank destroyer role with their ATGMs at ranges in excess of an MBT's main gun. The mounted infantry can be deployed to provide security or screen terrain while the Brads and Abrams provide overwatch. Bradleys can also be loaded up with supplies to sustain the infantry in the fight. Think ammo, water, rations, and Javelins. IFVs aren't tanks but they allow the infantry to keep up with the tanks and if a BMP or T-72 pops up they have the means to deal with the threat.

I mean that quote was a joke. Quite obviously IFV is neither of those. Burton was a idiot who demand tests for something army already know, because he couldn't understand role of new at the time IFV. Movie though place him as protagonist actually place hints pointing that he was wrong. Like when one of soldiers correct him regard procedure. That they test scale of damage with increasingly stronger charges, not if it survive obvious overkill. Or when he test Romanian RPG on doors, one of officers counter it with statement that those were strong doors (what is true. Ammo depo doors are usually heavily armored). Also no. Bradley didn't start as M113, it was always designed as counter to BMP. It is why commanding officer was triggered. Because program in fact did have overruns and they needed push in production something capable to counter it, even if they would correct known flaws later.

No. Those are to recover from losses. Zaluzhny himself plainly stated in an interview a few weeks ago that to conduct a successful offensive toward Melitopol and eventually cut the land bridge would require of the west to provide AT LEAST 300 additional tanks, 700 IFVs/APCs and 500 artillery pieces (with all the corresponding ammo). If the Ukrainian ground forces really had ballooned to 3x their original size of around 3000 armored vehicles (all categories comprised), they should by far have that capability already. Instead, they are asking for brand new vehicles their crew will never be as potent with, in the current conditions, as the ones they were initially trained on, and will require a complete rebuilding of their logistical infrastructure. Go figure.

For the M113, there might be a Variant Ukraine might want. The Mortar APC M106. It started with a 107mm and 81mm Mortar variant but was upgraded to a 120mm Variant. It isn't a Battle Taxi anymore but share the same Parts as a M113. so having 2000 M113 and 100 M106 would be a great mobility bonus, even when the M113 is slow. And as a German: We got 350 Marder on the Scrapyard, waiting for scrapping. They need to be refurbished, but they can be putt back into combat condition. But it will take time. That are the Marders when German Politicians say: They come from the Industrie, they are practically already sold off and waiting for their refurbished Shipment to Greece or to be scrapped. Former mech infantry soldier here. The job of the mech infantry is not primarily to keep up; that is secondary, their main job is to keep infantry off of the tanks.They are a stiff arm that keeps dangerous elements at range so the tanks can knock them out. Infantry can be absolutely deadly to armor via both anti tank weapons and using a radio to call in artillery or air. When a tank gets to a position that does not have a clear view and therefor no idea of what is up ahead, the mech infantry can clear that area which will allow the armor to push on. Battlefields are not flat; they rise and fall. Mech infantry can clear those rises where the other side of that rise is unknown. When armor has to take a stationary position , which they often have to do, the mech infantry are able to keep infantry away from them.

A thing to say about captured r**sian vehicles: Sometimes units don't report to their command that they are captured IFV or a tank or other stuff, so they can keep it (often territorial defence). The thing is, if you report that you captured let's say IFV, that IFV would be taken from you for inspection, maintenance and probably reassigned to another unit. So in order to keep it, you simply don't report that you have those things. But obviously there's some cons: if on paper you don't have IFV, than you're not receiving said maintenance and ammo resupply.

Also something of note for the Bradley in 1991. While yes it did do quite well we forget that Iraq's armor force was pretty old. According to IISS MB in 1990, only 1000 of their 5530 tanks were T-72s. The remaining 4500 were basically equally split between T-62s, T-55s, and Chinese Typy 59/69 tanks. Russia is pulling out a lot of old hardware, but they're not at the stage of making nearly a third of their tank fleet T-55s...

An ATGM of the type the Bradley carries will seriously damage any modern tank, at least a mission kill which is all that is really needed in a fight i.e stopping the other guys from shooting back at you. A T90M with its gunsight obliterated or having a track blown off is not a functional piece of kit any more. Flipping the turret of a T-72 is spectacular but it's still only a mission kill in reality.
@WWFanatic0
@WWFanatic0 Жыл бұрын
@@robertsneddon731 For sure the Bradley is still a very deadly IFV, particularly to Soviet designs from the 80s to early 90s. My point was that while Russia is pulling out old kit, if an ODS era Bradley goes to Ukraine its typical targets will be much better protected. I've not been able to verify them, but I've heard accounts of Bradleys defeating tanks in ODS with just the autocannon. A T-55's top armor was vulnerable to autocannon fire (hence the idea of the A-10s gun). Even an old T-72 wouldn't have such vulnerabilty though. Basically the Bradley was fighting mostly tanks and IFVs that were a decade or two older than it in 1991. In Ukraine they'll likely go up against targets of similar era (assuming they're getting old models) and in some cases newer vintage. It's still a highly capable vehicle, but it won't be nearly as easy a fight and unlikely to be a stomp like 1991 was.

The t-55 was less than 40 years old at that point and still a viable machine, the most common NATO main gun was still between 90 and 105mm. The t-72 fleet is now about 50 years old, and a t-72A in 2023 is less effective than a t-55 back in 1991

Back in the late 80's, I was an armored reconnaissance specialist (aka cavalry scout) in the US Army and trained on teh M-3 Bradley, FYI, the M-2 was the Infantry version and the M-3 was the Cavalry version with a minor interior layout. We spent as much time on foot as we did mounted. With a lot of experience in and out of an armored vehicle, I can tell you that visibility sucks in an armored vehicle. My experience gave me more respect for the German tank commanders that went into battle with their head sticking out of the hatch. M113s still have utility as an armored supply vehicle, delivering food, water, and especially ammo to front line units engaging attacking Russian troops. They also make excellent ambulances, not just for front line troops, but also for civilians in cities being shelled with suicide drones and missiles. The M113 offer some protection from shrapnel and flying debris as well as being able to push through or go over debris in the streets. I have had the experience driving a MT-LB at the National Training Center because my unit was briefly tasked with being OPFOR. I was the shortest guy in my unit and the only guy that can sit up straight in the back of the MT-LB. I cleared the framing beams by about half an inch. Everyone else had to sit hunched over. Fortunately, I was driving so I actually had much more room than everyone else.

We have much more than that gathering dust in the desert, and I think the percentage that are serviceable in our desert boneyards is going to be a lot higher than Russia's in their boneyards in wet and cold environments, not to mention corruption and lack of maintenance on the Russian side. What you say around 50:10 about the use of AFVs and IFVs reminded me of the famous WW2-study on the enforcing of bomber planes. They had created pictures that showed where all the returning planes had gotten hit and initially wanted to enforce these areas with steel plates. Then someone came up with the idea that these hits are on planes that had RETURNED. Those hits they did not see on the returning planes were probably those, which were really dangerous and deadly. And so they enforced the areas of bomber planes, where the returning planes had not gotten hit. And it worked. There is some term, some "...-bias" that refers to that phenomenon, too. However: Maybe also with AFVs and IFVs one should not look at those infantry-losses with destroyed AFVs and IFVs but at those infantry soldiers that have not been lost because these vehicles were in use. The number of losses might be way bigger, were there less AFVs and IFVs.

As a Swede I would love to see my country supply Ukraine with some of our CV90's. Like you said in the video on Sweden and Finland joining NATO we basically have such a disproportionate number of vehicles compared to active dutry personnel that it's a question if anyone in our armed forces needs to walk anywhere. I'm sure we could spare some for Ukraine.

Earliest that would happen is Sweden become a former member of NATO. Even then, I doubt we will seem much of this. I'm thinking Sweden would instead want those extra cv90 to build up a larger active personnel.

As Finnish I would hope we could give our modernised BMP-2s (they are equipped with thermal sights) to Ukraine and buy some CV90 mark 3s (possibly on a cheap due this) for replacements from Sweden.

@@jintsuubest9331 Well a day ago I would've said you're probably right but believe it or not we're apparently sending 50 of them, as well as the Archer artillery system. For once I'm glad to be proven wrong.

Your comments on “if you’re a video gamer” got me thinking: we could create a “Perun Approved” HOI4 mod for this. Russian govt spirits: Kleptocracy -50% div recovery. Conscription resistance: -30% recruitable pop factor, -10% Div Org. Available Field Marshalls : Gen Corruptski, Gen. Griftskorolov

Great video, I have but one suggestion: dont do more than 8 or max 10 lines per slide. If more it becomes difficult to see. This is true for an actual presentation for a large audience, but just as true for an audience watching on a cell phone.

Even the development of the Marder started before the development of the BMP, and Marder prototypes were tested even before the development of the BMP started. The Marder was not an answer to the BMP, but the successor of said HS.30.

One thing about using the bmp 1 or 2 over the 3 is that the troop compartment layout is considered more useful. The bmp 3 has a lot of firepower but limited utility for things like casualty evacuation. Source: former Russian conscripts.

Re the AFV in static warfare, that is kind of half of what the Universal/Bren Carrier was intended to be used for, supplies in, replacement troops in, wounded out. So the idea that some form of tracked lightly armoured vehicle would be useful in static warfare has been around a while. That other half was to transport a support weapon and team across shelled and bullet swept ground (allegedly in significant discomfort).

UC was used in pretty much all the roles discussed, including battlefield support. With 110,000+ produced, it was the workhorse of the British and Commonwealth forces for 20 years. I was surprised Perun didn't mention it in the history portion. Far more important than the Kangaroo (and I say that as a Canadian).

Thank you for reminding everyone that the headline $$ for delivery is not an outlay now. It is a historic outlay and represents an initial purchase cost years ago. In many cases these vehicles are to be decommissioned at a not insignificant cost. There is an overall net benefit in donating mothballed, set for decommission, materiel as you forgo the decommission/ scrappage cost. Russia pays that instead ;)
