For me, the basic premise of this argument "do we need God or not" is flawed. Its not about do we need God or not, its about whether God exists or not. Logically speaking, denying the existence of God is hard. Therefore, its a smart move by Dr. hoodbhoy to twist the basic question of "whether God exists or not" to "whether we need God to understand the universe".

Many people need to get a grip and realise that science, as we know it today, has no business in spirituality, whilst religion does. Islam, as a way of life, has genuinely pushed it's adherents to reason and observe the world for what is; and those that actually practiced these ideals in the golden period of Islam did indeed produce some of the greatest works in human history. However, religion now has been cultivated into a form that is devoid of anything interesting. The curiosity and that encouragement of free thought in the Islamic faith, has sadly now turned into a monotonous and a very materialist religion, instead (but it is changing!). Atheists, or free thinkers shouldn't bother people of spirituality, or take them out of their comfort zone; as often an atheist/agnostic ponders deeply over philosophical ideas and spirituality than the average religious person does, indeed. It amazes me that people often have to try and scrutinise Professor Hoodbhoy on his religious beliefs and ideas, as he clearly isn't religious and neither does he claim to be. He is an excellent scientist, not a philosopher! We admire him and are proud of his amazing works. As a muslim, with an extremely strong conviction of my faith, I realise that the world we're living in today, at such an exciting yet testing times for humanity as a whole, that has come after the advent of deen e Muhammad (saw), rahmatul lil alameen, cannot just be a mere coincidence. I'm sure people of all religions can try to connect the dots and learn their history to make sense of the present, but the great sacrifices our Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his holy family (asws) bore to advance the ideals of humanity, to live without oppression and injustice, to be humble to things we do not know yet is a fantastic fellowship to be part of, and we need to understand how their great deeds continue to play a positive role to this day. People who like to bash muslims, need to realise there has been a sustained media onslaught against Muslims for many years now, who have, as a result, had their nations invaded on sheer lies. Over a million muslims have been killed in the past decade alone by non-muslims. The extremist wahabbi ideology that has been spreading this wanton image of Islam has frankly been supported by the freedom loving western states, which shows the extreme hypocrisy and disregard of human rights, despite being host to societies the rest of world likes to follow.

Except that there is no such thing as an ideal form or good, this is an abstraction that has no bearing on reality. The dead hand of Plato prevented, arguably, the discovery of self evident scientific realities, such as evolution, due to his espousal of essentialism. Take a concept as simple as a straight line, that which has length and no width, yet in practise, it is impossible to demonstrate and doesn’t exist. No amount of essentialism can change this observed fact. That contradicts what we realise was only ever our own implicit assumption that we assumed to be the truth. Any line we can draw or envision would of necessity HAVE to contain width, as it’s corollary. This point is important, since much of our thought and the phenomenon we deem absolute, are actually just approximations devised by ourselves for our own convenience. They are NOT an accurate representation of truth. It’s you who needs to refresh their own base of knowledge, not mr Hoodbhoy.

Concept of God is a man made concept. That’s why there are more than 4000 religions and thousands of gods. Every religion claims to be the right one, but don’t provide any evidence. Therefore, if one religion says that they are right and other 4000+ religions are wrong, then with the same logic their religion is wrong too. Religion has no relevance in the modern world. It’s just a tool created by rich and powerful to control and manipulate people.

Science is a process of discovering what already exists and it may be an indefinite process. Creationism is total fiction and not consistent even philosophically. اللہ کا لاکھ لاکھ شکر ہے کہ ہم جیسے عام لوگوں کو اللہ نے اتنی ٹامک ٹوئیاں مارنے سے بچالیا ہے ، اور سیدھا سیدھا اس مقصد پر ہمیں را سخ کرلیا ہے کہ انسان اور جنات کو اللہ نے اپنی عبادت کیلیئے پیدا فرمایا ہے اور پھر یہ بھی واضح کردیا ہے کہ اطمینان تو صرف اللہ رب العزت کی یاد اور دین متین اسلام پر عمل پیرا ہونے میں ہے ،مادہ پرستوں کے علاوہ شاید ہی اللہ سے زیادہ کوئی دور ہو ، " فاالحمد لله على دين الاسلام والشكر لله "
