The first thing you want to do is verify how much water you have in the lawn. Ideally we want 6-8 inches of water saturation in the soil. Without water the grass goes into stress dormancy and goes brown. Lawns are sensitive to this process and if you leave your grass dry for too long it dies. Its important to act fast. Once the grass goes brown we usually have two weeks to wake it up.
Step 1 is to push the water back into the lawn. We do not want to water too much too soon. I recommend for the average system to water 1 hour daily for 6 to 10 days to catch the soil back up. For hunter mp rotator systems this means you'll need to water two hours per day or more. I recommend watering each zone 15 minutes at a time 4 times per day. this helps the water saturate into the soil. If you push too much water too fast the water will run off the top.
Step 2 is using a recovery product. My preference is essential plus 1-0-1 at 4oz per 1 gallon over 1000 sq ft. Other products such as greene county fert's rgs and Revive granular works great.
Optional Step
- If the dead spots have sat longer than 2 weeks it may be wise to lightly rake through the dead matter. this will help encourage the new growth to find the sunlight.
Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.

Nice job! Great to see the before/after, proof it works. So, after the initial saturation, did you continue to over-water after spraying or reduced water to 15 mins per day? How can you tell initially if its drought or nugs or fungus? I will check your other videos to see if you cover other issues. Thanks for bringing these videos to youtube and sharing your solutions.

@@pestandlawnginja ok so I always feel like it’s proper neighbor “etiquette” if you see your grass trespassing and you should trench and place edging on your property line to contain your grass 🤪 I know maintaining my property is my responsibility and if I had grass bordering my neighbors grass then I’d probably not even notice, but every time I’m out pulling and spraying my neighbors grass that’s trying to take over my xeric front yard (no fence so my neighbor can clearly see what’s happening) I’m fantasizing about a perfect world where its a common courtesy to contain your grass - you’d never think it was totally ok to let your succulents run wild over your property line - but when it’s grass, it never occurs to anyone! ok rant over 😮‍💨 lmaooo just had to get that out

Impressive results Jared! When I water 3/4" to push moisture into the soil, the grass blades develop a little condensation when Utah nightly temperatures drop until the soil dries down. It isn't visibly wet, only very slightly wet to the touch. Is that typical of having moist soil and will that constant slight nighttime moisture lead to fungal problems?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja Жыл бұрын
we have been unusually humid the last few years. if you're seeing mushrooms i back off a few minutes on my weekly watering until they disappear. condensation on the blades is fairly common. as for why it isn't visably wet after a big water like that....... best to dig into the soil and verify its all there. I've seen some very rocky or sandy soils where the water went straight through. I ended up suggesting 5 to 6 nights a week watering with shorter times to keep the water at the roots.
@eugenieandrews8874
@eugenieandrews8874 Жыл бұрын
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks Jared, sorry for the confusingly wording. What I meant was the wetness from the condensation on the blades of grass is so slight that it isn't visible and barely perceptible to the touch, but the soil is definitely visibly wet. I take it from your response, that slight wetness from condensation won't cause fungus?

I'm in the PNW (like @Ari-sv6sf) and after taking core samples this spring, I'm only seeing water in the top 1" of soil on core sampling. This is consistent with what I saw last summer, where the lawn went dormant despite heavy watering. It subsequently developed a fungal infestation which I treated with Gravex 20EW. Seems like I have a significant soil issue. Time for core aeration and sanding??

I'd start by doing a water output cup test and figure out what reality is. this is two fold. 1. you'll find out if you have an inconsistency in that area / areas. 2. you'll understand how much water is coming out per zone. see myallgreen.com/watering and perform the video exercise at the end of the page.

Do you have a recommendation on what type of spreader goes along with the Essential 101? Thank you.

Is the Revive spray OK, or would you recommend the granular?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja Жыл бұрын
in these instances i prefer the granular over the spray. the spray is more of a surfactant and salt nuetralizer. don't get me wrong I like the spray. it also works great as a soil penetrant by chemically scuffing the soil surface.

How often do you apply the Essential plus 1-0-1?
@pestandlawnginja

Te applications can be done weekly. In the past the most I've needed to two is two applications 7 days to 2 weeks apart. Best to be certain your watering properly before you start the applications

Ginja, love your videos, we've had 2.5in of rain one weekend in the last 6 weeks. Other than that just watering in products (1/4") here and there. But already treated for melting out/leaf spot and nutsedge. Temps have been 70day, 55 at nite, one week was 80. 4" core was mushy clay 2" down, then looked kinda dry. 6-8" water saturation, im assuming my fungus issues would be much worse. Any ideas why i would have fungus and nutsedge? Thanks brother.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja Жыл бұрын
nutsedge is commonly a perennial weed. booger of a weed to have come in. if you have a cool season grass tenacity does great as a post emergent for nutsedge. as for the correlation between the two. couldn't tell you :)

@@pestandlawnginja yea i have tttf, northeast ohio. I use sedgehammer+ to get rid of it, like u said, every year. Just dont understand with not alot of water or humidity why i see it and fungus constantly. Applying prop and axoxy. Maybe the heavy clay soil holds too much moisture?
@danieltaulbee
@danieltaulbee Жыл бұрын
It sounds like you could use deeper waterings and more time between them. Let that water work its way down deeper into the root zone, while the top inch of so does our from the heat. This forces deeper root growth and deprives fungi of constant top-level moisture. Possibly amend with a bit of compost after a fall aeration to address your clay issues. Notice I said "address" and not "fix." Amending soil takes seasons. There is probably no one and done solution for your issues. Gradual progress for the win!
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja Жыл бұрын
@@joelehoe3542 its possible. I've seen people with layering issues with this same problem. clay on top sand below. I would play with the watering times. just take it down a few minutes per zone until the problem goes away. in the end if you have layering issues the problem may not be resolved like this. I've used soil penetrants to help scuff the soil surface. revive liquid from home depot works well in these instances.

Do recommend core aeration or liquid aeration?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja Жыл бұрын
well.... depends on your goal. the issue I have for both is they need to be used for what they're intended for. aeration helps with compaction and helps remove thatch but it disrupts the soil. liquid aeration can help reduce thatch but doesn't do anything about the debris on the surface which is what dethatchers were made for. liquid aeration also needs to be done over and over and over throughout the season to have any benefit. I think generally there's a mis conception of what they do.

Grass never goes dormant with this pattern. The redish color and uneven pattern are typical from Anthracnose. It is everywhere this year. I have it in my own lawn, at shade with dialed in irrigation. In dry soil you'll never see small patches of healthy lawn surrounded by redish yellow grass...ever.
