This is incredible! Have you tried integrating the bottle slicer into the machine? I see this as being an amazing semi-interactive technology/art display for science centers or museums having a whole system going in line -- bottle being cut, turned into filament, and fed right into a printer. Might have to try messing around with it!

It's an amazing small filament factory at home haha Yeah, I already made this kind of slicer and works great! You can check my IG reels or YT shorts where I create for example Coca-Cola bottle from Coca-Cola bottle (bottleception haha) using this upgrade. I am a high school teacher that has introduced 3D printing at a high needs school. The students are amazed at the opportunities for entrepreneurship and creative prototyping. I want to challenge my students to learn how recycle old prints or bottles and to make their own filament. This is a really inspiring video. I’m now thinking of reaching out to sponsors so we can begin our own production/prototyping/recycling stream!

Fantastic project and it even looks professional without any wires showing. I think an added feature, to make this perfect, would be an rpm counter for consistency of the final filament.

the RPM is a static 30RPM due to the motor used.

it is not an rpm controller that need to be used but a feedback loop with a sensor that mesure thickness of the strand and adjust motor speed. It increases cost but is a needed feature to be able to use different pet bottles without problems.

I love it! If I may suggest an improvement, try to make it into one machine: 1st level - a grinder for grinding bottles to flakes. 2nd level - a hopper funnel that collects the flakes into one heating "pot" 3rd level - an injection nozzel that outputs the fillament! That way you reduce the amount of involvement by the user, and the outcome is more uniform. Great work sir! Well done!

@wtflolomg

@@AVMMM That's an idea, but moving the flakes through the hot end/nozzle is tricky and that's what makes it a bit more expensive. In the plastics business (I'm going back 25 years ago, when I was an embedded systems engineer for the plastics industry), we'd use a screw extruder to push pellets, or flakes of ground up product (that was at a dairy, where gallon jugs that failed in production could be re-used). The best way to feed is pellets, of course - some consistent shape provides the best movement. The whole process was a big bigger in scale, of course. The key to reclamation is in the extrusion system.

Thank You so much, it's motivating when people comment in the way as You do guys! Improvements can never end haha Later when version with cutter and removable spool will be ready I will try to make it totally automatic, cutting connecting plastic string and so on. Even inteligent checking what's the thickness of the wall will be implemented, basing on that information cutting blade will change cutting height. But it's a future...I have plan for it, but first things first. Let me quote myself from other comment: Now I'm working on the cutter module, I have to make it the most simply as I can, that all people even without special tools can make it easily. Yes, that's my next biggest challenge, to connect many plastic strings, wind on a bigger spool and process it all! Connection have to be strong enough and not too thick to not affect on filament diameter in these parts. When I will figure it out how to connect plastic strings efficiency, next useful thing will be removable spool, now when we process just one bottle, even really big one removable spool is not that important, but later will be necessary.

I’ve seen several different videos displaying various methods for this DIY recycling process, but this one seems to be the most simplistic design I’ve seen so far. It’s also a relatively compact design, which is a huge plus in my book. I see some comments complaining about how much time it takes, but considering the advantages and the money saving potential, it’s a fair trade in my opinion. Given the fact that you have to use individual bottles for any of these methods, it’s obviously going to be time-consuming. To be honest, I think it’s a great way to pass the time while waiting for your prints to be completed. It’s also a great way to utilize materials that the majority of us use and (most likely) throw away every day. Thank you for the video! I will definitely be looking into implementing this design for myself! You also just got a new subscriber!

I have also designed pet filament maker, couple of tips: Bearing cutter is a lot more precise than blade cutter, 1.7 mig welding nozzle is absolutely amazing and destroys any 3D printer nozzle due to much longer melt zone, you don't need to prepare bottles as much, I had great success just stripping label off cola bottle. If I had to prepare each bottle under stove, I would have quit long time ago.
@TylmanDesign
@TylmanDesign Жыл бұрын
Thank You for Your amazing comment! Yes, I'm aware that bearing cutter is better, but I was designing my machine to allow for majority of 3D printing community can do it easily. Blade cutter is really easy to implement compared with bearings that we have to modify. In the future for more demanding audience I will prepare for sure bearing cutter with electric regulation of the string height, but for now I focused to create the most affordable and simple device. Coca-Cola bottles are the least demanding bottles, they are almost smooth. Some of the water bottles are really "wrinkled" that cutting it in this state will be impossible. I will check these mig welding nozzles, it interested me a lot!

@@TylmanDesign Mig contact tips 1.7mm can be bought for dirt cheap in local welding stores (bout 10$ for 10 pack) they also have the same thread MK8 as 3d printer nozzles and require no drilling (exiting filament expands a little), as for blade cutters, i had lots of problems with them like filament being stuck, in was really annoying so i made bearing cutter with a simple microdrill (angle grinder can also work but its a bit harder). I have entire uniformity test performed on some of my videos about filament diameter variance.

It's awesome! One hint: adding mechanism with a weak spring to push it to one side when it's pulled to the spool. So your finger is obsolete then. Also what's a possible solution for connecting filament together for a whole spool?
@TylmanDesign
@TylmanDesign Жыл бұрын
Im happy that You like it! Please could You explain Your idea a little bit more? I'm curious, but I think I don't understand enough what You mean. Yes, that's my next biggest challenge, to connect many plastic strings, wind on a bigger spool and process it all! Connection have to be strong enough and not too thick to not affect on filament diameter in these parts. Of course there is easy way, to use PTFE tube and connect processed parts of filament into one long, but this solution doesn't make me fulfilled. Now I'm working on the cutter module, I have to make it the most simply as I can, that all people even without special tools can make it easily. Designing in a way to allow people even with no experience make everything by their own is pretty challenging but so satisfying! When I will figure it out how to connect plastic strings efficiency, next useful thing will be removable spool, now when we process just one bottle, even really big one removable spool is not that important, but later will be necessary.
@haenselundgretel654
@haenselundgretel654 Жыл бұрын
@@TylmanDesign I really appreciate your answer a lot! The spool is not removable? I guess that'll be easy when attaching the gear fully to the spool even when printing with it. Shouldn't be a problem for someone making his own filament to print out a couple of spools with the gears on them! For making longer raw spools I guess, you can make something like an heatable clamp (like for making curly hairs). In one side you put one end of a raw material and on the other side another end of another raw material. Then you press the heated clamps (with the material on each side) together and by this fuse the two ends together. Probably you can use non flat clamps. I don't know. For the spooling mechanism you might use a small pressing lever with a light spring which pulls or pushes the lever in one direction (like your finger in the video). THis helps for one direction. And because the spring is sooo light it might even be pressed to the side by the material when it winds itself on the spool side by side. So it would be "actively helping" in the direction you helped with your finger and would just be pushed back when the material would be rolled on the roll in the other direction. So the spring would be parallel to the axis of the filament roll and just push/pull like your finger. I wish you all the best with this awesome project! And by making it open source you're giving so much to the world!

May I suggest a simple method to connect filaments? I dont know if this will work, just an idea. So, if there is some mechanism to pull back the filament little bit at the nozzle end, and one mechanism in front to insert the previous filament. I am hoping the two ends will melt inside the nozzle and when the spool pulls, it will be connected. A burst of higher temp may be required to properly melt and join both ends, then temp can be lowered to 200 and then the spool starts pulling. Please let me elaborate. when the temp reaches 200, you pull out little bit of filament, then cut clean at the nozzle mouth, now mechanism pulls back the string from back side, creating some space at the mouth end of nozzle. mechanism in front of mouth inserts the previous filament, and temp rises to 250, the back side mechanism which pulls back string, now pushes it a little into nozle to connect ends. then temp lowers and you continue as normal. I didnt understand any of your spool talks, but please address the weak spring idea, I think that is more important, as I felt having to aling filament on the spool all the time is just cumbersome. I think you need to substitute your finger with a mechanical part. maybe loaded with spring or perhaps static.

It would be interesting to see if your machine could handle polyethylene bottles, and you could 3d print it. Here in North America, we tend to have deposits on pop bottles, but not on a wide variety of large polyethylene bottles. I understand polyethylene requires higher temperatures, more like ABS.
@TylmanDesign

Printing temperatur of the HDPE(polyethylene) vary from 230 to 260 celsius degrees, so quite the same like PET. @@TylmanDesign You need to shred and inject it through an extruder, because pulling it deforms the filament diameter. When I pulled PE through a knife, it stretched, but I didn't know about the bearing cutters at the time. So that would cut better. But what's the point, it stretches too much in pulling extruders. PVC, the same. PP might work, but it's hard to find. Nylon might work, but you can buy that at the weed wacker supply. But screw extruders will always work. Try RepRap 3D Printer RecycleBot.

I'm able to print only PLA and PETG, is ABS mandatory for parts in contact with the heating head? Are there any alternatives?
@TylmanDesign
@TylmanDesign Жыл бұрын
I was measuring temperature of the screws and it was about 65°C. PETG withstand max "just" 80°C unlike 100°C for ABS, I always liked to have wider safety range. You can try to print heater base using PETG and see if it won't melt/damage, but I don't give a guarantee. Maybe try to ask someone from 3D printing community in Your area to help You to print these elements from ABS. I think probably PETG will work, but will "wear" much faster, specially during the pulling proccess there are strong forces that can permanently deform the "soft" PETG.
