​@@theone5404 It's still just corn. Chicken byproduct meal is listed separately because it contains more than just meat. Cats are obligate carnivores and shouldn't be eating that much corn. The main type of protein in corn, zein, lacks some essential amino acids and is therefore not of a high quality. More transparent ingredient listings is needed in pet and human food. If they had to group ingredients and give percentages and people realized how much of their cat food is made up of corn rather than meat, they may think twice.

To add to the Instinct...I have one cat that absolutely refuses to eat wet canned food or raw/cooked meat. She's a kibble girl all the way but she loves the freeze dried nibblets in Instinct, and its the only way we can increase the amount of meat in her diet which is a big plus for her. So if you have a picky cat but want to add more meat, freeze dried seems to be a good option, at least for us.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for doing this! I switched to Carna 4 about 3 weeks ago and when I say there is a HUGE difference and improvement in my cats skin and fur the coat is silky and shiny. Even my boyfriend was bragging about how nice his coat was.

Hi there! As someone who works for a pet supply company that has a veterinarian/animal nutritionist, I love hearing your perspective! I agree with a lot of what you said, but I did have a question about what you said about soy. I also do not like seeing it in pet food since it is often used as a plant-based protein source and is not as easily digested. However, I was wondering about the part where you said it has the possibility of causing endocrine disorders and hormone imbalances. I know for humans, it has always been a controversial ingredient because some people believe phytoestrogen increases estrogen in men and women and can cause hormone imbalances, thyroid issues, and other endocrine issues. However, what I’ve seen in my research is while phytoestrogen can bind to estrogen receptors and have some potential negative effects, they do not bind as firmly as estrogen and has far weaker effects in comparison. So my interpretation has been it plays a small role in these issues, but not as much as some people may believe. I’m just curious if you have more information on how soy may effect dogs and cats differently, since they are facultative and obligate carnivores respectively? Thank you again for sharing what you’ve learned and for helping others learn more about pet food! 😊

In the research that I've done, the soy theory for people is pretty much the same as it is for cats and dogs. Some breeders attribute phytoestrogen for infertility in their females, however hard evidence is harder to come bu since it is currently being investigated.

I’m surprised to see Royal Canin to be pee pee poo poo. I feed my diabetic dog Royal Canin prescription glycobalance. It’s not cheep either. But it’s recommended by my vet. Now I’m wondering if it’s beneficial to her I’ve been feeding my cats the Orijen food. They absolutely live it. But I have never seen it at Petco. I have to get it from pet supply store. I’m now thinking about changing over to Rawz.

My friend works with animals at the university in my city and she recommended schesir wet food for my cat, I like it, it’s not processed at all you see real shreds of fish or chicken and it’s high quality enough for human consumption. For dry food I go with farmina brand it’s good quality too, you can look into these yourself and the websites have info on the ingredients

I’ve been feeding my cats the Hill’s sensitive stomach/digestion dry food for a few years & this comment is my thoughts exactly on Hill’s! I had been feeding my two cats Taste of the Wild but then my male cat started having a problem with bloody stool/blood on his anus & the vet couldn’t figure out the cause, & the only thing that consistently stopped it was feeding him the Hill’s sensitive stomach formula, & I was really disappointed with the ingredients list. But I’m too scared to attempt to switch them off it when he hasn’t had a flare up since we made the switch 😞

Exactly my experience. I have a +3-year-old cat with feline aids that means the world to me. She almost dies at 1 year old because of poor quality cat food (local brand) so I switched to Hills SD and she is in perfect balance as she has blood test hemogram every 6 months, then I started hearing 'things' about Hills being just ok cat food because to the ingredient list, and that there are other much better brands, and so and so, which made me change to other brands with results below Hills. We owners see the difference in our cats' health between Hills and other so-called 'super premium' brands.

Idk, my cats coat looks the healthiest it ever has since switching her to Iams Proactive Health. She was eating Meow Mix and I’ll never get her back on that. It dried her poor skin out so bad and her coat looked dull, and she was overweight pretty bad. Ever since switching her over she’s at a much healthier weight that’s been maintained, her skin isn’t dried out, she isn’t shedding as much and her coat is shiny and looks healthy again. I’ll definitely consider a way healthier option for her for sure, as I want the very best for her. But so far it seems like she is just all around healthier with the Iams Proactive Health. Everything it claims to do on the packaging, it has done for her. Edit: I meant to put this under someone else’s comment

I’ve been feeding my cat (her name is July and she is an American Short Hair we got from the shelter a few years back) Purina Fancy Feast canned food and various brands of kibble, for the treats, we fed Temptations for her treats. Funny enough my cat who was 19 years old when he passed away was so picky with food when we first got him and barely ate anything. We tried everything canned to dry to raw, he was barely eating and when he was eating he was throwing up.what brand did he finally keep down? Meow mix. My vet was eventually like look if he's going to eat meow mix and is not going to throw up that's good 😆. Yep my cat absolutely will not eat dry food, and she has kidney disease so medicated wet food is her best bet for healthy kidneys but she REFUSES wet food and I had tried switching her onto wet food way before she even got diagnosed and she will not switch, no matter the brands, flavors, etc. She is such a picky eater

My cats got lower urinary tract disease, one died from the disease lead to a distended bladder ,acute kidney failure & chronic kidney failure !! The other one healed by my home made foods for them !! The one died from the disease was prone to it for a congenital issue ,never healed completely even I cooked for them almost everyday !! Now ,many vets are speaking up against dry foods finally !! So, for someone like you speaking against dry food is awesome !! Much needed ! Fancy Feast's turkey & giblets wet foods ( back in 2011 to 2015 or so ) was the best ,the most nutritious wise balanced as I calculated onto " dry matter " all others were ,either poor or bad or o.k. !! Our two girls got used to the Taste of the Wild stuff. I tried to upgrade them, but neither of them seemed interested in it. But Cali, the cat in my profile picture was once a wild feral kitty, and had to fend for herself for a while. So she is a skilled hunter. She still will catch wild prey and eat it. And a big variety of mice, rats, squirrel, rabbit, frogs, snakes, even a few bugs, etc. Every once in a while i may get a piece of beef liver. There may be excessive amount of blood in the bag with it. I will pour that into a little dish, and she will clean that right up. We are not entirely sure, but she has to be about 15 years old, but remains very fast, a great jumper and very healthy and happy with us. She may be a beast to other animals, but she's always a sweetie pie to me.

I'm from Russia and now we have some troubles with imported pet food and our producers can't provide the quality that foreign companies can. My cat used to it Spanish or Czech food and now our market lack of them as there're no shipments. So it's important not to know the brands, but to understand the composition. For at least the past year, I have researched over 300 pet food ingredients. At least regarding the first 5 ingredients, this is a very good and accurate review. I would add that cats should eat mostly wet foods due to the high moisture. Cats should not eat a dry food only or mostly diet.

@@StopWars420 pet nutritionist would imply a wide range of animal nutrition knowledge. Cats being the second most common household pet I'd imagine she understands that absolutely basic fact. Even I knew was aware of the hydration concern with cats eating dry food yet this person above thinks they're more informed on the subject because they've "researched over 300 pet food ingredients"... probably from their couch in between sharing Facebook memes. It's annoying to have lay-persons interjecting their opinions and representing themselves as more knowledgeable than legit professionals.

I've been wanting another for quite some time but Im going to wait until my two kids are out of the house. They really need a lot of attention and I just don't have it to give until then. Fantastic video. Very informative. My own rule is that all big brands that one knows from TV commercials are at the very very end when it comes to quality. Whiskas, Felix, Sheba and Royal Canin are one of the most known brands in germany. But when it comes to quality they cannot compete at all. For me the best dry food companys are Orijen and Grau.

Yes please do an Instinct cat food review. We’ve been feeding our cats the “limited ingredient Rabbit” dry food and man does it give all three of our cats horrible smelling poo (several Amazon reviews said same thing). Took them off of it for that reason- but if it’s really good for them will put up with it 😊

OMG! I have no idea Royal Canin can be that bad. I was recommended by my vet and in my country it considers one of the expensive and high quality foods. Since I adopt my cat I have used Royal Canin, its been 4 mouths now and he gain so much weight he is 8 mouths old and 3.5 kilos. I will change his food as soon as possible. My cats and dogs are on nulo. The wet food (for the cats) is pretty good, meaty fish. Or fishy meat... I even give some of the fish to my fish on occasion. They like it too. Actually the wet food is tiki cat, the dry kibble is nulo.

From Oregon here too. Great Job on the video, and am so glad that you state dog/cat eat MEAT. They also eat anything on the floor, especially dogs. Also need to note, animals will eat whatever their nose tell them to eat, not a care about the visual.

I'm so thankful for your videos on this topic. I was kinda thrown into taking care of a cat basically as a part of the house we're renting. She's old and has digestive issues and terrible fur, noticed she barely drank enough and the food she has been given was only dry and very cheap. So I'm taking steps to hopefully raise her overall health. She has a water fountain now that she loves and I've been altering her hygiene area so it's better for her. I'm hoping to work our way towards better food products but until I can find where to buy them I'm at least buying foods in the Cheers category. Again thanks for sharing, it helps a lot to know what to look for and avoid in pet food.

Posted elsewhere, but too good not to share: We fed our cat Fancy Feast Savory Centers. At first she liked it, then started eating less and less of it. She developed chronic very soft (not quite diarrhea) stools, was vomiting nearly everyday and had bad allergy-like congestion. She now has early-stage kidney disease (from age, I presume) so she gets Hills dry KD. I started wondering if the Fancy Feast had some role in her GI-tract and allergy issues. I stopped giving her the wet cat food and her stools were nearly solid within a few days, vomiting is rare and allergies are much less. We gave her Fancy Feast originally because she wouldn't eat the premium brands, we were trying to get her some weight gain, and I had read its good to give a mixture of wet and dry. Originally she was on Crave dry, and didn't like it enough to keep weight on....she LOVES Hill's KD, thank goodness.

I feed all my pets 2 kittens and a puppy) Royal Canin vet brand foods (both canned and kibble) because of their strict quality control measures. With all the recalls, and severe illnesses in animals due to contamination, it’s super difficult for me to trust other brands. I even make my own puppy treats (obviously using human grade food). I’ll give them Pure Snacks because they only have one ingredient. I supplement with mackerel and pumpkin.

Yes!!! Finally someone else who hates Hill’s Science Diet. I’m so sick of it seeing recommended by vets and people everywhere. 🙌🏼 I even asked Jackson Galaxy during a chat on Discord he does after he uploads a video and he said that it’s awful and so many people shared their horror stories. It’s what they fed my cat at the shelter and so she’s been having it as a snack (I feed her mostly wet) and she’s getting switched today! I hate that so many food is grain free because unless they have an allergy it’s not really necessary as it can cause heart issues. Cats aren’t dogs. Hoping you have one of these on wet food. I’ve been feeding her Canidae balanced bowl wet food. Can’t find much info online. Hoping it’s alright! 🤞🏼 Ps- do you have this image somewhere else? It’s hard to see with you in the corner.

@@LoveAndSnapple I hear you. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, the pet food market is so over saturated. I trust a pet nutritionist’s opinion more than a vets to be honest especially if they’re recommending Hill’s. I did a lot of research by looking things up online and by watching videos here on KZbin and Hill’s is just downright awful. I recommend you head to Jackson Galaxy’s channel and watch his series about food. I think there’s 5-6 videos total if not more. How dry food is made is downright appalling and why I’m even more motivated to find a better dry food for her. I feed her mostly wet and just want to have the dry to supplement as a snack when I’m working late as I found out if a cat doesn’t eat after 6 hours they can get nauseated. She only gets 1/3 cup a day as it is. NutriSource is what I plan on switching her too. Look up “cat nutritionist reviews cat food” is what I believe I looked up on here to do research.
