The big door makes cleaning so much easier. It’s the best thing I’ve ever bought for them. And being able to take off the doors helps too! I just ordered a giant new wheel for mine and I’m having to take mine apart and take that middle main level out to fit it. Your cage set up definitely helped with inspiration for how to set mine up this time cause we have somewhat similar stuff. I just have a lot more foraging toys! That’s probably a good next step for your cage. Foraging toys that are great for rats are mostly designed for birds!

I know this video is old, but I wanted to leave a tip, on plastic cage bottoms vinegar is a huge help to get the grime and stains off. I just soak my bottoms in the tub in vinegar and water (I do 1part vinegar 2 parts water) and it really helps and neutralizes odors.

I suggest you look into bioactive setups as in the long run, after switching to it I both improved their experience/ health (cream has a cronic respiratory infection under treatment from his previous owner) and saved money on bedding (you'd be suprised how much bedding a big cage with two shelving units requires). I breed rats, have been for about a year now, my experience..... it's hit or miss with these things. I got one of those saucer running wheels from Petco, only 2 have used it. Hammocks, the girls always seem to tear them up. Those Igloos, the only rats I've seen use them are the pregnant females. I watched tons of videos from Em and Shadow preparing for this, decked out cages like they do, half the stuff I bought was NEVER touched by them, just for me to have to clean EVERY piece of décor I've placed in the cages. Food wise, I stick to the Oxbow Garden Select version, costs more, but seems to be a better product than the Oxbow Essentials, stay away from food that has corn as one of the first 3 ingredients else you'll have fat rats. And toys, OMG, toys marketed for Rats and other small pets are insanely priced, cheaper cat toys go a long way.

How did you tame them? I literally tried everything. I I’ve got them for six months now but they don’t climb me and stuff. I can’t pet them and I can’t pick them up.when I put food on my hand they bite my finger. Do you have tips on that?
@whocares-sq7zh3 жыл бұрын
Don’t try to pick them up if they aren’t comfortable with you yet. You have to gain their trust. Try to hold out a treat with washed hands and see if they come over to your fingers and take it. I hope this helps. Personally I got my rats to warm up to me this way. It also might be the breeders fault for not handling them at a very young age.
@floater98733 жыл бұрын
If they are biting your finger, try food offering food on a spoon until they understand. Also, the best way I found to tame my shy rats is to literally just sit with them while their cage door is open. Offer them treats and just talk to them, they will learn fairly fast you aren't a threat. Don't corner them and don't pick them up for a bit. Also don't pet them until they're readily coming up to you. It'll take a bit of time and patience, but rats are smart animals and they will soon learn you are not a threat
@boop86853 жыл бұрын
Patience is absolutely key, rats who are shy or scared need a lot of time and kindness to adjust. I agree with sitting and letting them come to you, it's one of the best things to do. After a while of letting them come to you and not doing anything to make them nervous (this might take quite a few different play times for them to start to do that): when they come to you again, slowly hold your hand out to them, but if they back away or try to bite, slowly back your hand away as well, and try again next time. If you aren't already, absolutely give them as much free time as you can (the best is at least an hour a day out of the cage) and sit with them. Only let them free roam in your room if it's safe for them, otherwise get a playpen (I made a huge one our of cardboard). Talk in a calming voice to them, scatter treats around their cage and playpen/play area for them to find. I recommend watching a lot of informative rat videos! Eventually if they're okay with you but still bite, I've found that squeaking when they bite you gets them to stop? It sounds a little odd and I don't remember where I learned it, but when they bite you just make a loud, quick squeak noise and they tend to stop and realise they shouldn't do that (but only do that if it won't scare them, once they're used to you!)

i just doubled the size of my ratties cage! i started with an all living things starter kit cage thing i got for ~$60 and had my 2 boys in it, but i ended up with 3 after a long chain of events and it just didn't cut it- i found another of the same cage for $50 and was able to put them together! it's huuugeee, when it has to be moved my dad's doing that lol but my boys love it! :D

The spacing between the bars is it suitable for mice too?. I know it would be a very big cage for them and more room than they'd need but I have 5 mice and like to see them happy x
@taylorallen41753 жыл бұрын
I very much doubt it, the cage is quite large for tiny mice. They’ll definitely escape and I don’t want that to happen to yours! 😊

@@nikitagoulding6151 No problem at all! I’m honestly not too sure for a mouse but if you check out “Emiology” on KZbin, she gives really good tips on how to care for rats/mice and show you good cages. One of her videos is all about mouse cages, hope this helps! X

Question.Can you remove the layer thingys and ramps from the cage and be lest with a clean slate
@human-tk2fo Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you have to take it partly apart to get the middle floor out, but the shelves can be moved easy, as can the ramps

I found this cage on market place but I only want a single. Could I just use the bottom part and sell the top? I’m confused about the lids for the cage, with the top part gone it leaves the bottom with an open lid? Please could you give me some advice x
@sylvisterling87822 жыл бұрын
Evidently, with the Critter Nation cage you can just set up the bottom part (wheels & lower cage) and put the top (from the second level) on top of the bottom part, & bingo! Single cage.

how do you keep the bedding from falling out?
@cavyart2 жыл бұрын
You don't. There is a company that makes trays with sides that fit in place of the ones that come with the critter nation. Shadowtherat on youtube has them. Until I can get them I'm just using a couple high sided plastic kitty litter pans on each of the big levels with some bedding and igloos/houses that they can nest in.

@sunshineandchaos3 жыл бұрын
I keep my rats in the cage, unless the cats are locked up in another room.
@ashleyking32183 жыл бұрын
Hi Tip make sure they cannot fall from the top to the bottom as that can be fatal Great work Also that’s not quarantine at all You need a completely different air space so like downstairs at the opposite end from the other rats Also make sure to keep them in separate rooms befor the intro it can cause aggression towards the new rats and can stress out the new rats Take intros very slow I use emiologys intro method which isn’t hers it’s a popular method to intro rats to each other and in my opinion the best way But your doing amazing Great work GOOD LUCK ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@alexandrastott3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I currently have them in totally separate rooms. I have watched Emiology's introduction videos and will combine that with what my breeder advised. Thank you for the comment ❤️

I do still love it! That is a ton of money though, see if there are any used large cages in your area (even if its not this style exactly- there's other good cages out there). If you have a few rats (not just 2), it would be good to invest in a large cage.

@alexateurcat10 ай бұрын
I have the same cage as her! It is a double critter nation, but you can grab a single. I reccomend shopping at the dollar store for plenty of rat items, I reccomend the channel "Emiology" and any of her rat videos! Watch all of her vids on rats and note in a journal how u can improve. :)
