it is great to note that the filter drums must be taller than the pond. Once the pump is turned off (due to power interruptions or when cleaning the pump), the system might overflow.

Just a tip, better to have a solids radial filter in the beginning. Easier to clean and purge. You will have to clean the filter less often. Tilapia make a LOT of waste.
@m4st0rnoob-102 жыл бұрын
you can also use this as an opportunity to collect their waste and use it as fertilizer for watering cans etc. I believe if you keep it in metal containers it keeps for a while as well.

Reverse the flow, first pump the water to plants, later filter it, so that the fish poop will help plants grow better, and also ammonia and nitrate are absorbed much quicker

Just want to point out that solid sedements will accumulate to the tubes in time. Im not sure because im no expert, but solid sedements increases the pH or acidity of the water which is harmful to the plants and the fish. The fundamental flaw of the this system is that there is not much nitrate for the plants when its filtered first, but then if you reverse it solid sedements will accumulate. Im no expert in aquaphonics and i think that this system is excelent because it doesnt need a complex plant bed. I just want to point out the flaw of this system.
@twiggshomestead64973 жыл бұрын
Negative, I believe the ammonia and nitrites from the fish poop must first pass through bacteria called Nitrosmas and Nitrobacter Bacteria. They basically eat the raw waste and poop out nitrates in a plant-available form which feeds the roots down line waiting to suck it up. The way it is set up looks correct to me for the proper nitrogen cycle.

Great setup, but u can directly use the fish water. No need to filter it and use. That water is rich in Nitrate, Nitrite and ammonia needed by plants to grow.
@dawnt67912 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking, too. Removing the solid waste is good, since that could potentially clog the system, but all the bio-media rather defeats the purpose, since the nitrifying bacteria that would set up in the bio-media removes the very nutrients the plants need and would otherwise utilize.

Hi, interesting video with some clear details. Some years ago I took an introduction course in Aquaculture, specifically RAS. Traditionaly those systems get designed (calculated) for specific species & numbers... (1) Did you use a special calculation/dimension module ? (2) Maybe you could draw a flowchart of your system and show it a few times in your video to indicate clear where every component showed in the video is actually in the whole system (3) Where in the system (flowchart) are your plants ? Because I am actually concerned about the optimal design to remove ammonia out off the water... (4) do you periodical control the biochemical parameters ? Sorry, for all those questions 😅 All the best

Thanks for sharing your RAS setup on KZbin. I have a question though (hope I'll get a reply 😊),: 1. How many Tilapia fingerlings did you put inside your pond/pool? 2. Does the water coming from the plants goes back to the pool and vice versa? Or you have a drainage of the water that comes out from the plant container? 3. Do you change the water every certain period of time? I look forward to hearing you. Thank you so much 😊
