@TheFinickySir19 сағат бұрын
A compact revival is exactly what is needed in photography right now. For far too long, manufacturers have been catering to the pro and enthusiast market. Is a young person starting out in photography now going to buy an X-T5 with an expensive kit lens? No, they usually don't have that kind of money. The ZS99 for a young person makes a lot of sense because it's everything you need to get started with no extra lenses to buy and its affordable. I'd bring back a newer version of the Fujifilm F31fd. That camera had great focus, exposure even in low light, and beautiful jpeg rendering. I have a S90, but I agree that a new Canon G series would be very good for anyone thinking about getting into photography.

22:00 Most of your audience skews towards *photographers*. Not necessarily younger or older, but photographers. However, I do want to say the self-reflection in your segment is admirable and is something many reviewers, journalists, (and also forum members) would do well to pick up on. Also, if *I* had to choose one camera to be re-released with USB-C, it's the Nikon AW150. We always sold tons before the summer, and even during the year it was one of the cheapest cameras available. It was a little rugged, aimed at kids, and so on, so it was a great starter camera for the 5-10 age range. Or at least it appealed to parents in that sense :)

I think there are two paths in digicams: The old ones with a more analog look. And the modern ones that can replace your camera. I am on the side of the modern ones. A RX100 VII, RX10 IV, G1 X II, LX100... are enough cameras for the vast majority of amateur photographers. They are discreet, compact, light, with good image quality. You can even blur the background, increase the ISO, use filters, use flash, manual mode, raw format... everything you could want. But the brands understand that this would cannibalize the sales of their mirrorless cameras, because a modern sensor in these compact cameras would be just as good as an APS-C from 5 years ago.
@MW-ud8zp5 сағат бұрын
Idk man, old digicams and "analog look"? It really isn't. It's very specifically a visibly digital look. Old digital, lo-fi digital, nostalgic maybe?

They do not care one bit about corner sharpness or megapixels or LOCA or red eye or ISO noise or any of that technical stuff, that whole look is the entire point, it's a vibe as they say. They are just having FUN with photography and we could learn something from them instead of arguing in comments sections about autofocus and IBIS.

In August last year, for her birthday, I bought my 23 year old daughter a 14 year old FujiFilm FinePix F80EXR 12mp point and shoot that was boxed and apparently almost unused. It cost about $80 for a camera that was about $300 new. Her only other experience is Apple iPhones and she says the P&S produces MUCH better "party photos". It is all down to the relatively powerful flash, something that all phones lack. She uses it to take pictures of her freinds in social situations = pubs, clubs, parties etc. They all like the brightly illuminated subject with a dark background. For selfies and general photographic duties, however, she still uses the phone. Her biggest issue with the P&S is that she has to take the battery out and stick it in a charger for an hour or two before she can use it. So... it is a tool for a very particular situation. It isn't going to get her interested in 'proper' photography!

Last month I started my digicam journey, but I went for something pro. The Canon G16. I was surprised by how much fun it is, although it has its flaws. Then I bought the G1 X and you can feel the difference, it has a bigger sensor than the M4/3. Finally I went for the G1 X II and I think it is perfect. It has a longer and much brighter lens than the original G1 X, but with the same size sensor, which allows you to blur the background. Basically it has all the advantages of an M4/3 but is smaller and has a brighter lens than the typical 3.5 to 5.6. Unfortunately, Canon lost its way with the G1 X III. It added an EVF that makes it bigger and changed the lens for a darker one, so not only do you need to raise the ISO more but you also don't blur the background as much as with the II. I would like to see Canon re-release a G1 X with a lens like the one on the II or better. But I think Canon knows that this would cannibalize sales of its APS-C mirrorless cameras.

1:19:20 My Canon EOS R6 (bought March 2001) has handled rain quite well. Recently I haven't used transparent shower caps anymore, not even during heavy rain: that was possibly a mistake. Since I have the photos until the camera shut down, I can provide at least some numbers on what it took for the camera "drink" a bit of water, and shut down. It had already rained during that day but it wasn't much. Then it started pouring around 16:00 (shooting started at 10:00) and I had (without knowing it) about 30min of shooting left. At some point during that half an hour I noticed that the EVF started to become darker. Eventually the camera shut down, I was done for the day, and by the next morning (~16h later) the camera had dried, and I resumed shooting beach volleyball. I opened and detached everything that I could and placed the camera on the best ventilated place in the hotel room. So I'm guessing water got in somewhere near the eye piece because I couldn't see very well anymore. But it was quite a bit of water. Let's put it this way: in that kind of rain anymore would be soking wet within a minute or two, underwear included. I suppose very minor self-promotion is allowed: I'm @denarced at Instagram.

re point and shoot cameras - i was in sicily over summer, in a lovely small town, cefalu. we go to a little photo spot. We wait patiently while 6 teenage girls dressed to the 9s for a girls dinner or something pull out 2-3 tiny digicams... they're shooting a backlit scene, they've got the flashes going having the time of their life. they can't be using a camera thats taking anything more than a single digit MP image but it's clearly a vibe. as a 38 yr old who's first digital camera was a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P9 (go look that up) it of course pains me slightly, but i guess these things are pretty cheap on ebay, or they're finding them in their parent's/relatives cupboards. The world is always broader than you think it is. i think the pentax 17 was an example of that.

Through having bought some "parts and fix" lots, I have many examples of point and shoots, including a nearly-complete set of Canon G's (original series, not GX). If I choose any of them for a camera walk, by far the most fun choice is one of the superzooms, of which I have the Canon SX210 IS and the SX260 HS. These are just barely larger than the ELPHs, SDs and As (most As used AA batteries), but have that tremendous zoom, with which you can take unique, compressed shots even on a walk route you've photographed many times. Both my SXs have sensor dust, so on a modern redux of the SX it would be nice to have a way to get to the sensor without trashing the camera.

The biggest problem with Panasonic ZS99 is the use of small sensor with big zoom range over a larger sensor with smaller zoom range. Big zoom range only sounds good to somebody who knows nothing about camera technology, but in practice having a larger sensor is much more useful. I bet more than 95% of images that people take are of something relatively close, and in those situations having a large sensor is very useful. Compared to that, having 20x zoom gives you bragging rights but you almost never shoot something that is very far away. I don't think it's age related. It's company selling big specs instead of actual image quality and something that people will often use.
@bigtroublejake19 сағат бұрын
I haven't finished the podcast yet, but so far I think Jordan hit the nail on the head. I'm on the younger end of the 18-25 age bracket and people aren't necessarily looking for good image quality. Whether they realize it or not, I think one of the main things that attracts people to point and shoots is the look of the harsh and direct flash. Smartphone "flashes" really don't stand up to them in any way. I think people also like the contrasty look of older point and shoots. A lot of the cameras that friends are using for this are hand-me-downs from their parents that got used to record their own childhood, so there's a good bit of nostalgia at play. Also the orange date/time stamp has definitely become part of the look that some people want to recreate. I do think that having a dedicated camera is also part of it. From what I've seen, it is mostly girls/women using these cameras, so it's pretty easy to pack a small point and shoot into a purse or bag that you were already going to bring. They're a bit tired of using a sterile phone camera, so having something physical that they can mess with, pass around, and show off also seems to add to the appeal. The bad image quality can also hide some imperfections. Smartphone photos also tend to lack contrast, where these cameras just have tons of it, and it reminds people of either their childhood, or photos that they've seen of people at clubs/partying from the early 2000s. This is the niche that the Kodak and Yashica cameras are trying to fit into. Purposefully bad quality and contrasty, but small and simple with a proper flash. More elaborate/complex point and shoots are definitely also becoming popular, but I do think a lot of that is from photographers. There does seems to be an influx of people wanting to take photography more seriously, and so these seem like a good stepping stone for them. There is also a subset of well-off people that want the point and shoot look, but want something more impressive or feel like they need something more capable (even if they aren't going to push it. I'm not saying this is bad or anything, this is just what I have observed). I do think new models of cameras like the G7X and RX100 will come out, but it does take much longer to develop them, and they're a much bigger risk business wise, so the companies may have needed more time convincing that they should actually invest in these sorts of cameras. P.S.: A lot of these cameras get used when you're out with friends at like dinner or a party, so I think this is the main use case for these types of cameras, and that's also why the flash aesthetic is so important, and can't just be emulated with a phone
@bigtroublejake18 сағат бұрын
Btw, this is all just from personal observations, and I definitely don't have any data to back this up.
@dasaen19 сағат бұрын
I think the issue is these cameras would not have as much recurring revenue as interchangeable systems, so it is hard for companies to just make a batch and then check out. I rather them just make compact crop mode lenses that make a camera the same size as a point and shoot. For example that leica d lux lens.

People aged 19-21 didn’t grow up with point-and-shoot cameras-they grew up with iPhones. They’re drawn to something tactile, cute, portable, cheap, and good in low light, like cameras with flash. Flash creates cleaner low-light images without needing to stay still, which appeals to them. They’ve realized phone cameras aren’t improving enough to make a meaningful difference, and with social media compression, high MP images aren’t necessary. They want memories that feel cool and special-something phones don’t offer. Polaroids could fill this gap but are costly and impractical for online sharing. Enthusiast cameras like the Fujifilm X100V have highlighted how intimidating big cameras can be, leading to stiff, unnatural photos unless you’re a model. Small point-and-shoots, on the other hand, put people at ease, resulting in more natural, relaxed photos. In my experience, these compact cameras are perfect for capturing genuine moments.

I bought a Sony RX100V last year and it was so close to what I wanted, but having to pop out the evf *and* pull out the eyecup was ever so slightly a bridge too far for me and I ended up returning it. While these resources are valuable for understanding the equipment, it is a bit of a shame that there is less content dedicated to analyzing the photos themselves. After all, beyond the technique, the essence of photography lies in the final image created. Were small bodies gotten rid of as it was difficult to stop overheating ? the tz99/Zs99 has my local dealer very happy. before it was announced he was complaining about lack of compact and bridge cameras. He said over one weekend he had 4 people asked for the older tz95/zs80. His comment about compacts is that most people don't care about video (sorry Jordan), As to the viewfinders. They are so bad on compacts I suspect many users ignore them. It was interesting that when Dave and Evelyn reviewed the tz99/Zs99 they said that people coming in the store want that type of camera When I'm holiday with friends, who aren't photographers, lugging a big camera and a bunch of lenses gets in the way (and as I get older I don't like weight). So I'd like a TZ200/ZS200 replacement with a better lens and a flippy screen. I'd even prefer the TZ100 lens. Amusingly amongst my friends i'm the "photo guy" my friend was using an RX100 and was puzzled that I was using my phone and even more annoyed that he thought my pics looked a lot better....to me if I buy a compact it needs to do SOMETHING my phone can't Some years ago the LX10/15 had an f1.4-2.8 lens I wonder what a fixed lens 1 inch sensor could be if you can get f1.4 on a zoom? 28 or 35 f1 anyone? Equally an LX100 body with a prime lens... we can get an interchangeable 20mm f1.7 pancake if it was integrated we should get a faster package. a 20mm f1.4 LX100? Being able to add a viewfinder via a hot shoe? I guess yes as you can have a small compact AND the add on viewfinder is way better than the small integrated ones. As to a compact to bring back? Fuji XF-1, that was stylish and Nikon DL18-50 should have never been cancelled

I would love to see some successors to all those quirky digicams from the early 2000s with their funky designs. Make photography fun again and less about specs ✨

For me 'macro' never meant 1:1. You can take great macro pictures with something like FZ300 with Raynox converter. You won't get 1:1 reproduction, but you will have much more small detail than with "real 1:1 macro" on a 24x36mm sensor. For me 'macro' means that the picture has more detail than visible to the naked eye and a 'macro lens' is a lens designed and optimised for macro photography.

1:07:00 for slo mo just get a camera you like with 1080 240fps and use something like Topaz to slow it down to your liking.

Interframe interpolation causes more or more often artifacts than upres the resolution. I shot a commercial with the Sony ZV-1 in HFR mode 500fps and Topaz for upres, and it worked out great.

@ I guess it depends what you’re shooting. Wildlife or blowing up a watermelon probably not a good idea to use artificial slo-mo. I’m assuming archery would be simple enough for the AI to assume the needed frames.

You didn't answer part of Jack's question on the f/1.7 lens and why older vintage lenses have these very low f/stops. These lenses were made in the film era, when consumer grade film speeds were ASA (now ISO) 50, 100 or 200. I remember when Kodak Gold 400 came in and was considered revolutionary because it was so fast! Camera shake and motion blur were huge problems with most 35mm film cameras, so the faster the lens the faster shutter speed you could use. Then your problem was focus, and cameras were generally manual focus so opening up your f/1.7 fully wide meant a very shallow depth of field. With manual focus that was usually considered a problem, not an artistic choice! It was also the reason amateur photographers used tripods and flashes/strobes so much more than they do today. My Pentax K-1 can produce really clean photos at ISO 6400. A photo at ISO 6400 using 1/100 and f/8 is the same as ISO 200 film at 1/100 and f/1.4!! it is important to remember that an f1.4 is (in theory) one stop faster than f/2, which is one stop faster than f/2.8. so an f/1.4 lens should transmit four times the light of an f/2.8.

I want Canon to revive the Powershot G7X line. That will be amazing. Sony should definitely revive the RX100 product line as well, although there are rumors that Sony is possibly releasing an RX100 mark 8 sometime in March or April 2025 based on some websites saying "check back on March 2025" for the RX100 VII.

Yeah Chris, GM5 all the way ! Although I would love a full frame GM5. After all Panasonic already made a full frame GM1 with the S9

Maybe it would be a good idea to talk to your fellow Canadian Linus Sebastian (LTT) about a camera crash test. He doesn't care about camera manufacturers stoping to love him. He's interested in Tec being durable. He has the money or at least the capabilities to refund the destruction via the Video.

Just want to say NO to proprietary shoes. There are EVFs that run off HDMI and USB C. Oh and not to upset the Samurai but it's not the actual aperture size that is used to calculate F/Stop it's the apparent aperture. Just like focal lengths F/stops are rounded. Or we'd have F/1.793534

As always great stuff. This podcast made me nostalgic so I went digging for my Canon SD780IS. Yep, it’s still dead. Speaking of old stuff, would you guys consider offering featurettes of vintage gear as a supplement to your current photographic content on petapicel? I have an entire drawer of possiblly radioactive lenses I can provide a samples! ;-)

Just make a camera with a 1 inch Foveon sensor, take the sigma 18-50 f2.8 add a speedbooster and you have your perfect point and shoot.
