It depends on your use case. The best thing about Nikon for me are their lenses for sports and wildlife as Chris says. Their uber-high-end professional lenses, 400 f2.8 and 600 f4, both have the teleconverter built-in, which is vastly more useable in the field than a separate teleconverter, like Canon and Sony have. Nikon also offers superb, but lower-priced professional primes in their 400 f4.5 and 800 f6.3, which currently Canon and Sony have no competition for. Lastly, at the entry-level, they compete directly with Canon's 100-500 and Sony's 200-600 with their new 180-600.
@efstathioszavvos4878 Жыл бұрын
IMO all their Z lenses are pretty good and they are a clear step ahead optically from the equivalent lenses in price from Canon and Sony. Of course those systems offer pretty good quality as well, and other state of the art functionality e.g. for sports, videos etc, and I'm sure in many areas they are better than Nikon. But optically wise they have upped the game a lot especially on the pro lenses, and even at the entry lenses like the Z 28-70. There's ridiculous amounts of optical quality with Nikon atm, at every category and budget either prime or zoom or tele or whatever. Of course there is a gazillion other reasons why one would choose the R system or any other system over Z, but for me if you're a studio photographer, and in general a still life or wildlife photographer, right now Nikon is at least 1 step ahead even if you don't buy top end. Even a Z5 with a top lens is extraordinary. Yes it's slow, yes its screen and EVF are crap. But if the features work for your style I don't think you can get the optical quality with any other big brand atm for the same money. Maybe it is good for sports as well I mean the Z9 sure seems one step ahead of the competition. But I don't know. Haven't got my hands on a Z9 or Z8 and even if I had, I lack the knowledge and experience to judge sports and action photography. I mean for me, it has reached a level where I can literally keep the system forever without a need for an upgrade and just change body when it breaks.

Best thing about Nikon for me was the high quality 1.8s. I'm happy they made 1.8s instead of 1.4s. Before it was either get a not so high end 1.8 or opt for the heavier brighter 1.4s But Nikon with Z made high end glass that are 1.8s that are way lighter. I'd trade the extra stop for that weight loss.

For me as a Fuji fan, their biggest strengths have been colour, physical controls and a solid history of good software updates. These are all things others are now doing... The original X100 UI (aperture ring on the lens, focus ring on the lens, MF/AF-S/AF-C swtich on the body, shutter speed dial on the top plate) taught me a lot about photography back in 2010, with it's 23mm ƒ/2 and APS-C beyer sensor. Not having the 'mode dial' was a revelation, just lock aperture or shutter if you want to, or not... later models have physical controls for ISO too. I'm currently using an X-T4. Using my wife's Canon EOS back then, as a novice starting in P model and so on, you'd take a few shots then look at the settings the camera picked and then move over to manual to tweak further after setting the aperture and shutter in M mode, it was just so clunky vs being in P mode on the Fuji and just changing the aperture to ƒ/4, for a sharp 10cm closeup on a mini tripod, the camera displayed A that you were now in aperture mode, then you want the water in the background to be smooth from a longer exposure so you adjust the shutter speed too and the camera reports it's in M mode, with ISO adjusting appropriately of course. And my wife's EOS would not let you lock aperture and shutter and still use exposure compensation, whereas my X-T1 would move the ISO around when you did that. Anyway I think Fuji brought a lot of that old film camera UI to modern digital cameras in a really good way.

I pretty much ended up being a Canon user by accident - my brother had a few lenses so it was natural for me to just get a fitting camera back in 2009. Then I got myself a bunch of great lenses for the EF system and I upgraded my cameras to just fit that system. Now the time of DSLRs seemed to have come to an end with Canon so the question was what to do next? There are great EF adapters for Sony cameras but of course Canon has the native adapters and the lenses work just like I'm used to. In the end I actually got the EOS R6 Mark II because of the great AF and the IBIS as well as a not totally different interface (although they did change quite a few controls). And yeah: I still love the handling. I just wish they'd open their RF mount to third party lenses, which was the reason I actually wanted to change to Sony at first. The R6 Mark II was pretty much the optimal camera for my needs though and I can still use my third party EF lenses with an adapter so... yeah. But I'm not going to buy any Canon RF lenses either.

One thing that I think you skipped over with Fujifilm is how they create cameras with excellent modeless operation of the exposure triangle (that's not incredibly expensive, no disrespect to Leica). It's not a retro thing, it's being able to not get hung up on how the damn PASM dial works. What a specific aperture? Set it to it, or just set it to auto. Same with ISO and shutter speed. It makes me way faster with photography and I find it also is *much* easier to teach beginners the exposure triangle as well with that kind of interface. I've often seen beginners be more confused by the modal operation and PASM-dial than the exposure triangle itself. I would also give prop to Leica's longterm commitment to film photography. Not only are the releasing new film cameras, but from what I understand, they will repair *any* manual film Leica camera ever, including models before the M line. That's incredible in this day of constantly buying new things and throwing them away. (Too bad I will probably never be able to afford them, nevermind justify it… but I'm happy those tools exist for those who need them).

I am pretty positive I will be going FF with Nikon, specifically the Z5 or 6 first. I cant afford much more AND any lenses, but its a place to start. Honestly I really want to shoot the ZF. All cameras rock!

The Z5 was my first full frame camera and it's a lovely piece of tech, especially with the last firmware updates!

The thing I like about about OM System and Panasonic, specifically with MFT, is that they have wildlife setups that let you approach the genre like street photography. I don't own a FF, but Nikon seems like it's up my alley. I see no contradiction - I just like Nikon for some reason lol

I love my canon R10!! Started with the RF18-45mm Kit Lens. Then Got the RF 50mm f1.8 and I love that lens! But my latest lens I’ve gotten is a EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM III on a EF to RF adapter and I’ve been loving it. Nice and cheap the reviews for it were ehh but for the price I’m able to look past some issues, especially when I’m personally getting great photos with it.

I loved this. So much to celebrate with all the great work these companies are doing. I love that this is an industry where there still is competition. Sony and Canon may dominate, but the fact that the others are still in the game helps everyone by pushing all the companies to innovate and strive to keep prices competitive.

There's always been things I liked and disliked about certain camera brands. I started shooting with Nikon film cameras and I'll always have a soft spot for that brand. The only reason I switched to Canon was because they had the first affordable DSLR, but I never really liked the style of Canon bodies. Then Sony came along with their mirrorless camera system and I switched again. I've used Hasselblad and Omega 4x5 cameras. But, in over 40 years of doing photography I've mainly used three brands. Currently I shoot Sony and I'm very happy with their cameras and lenses. But, I do like the Nikon Zf and Zfc which remind me of the cameras I used when I began doing photography.

Ok, ok, stop the bus.... can anybody say what Jaron was doing in the van staring at Chris while he was using that ridiculously huge Nikon lens in the early part of the video?! 🤣🤣🤣 Only slightly weird... haha

So many good camera's out there, one really just needs to pick the one that gels with them and their use case and they'll be good. Now that doesn't mean you can't good naturally rib your buddies choice of camera. Now I need to go take another look at the OM system. Those features snuck up on me!

As someone that has used many of the brands mentioned and really enjoyed them, but now as a Leica shooter I love the lack of menu in the cameras, build quality is second to none, lens lineup is amazing, and the size has me carrying them everywhere.

It is a great video on the best features of every brand of cameras. 👍 However, having so many choices doesn't allow for an easy decision. May be a 2nd video on best camera for photography, for video, and hybrid. Too bad life magazine is not longer published.

I feel you guys are wrong on the Panasonic part, I myself as an active MFT and FF user for many years in the Lumix system, have complained to panasonic reps about their features not coming to previous models, example, GH6 there are many features like 4K live crop that didn't come to the GH6 and they blamed on the new "processor" that the GH6 is so new and some features have to be tested and such, then the S5II comes out with even 6k live crop, you can upload luts on the GH6 but can't bake them on to the footage, not even for photos, they release a new MFT with that feature and again "processor" so they can't pass it down, so I feel they're falling in to the Sony category for updates, new camera comes out, new processor so new features but not for the previous models, and I could name more...

Totally agree on the Sony and Canon selling points. I had a Canon camera and camcorder from the very early days of digital cameras and loved them. When I upgraded to a modern camera 3 years ago, I tried every which way to stay with Canon, but Sony's autofocus and lens options won me over. Also, Sony didn't have 30 minute record limits at that time. Canon's menus and user experience are light years ahead of Sony however.

Many of the things you mentioned I never did, do or will do. Plus I can't keep track of the complicated ever changing names such as VZ100x, FM20A, SP3X, SP4X, etc. Apparently, all the previous ones were a waste of money spent on inferior technology.

As a person who wants to start with video/filmmaking. Is sony or panasonic better for this? For instance the FX30, ZV-E1 or the S5IIX.
@Durio_zibethinus Жыл бұрын
Couldn't go wrong with those three for start. For Sony I might choose towards FX30 more. Your genre and where will you post your work are more important factors to consider. The mic, lighting, and lenses are your top priorities. Don't forget a beefy pc also a must.

I would be primarily using a Canon R7 if they didn't fubar the RF system by locking it down for so long (and into the future, rumors might say it'll open, but it won't matter until they do) and then refuse to make compact native APS-C glass like the EF-M lenses for the APS-C RF cameras. There are no equivalent 50mm weather sealed fast primes for RF APS-C still, you basically have a premium body and have to pay extra for the bulk/glass of FF lenses to get weather sealing and still get awkward focal lengths. If they had an actual ecosystem for the APS-C side of the RF mount, I think the R7 would still be big news today, instead of just being popular for the week it was announced. It's a shame, I've used the R7 more than a few times for different use cases from portrait photography on the road up to landscape and it never failed me. I'm one of the few people (outside the Fuji cult) that thinks APS-C, and even possibly MFT, is truly the future for general photography (and even specific areas). Even if the bodies for FF cameras come down in size, you still have to have the same massive and expensive glass to cover the sensor. For work, I travel different times of the year in all seasons for journalism and personal projects. My partner I travel with from Japan is who got me to seriously look at the KP as a compact and cost-effective way to get extremely close to the low light/high ISO of a lot of full frames while still being compact and weather-sealed. The point is that the whole "full frame is the future" is mostly just marketing BS spun by camera companies (and by extension influencer shills) to justify only fleshing out and selling higher priced lens lines. My experience comes from travelling around and shooting real world in conditions and places where I need reliability, compactness, and if it breaks or gets stolen it's cheaper to replace (350-400 USD used 12-40 f/2.8 Olympus PRO MFT lens and used E-M5.III body is a lot easier to replace than a 700-2000 USD FF equivalent lens and a body hundreds of USD or more expensive). I don't use my tools to shoot in a sterile lab and talk about spec sheets, so maybe my experiences, and consequently opinions, differ from the average photographer online.

@sabledawn Жыл бұрын
I have Nikons, Fujifilms, Sony, and have owned Panasonic and Ricoh. The bottom line is they are all great if you take the time to learn how they work and what each does well. Nikons are tops for color. Sonys are sharp and quick to focus. Fujifilms are light and adaptable. Nikons have issues with spotting on their SLRs. Fujis are darker than they should be. Sonys aren't ... hmm, free. Learn to use the darn things and you'll find that people who trash cameras just aren't very good at photography.

Do Nikons have a spinning rear wheel on the back of the camera or is it a D-pad? That's what I love about canon. There's 3 wheels/dials so have ISO/SS/aperture all on separate dials ready to go. I've always wanted to try Nikon but have never been able to find out if it has a rear wheel or not. I live quite remotely so can't just go try one unfortunately.
@TheTS1205 Жыл бұрын
@@adamwhittingham86Unfortunately not. But it isn't necessary anyways... For changing shutter speed and aperture there are the two control dials front and back, ISO works on Auto all the time or by pressing a button plus the rear dial. For scrolling through your gallery fast you can slide above the bottom of the display to "fast scroll" 😉
@vj_great551 Жыл бұрын

2:16 thats literally all phone cameras and honestly its a little annoying for some applications and its always weird when watching a review for the camera, deciding its good enough for your application then finding out its all smoke and mirrors when you try to use manual mode.
