As much as I would like to see 40+ homeruns from Pete, I would be more pleased if his batting average and RBI totals improved by over 30+. The 34 homeruns he hit last season would have looked much better if the batting average and the RBIs were significantly higher.

But the truth of the matter is that "counting stats" do matter in MLB. And Pete has hit more HRs than anyone else in the NL since he debuted, and he's driven in more RBIs than anyone else in all of baseball since he debuted. Those things matter. It’s a fair deal. 30-27 M’s a year for a power hitting first baseman with average defense and kinda mid BA is a solid contract. He obviously messed up by not taking that original 6 year offer but that’s water under the bridge. Listen, go out and if you think you’re worth more, go out and be a beast and earn it and then opt out. Stay healthy and prove it now.

I like Pete, I wanted Pete, but I don't understand preaching that he's any better protection for Soto than some $10m 1st baseman (or moving Vientos and a similar third base salary). Last two years he's had the Ks and average of a power hitter, while barely outhomering Lindor. Count the times Soto is walked and Pete grounds into a double play and you're going to be pulling your hair out. Last guy said it well - last year was Pete's "prove it" year and he flinched.
