He links it specifically to religion dogma and existing, wanting to excel in immediate culture, especially religious cultures (of which US is certainly ahead of the pack). He's showing he's human. - That's the Presidential takeaway I get from it.

When Obama ran in 2008, his idealism, hope and ability to inspire were what our country needed after 8 yrs of George W. Bush, 2 wars, one based on lies. Now we need something slightly different because the Republicans and Trump Crime Family have really injured our democracy and divided our country. Pete can bring people together. He will way outsmart Trump on the debate stage, he is from the post-industrial midwest where he was mayor of a small city that was dying when he became mayor and he turned things around. He is gay, but also a person of faith, in an inspiring way that emphasizes his belief in separation of church and state. The evangelicals just won’t know what to do with that!! He also can speak very intelligently about foreign policy, bc of his military service in Afghanistan and bc that’s what he focused on when he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His biggest deficit is that his base are upper middle class, liberal, white voters. He has to appeal to African-American voters, in particular, in order to win primaries in the south and also Latin American voters. Ideas, anyone?

He certainly wasn't the favorite. Clinton was a huge, huge unknown underdog btw. Bigger than any in recent history.
@samuelluria47445 жыл бұрын
Jordan Chiaruttini - Obama was tapped to be the Democratic candidate at least by the time of the 2004 Convention in Boston. After that, it was just a matter of gathering steam. As far as Slick Willy, you might be too young to remember, but the country was as ready as ever, in the early 90's, for a young and charismatic governor from a rural state, who bit his lip alot. Bush was far from loved by we younger conservatives, and there were plenty of young, newly minted, liberals, as well. This was in contradistinction to the previous generation, which only held sway with one solid generation of liberals. So, given the fact that many of us voted for Ross Perot, Clinton was definitely NOT the "underdog" you think he was. Don't assume that every time a younger challenger faces an older incumbent, that this equates to being an underdog. If we want to play loose with the term, then I will say that Bush-Dubb'ya-43 was an underdog. A vast swath be of the country hated his father. And Clinton's leaving office relatively still quite beloved, bode well for "Algore". Obama was on a charmed path since at LEAST 2004.
@jordanchiaruttiniREALTOR5 жыл бұрын
@@samuelluria4744 Clinton literally had zero name recognition outside of Arkansas. He had no national machinery. It was a huge upset. Maybe that's because the country was "ready" as you said, but it doesn't change the fact that he was a Buttigieg-like candidate. Obama was another thing. He did have a lot of progressive support after his convention speech and the books, but he wasn't the favorite. A lot of people didn't think a black guy with a Muslim sounding name could win in places like Michigan, Ohio, and PA. Hillary Clinton was the clear favorite. She had the DNC machinery, she had Bill to stump for her, she had the donor connections. She thought, and so did a lot of people, that it was her turn.
@samuelluria47445 жыл бұрын
Jordan Chiaruttini - You may not be aware of how many candidates emerged from a fraction of the name recognition as Clinton had, as a governor. "Mayor Pete" has about 20% the name recognition that Bill had. Obviously, the immediacy of social media has made the transition from unknown to well-known, a much potentially quicker one. Don't think that Bill didn't have PLENTY of good-ol'-boy backing, in lieu of social media acumen.

@Vasilijan Nikolovski Many of the things he discusses are important to me, but above all else is his messages about freedom and democracy, and also when he talks about the issues like universal background checks that the majority of Americans support. He is catering not just to progressive democrats, but to everyone in America. He seeks to find the issues that Americans can unite behind which is exactly what America needs right now. His ideas can be identified with regardless of political sides and I believe that he is not just saying whatever is required to win, but truly believes in everything he is saying.

"Toto, I think we're not in Indiana anymore..." More so than "the new Obama," for those of us are old enough to remember his 1,000 days, Mayor Pete is the new JFK. I am 65 and watched John Kennedy's inaugural in 1961 and his funeral in 1963. Glorious days, difficult days and frightening days. There are obvious parallels with Pete and JFK, Harvard and Pembroke College Oxford vs Harvard and London University of Economics and they are both published authors with Kennedy's "Profiles in Courage" and Pete's "The Shortest Way Home." The first openly gay Presidential candidate will require even more courage and assurance than the first Catholic U.S. President did in his day. Both men can claim active military service as U.S. naval lieutenants in their Curriculum Vitae. Then there's the shared grace, the quick wit, the stature of someone with proven ability to succeed in public service, be it legislative or executive. They both signal a new beginning--Kennedy a dramatic lurch forward from the post-WWII "baby-boom" era of Eisenhower while Pete provides a possible deliverance from the monstrous horror of Trumpworld now blanketing and digesting every caring, intelligent, and hopeful American as if it were the Blob from the classic albeit cheesy 1953 movie with Steve McQueen. My own life experiences have inured me with the firm and unassailable belief that there is nothing worse for the human spirit than unfulfilled potential or promise. So yes, as we decompose inside the belly of the Blob, what we need is a Moses to confront our political divide as if it were the Red Sea. The prize is nothing less than the welcoming shores of our "currently-missing-in-action" land of milk and honey. We should be looking for an ethical leader, a person of essential goodness, to guide us safely through our country's current wasteland of prejudice and peril. There's so much more to be written but, ultimately, we all need to mobilize and fight for the survival of our federal founders' vision of a Promised Land, indeed, the very same vision which is at the very heart of our American experience. We must vanquish the monstrous values, rebuke the heartless individuals and repel the hideous actions of Trumpworld and recognize and reclaim everything we have allowed to be spirited away. We are a nation that will always be "bound for the Promised Land" because, while the form of the Land may evolve, the essence of its Promise is immutable. It is ours to keep, both our birthright and our legacy to our heirs. Now is the time to defend our American principles and our Jeffersonian sacred honor. President Kennedy, pausing for a moment as he listens to his favorite vinyl LP playing on a Hi-Fi record player, would exhort us to imagine, pursue and behold his vision of Camelot, new, shining and bright. Isn't that the very heart of the tale of Arthur, the once and future king? Fifty-five years of waiting and I believe Avalon has been sighted in Indiana, in the sepia-toned "rust belt" of the American Heart Land. I for one am ready for the portcullis of Avalon to be raised and the drawbridge to be lowered onto a new America. I am longing to revel in its glorious vision of renewed beauty, blooming with bright colors and golden paved roads. And maybe, just maybe, an armor clad Mayor Pete will emerge on his steed wielding the Shield of Virtue and brandishing the Sword of Truth.

Steven Malham, Bravo! And again Bravo! You are a believer! How astute you are, Sir. I have been on the trail of this Braveheart, since Jan 2019. I’m in my very senior stage of life and Camelot & JFK were bedrock- ish for us too, in 1962. Are we just romantics? It’s past Christmas, 2019, and in the entire year I have not come across a more deserving candidate. He puts every other totally in the shade, and without any combat too! His scholarship and exposure to lofty ideals, allows him graciousness when dealing with contenders, who now see the road ahead, and don’t care about the damage to their own image, while using all the ways they are able to, in order to discredit Mayor Pete. When he is nominated, many in the free world will scramble to get aboard, and discretely change their national outlooks to be on par with the USA. Democrats it’s up to you.
