The Seahawks' pass play call at the end of Super Bowl 49 was the worst play call in sports history until the Atlanta Falcon's head coach went them , as the old expression goes , ''one better'' by not once but TWICE allowing the Falcons' offensive coordinator to make horrible pass play calls when the proper call was a running play on both the Matt Ryan fumble when the Falcons were ahead by 16 points and then later in the game when the Falcons got the ball to the NE Patriots' 22-yard line and failed to run the ball to stay in field goal range to win the game by kicking a field goal and going ahead by 11 points forcing the NE Patriots to get 2 scores with what would have been about 3 minutes left in Super Bowl 51.

I'm with you. The top of my bucket list was a SB win for Seattle and we got it. Back to back would have been nice but even if Seattle had scored a touchdown on that play, it would not have guaranteed a win. The Patriots would have had 25 seconds and two-time outs to drive down the field for a field goal to tie the game or a touchdown to win, which Brady would have done with ease considering the way Seattle's secondary was performing.

No, it wouldn't have been a great call even if they get the TD. It was an unnecessary risk with huge downside--and you just saw the worst case scenario play out. Maybe they have to pass to stop the clock, but that's not until you HAVE to, and you don't have to on 2nd down. And you sure as hell don't come out in the shotgun and throw a slant into the teeth of the defense. That's yet another unnecessary risk. Sorry, but any way you slice it, it's a dumb-ass call.

A running back has done this play over and over in his mind as a kid and pretended this on the field even more. "It's the 1-yd line, Super Bowl is on the line with no time left" when you add the +20% (conservative) for the man Being BEAST MODE and the -10% for the strong run defense (which wasn't so strong on the play before), that's as close to automatic as you can get!!!

pete carroll is probably one of the biggest coach chokers in football as a usc fan i know this first hand, in the 2006 national championship he decided to go for it at like the opponents 45, if he had punted we could of pinned texas inside the 20 and there was no way theyde be able to drive down the field against that usc defense with guys like cushing, rey maualuaga and keith rivers, that defense was so good that clay matthews couldnt even find the field, it still hurts cus if we had won that game there would be no dont who the greatest college football team was, would of broken miami's win streak record, not just tie it, and would of won 3 straight national championships

Pete is simply spinning or rationalizing...and it's amazing that others are starting to follow suit. Pete ignored the 1st commandment of the NFL Super Bowl Bible..."Thou shall not pass the football, ESPECIALLY a slant, in the 4th quarter at the 1 yard line and under 30 secs to go and and especially if you have a RB aka 'Beast Mode' in the backfield ready and willing to slam his grill to get into the end zone. Wrong. The first principle is to give yourself three chances not two chances to score. People who say it was a dumb call are dumb. Seattle only had one time out. In order to give themselves three opportunities second or third down would have to be a pass play in order to stop the clock if unsuccessful. If the ran on second and didn't make it, they would have to use their time out then, and it would telegraph a pass play on third down lessening their chance of success.

Truth be told, I don't mind Pete Carroll at all. He sort of embodies the "ra ra" mentality that is good in sports and he doesn't seem to be arrogant, but more fun loving and spirited. He takes chances, and that is what makes his teams successful. That was a great call a the end of the first half to try to score 7 instead of 3. Most coaches would not have taken that chance. I think this whole "blaming Carroll" after the SB is way overblown. The Patriots had the defense set for run, so who is even to say Lynch scores. Not only that, but Butler makes an incredible, instinctive play to steal this game for Pats. To go further, the Kearse catch was lucky as hell and Seattle arguably should not have even been there in the first place, as it took an epic porportion disaster by Green Bay to get them there.

- Pete Carrol is a kinesthetic - Pete Carroll is an American football coach, head coach and executive vice president of the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL) who led to Super Bowl XLVIII victory in the 2013 season. Previously he was the New York head coach. Jets, New England Patriots and the University of Southern California with which he won two consecutive NCAA championships. He is one of only three coaches in history to have won both the NCAA championship and the Super Bowl. My poetic postcard about Pete Carrol: Pete Carroll, the Seahawks manager, was within three feet of a second Super Bowl victory (2014). There were less than thirty seconds to play and he had the two-legged beast - Marshawn Lynch - in his backfield. However, instead of staying on the ground, Pete Carroll chose to throw. It was a mistake and he lost the game and the second Superbowl, but life is made up of choices and making choices form the person and the man, those consequences are created that become experiences. Pete Carrol is a kinesthetic, an instinctive, a team man who makes union and friendship his strength, his life religion ... the strength of a sometimes cruel responsibility. I still feel Marshawn is the heart of the Seattle Seahawks, just look when he came in to support the team when all of their RB's were injured after the fact. The man is as real as real gets, especially for a sports player. He just didn't like the media twisting words and villainizing people as they do to sensationalize things for sales and ratings. That's at the heart of the reason for the crazy interviews where he only would state one line. It's also why the NFL didn't want Marshawn being the MVP, which he likely would have been if he got the call (or the audible, there was a HUGE gap on his side during that play). If the media wants sensationalism, they should find the memo on that so they can really bring that corrupt League down!

I can't believe he just said it was the worst result of a play call. He has to be the dumbest coach for saying that, and he knows it was stupid to say that. He knew he should have ran the ball to win the game and didn't. The Patriots even made adjustments against Lynch and still couldn't stop him.

Even if Seattle had scored a touchdown on that play, it would not have guaranteed a win. The Patriots would have had 25 seconds and two-time outs to drive down the field for a field goal to tie the game or a touchdown to win, which Brady would have done with ease considering the way Seattle's secondary was performing.

Throwing a slant in the middle of the field on one yard away is always risky especially when your qb is 5’11. Could have spiked it. Throwing a fade towards the corner of the endzone was much safer route and stop the clock. Football 101 lil buddy

All of the armchair QB's posting: Seahawks were 0-9 running the ball inside the 1 on the goal line with their RB. Had they been stuffed and time ran out (no timeouts), THAT would have been the worst call in history - PLUS you had the numbers to TELL you that. Get a grip on reality - it was a TERRIBLE outcome but the call wasn't bad.

@@andyvaldez212 I personally think the worse call was the specific play and throw type, an out to the sidelines would have been more safe and you had the time on the clock for stretching a longer play. The call to throw the ball wasn't the worst crime.

As a Seahawks fan, I can legitimately understand why Seattle would’ve chosen to pass on that play; The Seahawks did a run the play prior, and seeing as they were on the one yard line that play, they had to know the Patriots were absolutely expecting a run. That being said, why not try a play the Patriots wouldn’t be expecting? On the flip side though, personally I believe the Seahawks should’ve done a fake hand-off and Russell Wilson finish with the end zone score. Wilson was so fast during those days so he even very likely could’ve done so!

So instead of just biting the bullet and being accountable, he decides to double down and call it the worse "result" and not the worse call in super bowl history. I like Pete Carroll and think he the coach and his book "Win Forever" are both good. But I certainly think the book and philosophy we wrote, both called "Win Anyway" are by far a lot better.

Because someone needs to coach the coach and the players at the same time. So at least one side gets it in case the other (especially the coach) doesn't. All coaches can have a bad day at the office. That doesn't mean they are not a good coach. That is why it is on both sides to make the other side look good, when one side is not having their best day at the office.
