90% of golfers fail to understand this information, which is why they are where they are, instead of much better. This is fantastic! BTW, for those I've read after my post, they fail to realize that he is telling us what to do. That is, understand what he's saying and implement it into our swing. It's a matter of intractable biophysical awareness and basic understanding of GRAVITY.

@@christopheravery3680 no problem. For starters, the comment below ours mentions Pete worked with James Robinson on James’s KZbin channel, it’s very, very good. My takeaways are : you can only deliver the club to strike the ball if the club is in the proper place. By being in the proper place, you don’t have to manipulate the club/compensate for not being in proper position. I think of this as the club needs to be in balance, throughout the swing (takeaway, backswing, downswing). By having the club in balance, and rotating through the swing, the club face is square through the hitting zone. That’s more wordy than I would like to put it, but those are my thoughts. I hope this helps! Make sure to watch the James Robinson video on here, where he takes a lesson from Pete Cowan. It’s a very thorough explanation. I think it was in the last week or two. Cheers

@@christopheravery3680 swing thé loft of your club with your trail right hand little finger. That is it and the only swing thought a golfer should ever have. Why? Because your little trail finger is the weakest part of your body that your brain can actually detect the weight and momentum of the loft of your club as you are moving it up/ down to and through your ball/ and back up around your body from the very start to the finish of your swing. That’s it! Become amazed at yourself and do it every single time; but you must allow the rest of your body react naturally in order for it to work. Cheers 😃⛳️👍👍

This is great! If there is a magic move to get rid of bad hooks this is it. For Mike Austin fans: It's starting the downswing by "spinning the meatballs". As Austin said: That's what you're playing golf, you're throwing that clubhead around a circle with your hands. Before I understood this I was fighting bad hooks when I wanted to hit it hard. Like Pete says: I grabbed it. By "spinning the meatballs" as a downswing trigger I can hit it as hard as I want and the ball goes dead straight.

One of the true godfathers of the golf swing. Cowen ranks with the great Harvey Penick in terms of simplistic common sense instruction. His 50 years of know how were created by a naturally inquisitive mind. I love how he said he became a better teacher once he realized how the muscles have to work in the swing. The club has to reroute in a proper manner well before the arms reach knee level. Any later than that and the swing is doomed. Nobody is talented enough to save it from that point. Not without an insane level of inconsistency. Its little wonder that so many great players go to this go to guru for instruction. Probably the sharpest instructional mind in the world. Possibly ever.

I remember going to st. Louis as a reward for winning our little league championship. We were taken to a golf range, admittedly i was always athletic but had never hit a golf ball they showed me a grip and swing i stepped up and hit a long drive with a little draw. They said beginners luck, i hit 6 more in a row straight down the middle. Golf is a stick and ball game with hundreds of different areas a ball will find itself. Bobby jones describes beautifully the different between a shut face swing and ab open face swing. But he said at impact both swings should be square at impact. Be careful what advice you try to impart based on what swing type you have. There is nothing new in golf just different names.

This is exactly my findings I'm just trying to get the right feel in the transition since I still try and grab the ball like he says. I've tried to shorten my swing and it's helping with this. When I do get a smooth transition the shot is low, long and with a touch of draw in the driver. I know what a good swing feels like now I just need to get consistency and not grab at it. Thanks for posting.

Cowen's demo of turning the club around & gripping the club-head end is really a terrific way of illustrating how a natural swing should look and, more importantly, feel. The whole idea of the club-head acting as a weight, when held normally, is exactly what prevents most newcomers to the game from understanding how the golf swing should look & feel from the ground up. Take away the weight from the end of the club & most students will almost instinctively start engaging the feet, legs, hips, etc. The trick is getting the student to mirror the same movements when the weighted end is introduced again.

Look, if you merely stood up and-without a club-pretended you were skimming rocks in a pond, every part of your body would do exactly the right thing to swing a golf club. Your right arm would be in the correct position at the top, your footwork would be perfect with the lower body leading the throwing movement (not your arm), your left leg would straighten and left hip would turn out of the way which would provide the “Post” and the breaking force that accelerates your right arm and releases your wrist. Just do that over and over and watch yourself. Then you put the golf club in your hand and it all goes to hell.

I more and more come to conclusion that all the movements (hip turn, knee turn, leading hip üst back, just straighen your left leg bump etc etc) that are out there may help but it may also mess up your sequence, ball contact, etc. Why not do the pivot motion in which all body parts move in the same sequence? This throwing stone motion for instance could me more helpful than try to force these different lower body motions for your swing.

Teaching is an art. He is no artist. The one gem in this whole presentation is "don't grab", and even that he did not explain very well. The one menace that stalks all players (even professionals have to fight it) is over acceleration during the transition. Nicklaus called it "flashing" . It's the sudden impulse to want to kill the ball with every ounce of power in your body. This causes every muscle in your body to contract which causes your fingers to increase their grip on the club ("grabbing") which then prevents a natural release of the club. Here are 2 ways to determine if you are swinging too hard (over accelerating, flashing, grabbing) 1. Put a pencil in your mouth and gently bite down on it and then hit a ball. After you finish the swing check the pencil. No teeth marks means you swung under control and did not over accelerate . Any teeth marks and you need to try again. 2. Keep you mouth open during your swing. If you over accelerate your mouth will not stay open 3. Count out loud while swinging. If you over accelerate the count will speed up or stop . Guess that was 3 ways not 2 :)

@@mav1733 I hope he teaches you golf better than your English teacher taught you how to spell...lol He is not a "teacher". A teacher understands the importance of proper communication and understands the laws of learning. One thing a good teacher never does is use terminology that is not clearly defined and understood by both the communicator and the receiver. " Don't grab" can mean many different things and the term is useless unless clearly defined. As a flight instructor I take teaching seriously. Any ambiguity in my teaching and someone can die, including myself. Great knowledge does not a great teacher make. The ability to communicate that knowledge so a 10 year old can understand it is what makes a great teacher. Pete has more knowledge about golf than I ever will. I never said otherwise. I critiqued his communication skills not his knowledge of the golf swing. Yes he has Henrik on his resume so he is doing something right. I'm saying he can do better.

Wondering the same thing, dbc. I think Cowen's making the point that, when it comes to using the hands anyway, doing less is more. As near as I can tell from his instruction here, he appears to be holding off any "active" movement in the hands & wrists until sometime after they enter the hitting area in the downswing just prior to striking the ball.
@Alopez4711475 жыл бұрын
Cowen's teachings, I believe, are trying to keep you from initiating the hands at the top of the downswing too quickly in effect making you come over the top. What he is suggesting, and you can look up some of his spiral staircase method teachings as well, is that you should initiate the downswing with your left shoulder unwinding around and upward and letting the weight of the club head do its thing with the help of gravity. This allows you to activate your wrists in the proper manner going through the ball (see his axe drill). My personal experience trying this out and finding some success came with the realization the you really need to have "noodle arms" at address and the try to have them fully extended as you go through the ball and extend to the target. Just what has worked for me.

@wx8115 жыл бұрын
@Steady as she goes Agree. To be honest a lot of teachers you see are there to make money, not to help the students. I'm not sure about Pete. I didn't learn the game this way. I don't really know what I'm doing, I just throw it back and smack it, and control curvature. It normally goes exactly where I want. Every iron shot has the exact same sound, and the ball takes off on the same traj on most of my shots. I don't remember the last time I was OB to be honest, maybe once or twice on windy days 2 or 3 months ago. But what Pete describes seems to warrant inconsistency, simply because the info presented is so complicated... As I said, I don't know what I do when I swing. But some of these teachers imo make the game harder than it is. Or maybe it just came easy to me, but for others it may be more difficult....idk
