Pete played on George Harrison's album All Things Must Pass. Time wise, yeah early 60s...he was also really great on regular slide/pedal steel type stuff. This was sort of a special piece, most of his stuff sounded like your regular pedal steel only he was an early master of it.

Drake also famously played the slide line on Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay".

That was cool. It felt like having a martini for lunch and then walking back into the office. Great choice, thoroughly enjoyed it thanks.

So Pete Drake was Peter Frampton before Peter Frampton was Peter Frampton. This was just too cool.

Frampton is a guitar virtuoso. Not a one trick pony.

Man, that’s a time machine clip. Back when you needed a whole band, a group of background singers in another shot, a funky new thingamajig and a girl to play it to. Dig the aerial photography. Waiting for the talk back machine that argues with you on stage. Peace and vintage futuristic Music

That house band was actually pretty solid (if boring but they did what they were supposed to do) and I liked the little touch the piano player would add. I had never heard this before and I am surprised that the talk box first made it' appearance on a country TV show. Cool. Thanks for sharing and thanks to whomever steered you to it.

In the early-to-mid-60s, Top 40 AM radio stations used to buy packages of jingles and commercial bumpers and station I.D.s...I can remember WWUN in Jackson, Mississippi, around 1965-66 had, as their first jingle package, a talking pedal steel guitarist. "Wonderful W-WUN...where the winners are! Whoopee..."

Before Peter Frampton, Pete let Joe Walsh have his old unit which was in his garage. If you want to go back to the forties, see the movie clips of Alvino Rey's talking steel guitar "Stringy", which was manipulated using a throat mic by his wife offstage.

The song came out in '64, so it must have been around at this time.

Peter Frampton played on George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album sessions and learned of the talk box from Pete Drake, who was also playing on the album.

I learned something. I didn't know this talk-box was so old (50'). I thought it was from the start oof the seventies. I first saw it used by Wishbone Ash.

In the late 1930's Alvino Rey was also doing talking guitar - although the mechanism was different.

Very nice choice Justin. When you go exploring, we all find the hidden treasures with you. Great timing also, I just demolished my left thumb and index finger and am looking for a lap-steel guitar to satisfy my playing itch till it heals. Do think Pete ever met Frank Zappa? After all the talk-box is a Mother of an Invention! Peace,.

It's a pedal steel guitar, it has no frets, the frets are painted on the neck, the steel slide is the fret.
