After having rediscovered the charming, "Alias Smith & Jones" (which I didn't watch when it was on first run), I miss Pete Duel's easy manner and likable personality even more. He embodied Hannibal Heyes like no one else ever could. Rest in peace, Peter. Wish we could have reached you when you were alive and told you how much you and your gifts meant to us.

I was riding with my mother from Tennessee to Florida when the news came over the radio. I was about ten and was devastated. I am not a Western fan, but Alias Smith & Jones was not just another Western. It was well written and the plots were intelligent and the characters well developed. Both Duel and Murphy had their roles down to perfection.

Peter's death has always haunted me, from the minute I awoke on December 31, 1972, to this day. Every New Year's Eve, I salute him. In a written interview, brother Geoffrey (who acted with Peter on occasion) called Pete's death an "accidental suicide." God rest the man. He was better than even he knew.

Knowing what happened - all that time ago, it is STILL difficult (for me) to watch…even the opening credits of AS&J, after he passed away, and they brought in Roger Davis. It's something which rarely happens - it's just painful to watch, because one can't watch it - seeing Mr Davis (who through NO FAULT of his) was put there). If anything, the 'blame' is on ABC, who forced AS&J RIGHT back into production - not even a week later, but, the very next day, and this must've been awful on the cast/crew, and it didn't give any time to re-work the series, in any way - they literally just 'stuck' Mr Davis in, and said, 'action'. Mr Duel had that rare gift; he was magnetic, and just watching this, and seeing how choked up his family - and Roger Davis get - is palpable. Terrible loss.

Thank you for putting this vid on here so that we can all see how lovely but troubled Peter was, I know that his brother is obviously still affected and hope that he knows that he couldn't have done anything to stop this tragedy. God keep you safe Peter and family.

...there is absolutely no way to explain how seriously horrible depression is - to those whom never had or will have it - It is not "the blues", "poor me", or even like "a broken heart" - it is so tragically horrible - depression and it is 100% physically a chemical imbalance in the brain and endocrine system - What a tragedy - for him and all whom truly know and feel depression. The manic phases do not provide the hope for the depressive moments - I can't imagine the trauma of that scary rollercoaster - I only know the reoccurring clinical depression and had I have had to deal with it more than the major episodes I've had , I certainly would have likely made a successful departure. Tragic to be without him - likely more tragic to have had to be him - my hear pours out energy of understanding - May he forever have positive soul energy and Peace I now feel a true kinship to this very talented and beautiful man

You are so right--in the past, people would say to those suffering from depression to 'Snap out of it'. I would say in the past 20 yrs that awareness of this illness--as that is what it is--has gotten SO much better. In Peter's time there was less awareness/understanding, less therapy. He also did not help his situation by drinking which makes depression worse. Also, for a H'wood actor to admit that would jettison one's career--tough business. We live in better times--a lot less suffereing with better meds/therapy/support groups.

Yes, people take it much more seriously today. I can tell, the way his sister talked, that she had no idea what to do. Nowadays, they'd do an involuntary commitment if they had to for at least 3 days. And they wouldn't worry as much about deadlines for the series. They'd just replace him for a few shows and give him time to heal and get his meds straightened out. People would be much more supportive of him. I suffer from depression, too, so I know what it's like. It can be truly unbearable at times.

Roger Davis reaction of Petes death shows how devastatingly the impact of Suicide is. It made Me well up with Tears. Reminds Me of Me Like many who loved him that pain is hard to handle. Its only taken Me 21 Years to have a Picture of my Brother who took his life years ago. Within that 21 Years I could not remember the Good Times with him. Not 1 Single Good Memory. I have only Now forgiven my Brother for doing what he did. Since then (only 2 Years) All the Funny Memories have come back. God Bless his Loved Ones n Friends he left behind with Healing💛

There is so much missing from this story. How he was in a car wreck in winter and cut his so tongue so badly and the motor cycle accident where he thought he was going to die, the horrible gash that was in his leg. He had two friends from college , one worked at NBC and they were going to start a production company. What happened to that? He even called his wake up service to wake him up in the morning the day he passed away. Why would he do that if he had planned to leave us behind. I have read that he had a psychiatrist. He was on medication for epilepsy caused by the motorcycle accident. Peter will always be a mystery. My 15 year old heart has never healed from this tragic death. Love you always Peter.

One thought about the wake up call: he likely didn't know his gf was coming over and wanted his body found the next day. Also, it was clearly an impulsive act after an intense argument with his gf and the wake up was made before the argument or maybe even before she came over. The police would have had that information which is another reason foul play was never a suspicion. Clearly, he'd been having suicidal ideations for a long time. He was a beautiful, talented man. RIP, Peter.

Nice thought, but you couldnt have stopped him, nothing you could have said , or done, would have prevented his death. People dont understand Petes feelings of how he wanted his life to mean something. All the ills of the world were upon his shoulders, and he could do absolutely nothing about it. He saw all the frivalousness of everything? He was unable to change the world. What a weight for his soul to bear!! No one can understand that, unless you yourself have felt that way. Thats why he started drinking, to push those feelings of inadequacy down, and cover them up. Which then was a spiral downward into the abyss which then became full blown , alcoholisium. Its so sad because he had such promise, and people looked at him as a guy whom they thought had everything, talent , money, cars, friends, clothes, good looks, he had it all. & still none of that, brought him real true happiness. Because those things cant, and Peter deep down, in his soul, knew that. He knew that nothing he ever did, or could do, would ever change that. He had no hope ! And without hope. Who are any of us ? But by the Grace of God , go I RIP Peter

Well, they had very similar facial features. The major difference between them is in their eyes: Pete's eyes were very wide-set, while Geoffrey's eyes are much closer together. That said, occasionally, when I see Geoff in some TV show, it's not difficult to mistake him for Pete. Their voices sounded almost identical, which adds to it all.

I know what it must have felt like to be him. The fact his behaviour on the set, even after a night of drinking, was described as being "manic", rang a bell with me, as I am bipolar and have been fighting the bottle too. It makes me sad that mental illness, like manic depression, was a taboo, almost shameful subject in that era. After hearing about his concern for social justice, I can relate. It is more than anyone can ask of someone to carry the world's pain on their shoulders. Unfortunately, that is a side effect of our illness. Our curse is feeling too much, feeling too much, loving too much. I admire him for being who he was. The only difference between him and I is that I never give up. I still have fightback. Rest easy now Pete - You were a beautiful, sensitive man who never realised his worth and how beautiful your soul is xx Heni

+Mippyification Your comment both touched me & moved me enough to reply. You are so correct in saying that, in the end, he gave up. I have seen first hand how, if left untreated, the effects of the combination of manic depression and alcoholism can eat away at a person's soul. Furthermore, I've seen how much it affects the people who are closest to the sufferer and how it literally tears them apart inside. Sadly, to the sufferer, it is like a private battle because, unless they confide in someone they trust, everyone who interacts with them will often be clueless as to what is going on. Like most bad habits, when an individual finally takes their first step toward recovery, the level of strength or fire power that lies behind their fight to take back their life wholly depends on the individual himself. Those who support them need to be honest in saying that it will be the hardest fight of their life but, in the same breath, remind them that the reward will be the greatest event of their life. Congratulations on your recovery. You're a truly strong person and I will remember you in my prayers. Take care. Yours Truly from Phoenix, Marie.

He probably had Bi Polar disease and the alcoholism exasarbated it. I remember him and I had a mad crush on him. He was a great actor. I LOVED Love on a Rooftop and Alias Smith and Jones. I cried so when he died. Such a talent who was tormented by his demons.

That's what I was going to say. I think he was bipolar before we knew what that was. My niece is bipolar and sometimes she is very sweet and the next time she'll bite your head off over something trivial. She can read you all the taboo subjects that she doesn't want to discuss before you have a conversation with her. Usually the taboo subject was my deceased sister, her mother. She hated her. Other times she loved her and would discuss anything with you.

In NC, I dated one kinda chubby gal out of 2 girls back in 1972. They were both obsessed with Alias Smith and Jones. If I had known he was already dead by the time I met her I would have waited and rubbed this story in her face and make her mad so it would be easier to get rid of her sooner instead of waiting until December 1972. LOL

So sad to watch. I love AS&J & Pete, but watching all the cast & friends taking their time to talk about him was a good thing to see. Of course people are always going to question Ben Murphy about Pete, he was the closedt person to him & probably knew him very well & worked with him all day every day. He's the one person everybody wants to hear from the most. He doesn't usually talk about it (don't know why), so this was good to see.

There are a lot of similarities between his death and that of George Reeves. Both suicides, apparently, both with friends in another part of the house, both drinking and the shot coming completely out of the blue.... I am surprised that brother Geoffrey did not appear in this episode, supposedly he doesn't buy the suicide theory. Lots of oddness about this case. Good episode.
@hgwpatroll
@hgwpatroll 9 жыл бұрын
***** In the Reeves case there were multiple bullet holes in the bedroom, at least 3 and as many as 5. Alcohol also seems to be a factor, as Reeves' bac was .27 and Duel's was .31. It seems LAPD did a somewhat more competent investigation in the Duel case.

***** Curious. What kind of questions? What kinda oddness? I know in Reeves case he had been involved and spurned a woman who was involved some what with the mob. At least that's what I remember. Is there some question with Pete? Really, I don't know much about Pete Duel's death.

larry potter Both guys at home. Both drinking, but in both cases the drinking seemed to be incidental. Both deaths late at night. Both with their girlfriend in the other room, close enough to hear but not with them. Both visited with their girlfriend, then went to bed alone. Both pulled out a gun for no known reason. Neither seemed depressed and had no reason to be depressed (despite Lemmon's later claims). Both in fact were in the midst of career resurgences. Neither girlfriend really investigated. Both had no particular known love of guns, yet just up and whipped one out with no suicide note, and without telling anyone why. No real motive in either case, they "just happened." The nearby presence of the girlfriend basically squelched any real investigation based on her account. Just too many coincidences. When you compare the two cases, it appears to be the same M O. Mob hits? If that was their style, it sure worked both times. Reeves had very close ties to the mob, the multiple bullet holes at his scene (and shell casing underneath his body) make no sense to anyone (maybe a brief struggle?). Less is known about Duel, but then, frankly, he was not as big a star. Pete's brother is quite suspicious. Let's posit a theory. Someone wanted both guys dead. You place a girlfriend, or threaten the current one, or whatever. Then she can let someone in and do the cover story. You force the guy to drink (really, those guys were way too drunk, if you know what I mean). That makes it look like they both just got too drunk and then made a mistake. It's all meticulously planned out and executed, plenty of time for the hit men to leave and the girlfriend to compose herself and call the cops (Lemmon in particular waited almost an hour and tampered with evidence). Just hypothesizing.

***** I didn't know that George had a high content of alcohol in his bloodstream. That is interesting indeed. And you're right. How did Pete have that much liquor in his system with out passing out. I think I understand your suspicions now. I thought Pete was alone when he died, I didn't know that his girlfriend was in the other room. I just looked it up, and what you're saying is true. Just like George Reeves, Pete said goodnight to his girlfriend, Dianne Ray, and she later heard a gunshot, went into his room and discovered his body, as the story goes. Interesting, VERY interesting, Now you got me wondering.

+Lesa Shusta I believe the legal limit is .8 as well. So if he was .31, like they said, he was well below the legal limit i.e. not drunk. That's why it must be a mistake. Three times the legal limit would be 2.4 (which would be quite drunk, so that makes sense)

I was talking to my wife tonight about how I thought he must have been Bi Polar or really depressed because it just did not make sense. This was a horrible tragedy. I often wish he had not done that terrible thing and I would have had a bunch of S&J Episodes. I now watch the Season 1 and part of 2 till he kills himself and then Roger Davis just is not the same in the show. He's a great actor but I am missing Pete and it's not the same without him. I feel sad like him at times but I'm no actor.
