After hearing Pete on The Beatles Anthology I’m only surprised they didn’t fire him sooner.

Pete was one of several who were with the group before their recording career started. Another drummer before Pete was Tommy Moore. Stuart Sutcliffe was on bass before Paul.

In 1964, anything connected with the Beatles was gold dust. So why didn't a professional band hire an ex Beatle as their drummer? Because Pete Best simply wasn't good enough.

Pete Best was in another band soon thereafter. But that band was simply not going places.

I was disappointed with The Beatles' "Anthology" because they didn't interview Pete. They had everybody else, and their mother, but I think a bit of an interview with Pete would have been important.

Session drummer Andrew White played on "Love me do " as George Martin didn't think Ringo was good enough.

The album version was with White, the single was Ringo.

Had Pete Best been more honest about his association, and cited himself as being passable for gigs but himself acknowledging that he might not have been up to scratch for recording and studio sessions, instead of hacking along on the presumption that he was indefinitely a fixture in the band, then he might have fared better and not presented himself as the all-time strike out. Then he compounds it by going on telly with his mom moaning about being sacked.

Pete was fired and never hit the big time with the band ,but he will always have a place in Beatles history.

I've always felt a bit bad about the excuse that Pete was a 'bad' drummer. He was decent enough. But at the end of the day a band is a collaboration, and in any collaboration the interpersonal is key. Ringo was wonderful interpersonal glue that held the other three personalities together throughout the stresses of Beatlemania. Pete couldn't have filled that role, and the band would have fractured rather than soared. Pete did finally got his due for his contributions during the early days when Anthology I was published: the number I have seen is royalties of 9 million1995 US$. Me myself, I count that a happy ending.

I think Brian made a mistake by telling Pete, “The Boys want you out and Ringo in. The boys and George Martin don’t think you’re a good enough drummer.” Not good. He shouldn’t have mentioned “The boys” at all. Brian could have told Pete without mentioning any names, but if he had to it should have been George Martin’s. I can’t imagine the hurt Pete felt, esp from his bandmates. After all, the Beatles were close to Pete and that had to hurt most. The first major mistake Brian made.
