❤ I had the pleasure of Pete & Andre hold a gate open for me in 91/92 @Indian Wells ! 😮 Was working as Meeting Planner at Renaissance, they were practicing on our back courts ! Andre was rude to the Bellmen & Valet's w/ his Ferrari, so I could only see THE PETE...😊 As a Manager/Employee, cannot get too excited..so, checked out his beautiful legs and said, 'Thank you Pete Sampras 😍 ' Doubt they remember. But that's my Pete/Andre story..Andre was shorter and following Pete after me...😂

Unfortunately there was a gap in the mid-90’s when Andrea wasn’t consistently healthy and Pete had no true competition. Outside of Paris and Melbourne, Pete’s dominanted those years with little resistance. Wasn’t the best of times for the game. Too bad the big 4 weren’t about 5 or 6 years sooner - that would have been something!!! 😮

He usually says: I love to teach you alone (usually 2 or 3 on the training sessions) cause we can make an inteire session of approaches and volleys. Dullards (lots of them here) who think the volley was a misfit or “lucky” only show how little they know about high level tennis. That’s an improvised side spin drop volley as he was jammed by a direct drive from Andre. No luck at all… it’s talent and great hands. Andre knows it. Pete knows it. Anyone who’s played at a decent level knows it. As courier once said of Sampras after being beaten down in a big match in the early 90’s: he can reach for a volley that nobody can reach and hit a perfect drop volley out of it, he can make shots the rest of us wouldn’t even try.
@Rauliki_U_u20 күн бұрын
Totally true, that last volley was a totally improvised but intentional shot, the ball did exactly what Pete, in a matter of thousandths, previewed in his mind. Many people think that Pete only put the racquet on with no other intention than to just remove the ball from his body and continue putting the ball into play because the execution was visually spectacular, but definitely despite the spectacularity that the shot required, Pete executed it with great mastery and with all the mischief in the world. I was always surprised by how feline Pete was at the net and his mental speed to take impossible shots.

I did not consider Pete Sampras an athletic man from the outward appearance. He seems to lumber around and have a hunch back or something like that. But for him to be able to keep up so often with Agassi in baseline rallies, and get to the net means he has to be an athlete: he has to be agile, fast, good reaction time, good, coordination, etc. Great point. I would be so frustrated as Agassiz thinking to myself, “what do I have to do to win a point on this guy”

@reuireuiop011 ай бұрын
Tennis has changed very much over the years, power and condition having taken over from pure technical class. Sampras was a Forerunner of todays power play, while Borg McEnroe Connors were at the pivot point when power became important. Taking the great advantage of today's training methods in the account, I do wonder if any of today's big 3 would have stood a chance had they grown up to play tennis against the likes of Rosewall, Newcomb, Laver. Sure the big 3 have technical skills like any. But if they didn't have the 2000s physical, but the body like it was back then, I wonder how they would get on. Can't get back in time, so the issue is theoretical. But I'm not a believer of all them GOAT claims. I'm not convinced todays sport heroes would have done as well in old times, when the training and all surroundings weren't as full-professional as today when even snacks and shoe strings are scientifically researched. (Only now i read your last line, which agrees with my first point 😁
