best double hander EVER if you ask me. No one else to this day hits it the way he does. The technique is very different from "the ATP backhand". If you look at frozen snapshots of his backhand and compare it to any other player..... you'll see.

@@OldSkoolLegend It's definitely one of the greatest two handed backhands of all time. Arguably the greatest. I personally think Nalbandian's or Djokovic's is the greatest double-hander of all time. Nalbandian's effortless ballstriking is his unique talent. The angle, depth (at the opponent's feet or deep in the baseline) and the spin he creates so easily are just ridiculous. While Nalbandian's backhand may not have so much power or pace, he can seriously toy with his opponents by using that shot. As for Djokovic's backhand, we all know that it's definitely the most error-free shot in tennis. And I think Djokovic's backhand is the best down-the-line backhand ever, at least with the double-handers. The greatest strength with Djokovic's backhand is that no one can break it down, which is ridiculous because players often target their opponents' backhands for short balls or point construction. The sliding backhand he hits is a perfect example. Agassi's backhand is perhaps the second best double-hander of all time in my opinion. He can hit it earlier than anyone else, forehand or backhand, and the cross-court flat shot he hits is probably the best in the business, either for a winner or for a short ball. Plus he's one of the most gifted ballstrikers in tennis history. I think that Djokovic is the better returner than Agassi on the backhand side overall (and perhaps forehand also), but Agassi's backhand returns were flatter and took his serving opponents by surprise.

It's a shame because Tennis TV are the only ones on Earth who have the rights to share these matches and the only ones who can find these matches on high quality and they didn't share with their community more than 9 minutes on many former matches highlights. It's a miracle when highlights or extended highlights last more than 15 minutes. As a tennis fan I'm just frustrated.

A truly great rivalry with a lot of respect shown between the two players. Sampras dominated the first part of the rivalry and by this point, Agassi was dominating. Agassi was at his peak while Sampras was slowly declining. Agassi would be the last American to win at Indian Wells until Taylor Fritz in 2022.

Gilbert was a capable and crafty coach who helped Andre a lot, but I think fans underestimate how much fitness plays a role, and Andre's fitness coach was more likely the best thing that ever happened to Andre's career.

He had good results with Nick Bollettieri too but wasn't disciplined ultimately so maybe Gilbert helped him focus on fitness and be more disciplined in general.

I think the issue for Agassi was more mental. It took him a long time to figure himself out.

Agassi had a modern racquet and strings. It was Pete who had the older tech and didn’t adopt the newer options until it was more or less too late. And modern courts being a bit slower may have helped Andre but it would have also helped his competitors. You would have seen former clay court specialist lasting far longer in hard court tournaments.

Sampras hit the ball so hard that I think people forgot how he got his name. Pistol Pete!!! He hit the ball harder then Federer and Novak. Also his forehand was no joke he could hit rockets off that side and his backhand was a wall. His serve probably the best in the whole game and his volleyer made him a wall at the net.

He did not hit harder than Federer or Djokovic, at least from ground strokes. Sampras would be eaten alive from the ground by any modern baseline player. He has inefficient technique and not nearly enough top spin. One other modern element that I've noticed among top players is that they all slide on hard courts when pushed to the edges of the court. I think Djokovic was one of the first to start this but just about everyone does it now. The shoe technology may not have been available to even make that possible in the Agassi Sampras era. Either way, I think that's one of the factors in the longer rallies today because it allows for more defensive and offensive plays against shots that would have otherwise been winners.

That's because Sampras was relatively poor from the back of the court, compared to others TOP 10 players. His backhand was loopy nd his shoulder size forehand was meh, he also lacked creativity.

Sampras's style was all out rushing the net/just flat out hitting unreturnable serves. Neither of those make for good highlights (though they would make sense in a much longer recap). Plus they try to highlight breaks and set points, which only Agassi got.
