His granddaughter went to my elementary school in the early 90s. He used to sing to my class when I was in kindergarten, and the first time I saw him he was painting the school's porch. Always a real one. The Clearwater project alone, makes him one of the coolest human beings in all of American history.

About 20 years ago on the Hudson river in NY, I took a 4th grade field trip on a boat ride. Me and my classmates, about 20 of us. We ended up getting stuck on a sandbar and we needed to get plucked off this sail boat by the coastguard. So they decided the best way to keep 20, 8 year olds entertained, while we waited, was to play us some songs on a guitar. We all ended up piling into the cabin and listened to some guy play his guitar. Well that boat was the 'Clearwater' and i didn't appreciate it then, but i found out later that that guy playing his guitar was Pete Seeger. I still remember being bored lol, and thinking the songs he was playing sucked, I'd like to relive that experience now that i have a little more taste, but i'll never forget my dads reaction, in the car ride home. After i told him someone played us music, his jaw dropped and he just started laughing and said "that 'guy' playing stupid songs was Pete Seeger". I had no idea who he was lol, and it took a few more years for me to appreciate the experience he gave me but I'll certainly never forget it, thanks Pete R.I.P.

Dylan Thibault Love this story Dylan. I play guitar and was playing at a nursing home in northern New York State and a nurse there said to me, "Hey, you remind me of my old neighbor." She told me about this neighbor who used to stop when she was hitching a ride to town and scold her for doing such a thing... then he'd give her a ride to town. Yes, her neighbor was Pete Seeger. I never got to see him in person, but I sing his songs. I also got a bit of a tear reading your story, thanks.

I feel the same and I feel obligated to share his music. I'm a history teacher and his music is part of my curriculum. about 8 years ago, while teaching about the Civil Rights Movement, a student came in and told me that she had discussed "We Shall Overcome" with her father. Her father knew about Pete's activism and they had a nice discussion about it and listened to some more music together.

I got to see him with some other performers years ago (mostly new people, Pete was like that about promoting new talent). He was at the point that he couldn't sing anymore, but he led the audience in a rousing version of "So Long, It's Been Good to Know You", and the warmth and kindness that came from him was so strong that it didn't matter. We were there, and so was he, and it was awesome.

Those before me, on this blog, Pete Seeger to us, will be missed....and I was only a very young lad in the 50's hearing his songs played on the radio, didn't know who he was then, but I loved his music (Well my analogy is-you can hear a bird whistle a beautiful tune-you just didn't see it or know what breed it was-but you loved the sound it made, it was still beautiful). You can understand why all those folk singers in latter years were influenced by him..Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Burl Ives (well he was around a long time too - then I loved Burl's singing too)..the list is endless....the reason they loved him...the lyrics Seeger wrote were true to himself...because he lived the life before he wrote them. Now, that, folks, IS folk singing. Vale Pete Seeger May 3, 1919 - January 27, 2014 - you WILL be missed by all of we folk music lovers. Very sad day it is.
