This album and movie has always meant so so so much to me- the music has always been so emotional and evoking and the story, although wrapped up in the a parka and conveyed on a scooter, is essentially the struggle every teenager goes through. I dont know how I'd have made it to 18, as I have now, without this album and film. The prospect of this new album, at first scared me because of my attachment, however after this video, and hearing Alfie Boe's vocals doing it so much justice I cannot wait!!!! Fantastic

I have been a huge WHO fan since their earliest days. I have seen them many times in concert. I am very protective of their music and the band itself. They were an amazing band and Roger Daltrey was not only incredibly sexy but his voice was one of the best in Rock History! But like everyone and everything time passes and we all grow old. To be perfectly honest when I saw them perform recently, I just felt sad. Daltrey was just not Daltrey anymore. I was very skeptical of listening to ANYONE sing any of their songs. But I have to say that Alfie Boe's version of this classic Who song is exceptional. He did a fantastic job. He has an amazing voice. Was his version as good as Roger's back in the day? Of course not. But Alfie Boe is not a Rock star. He is primarily an opera star of enormous talent and distinction. I love his version of this song. He was strong and powerful! Good job Mr. Boe. I will listen to this many times. Roger, I will always love you. Thank you for the incredible memories!

Probably no one is reading this at this point but here's my two cents: I’ve been trying to figure out why some people can’t accept another singer and why some are so vehement that others should “open their minds”. Probably like most people, I listened to this album when I was in my teens, I was in love with all things British. I remember being in my room and drawing and listening to this on headphones night after night. The stuff you hear in your teens really leaves an imprint and it’s hard to “substitute” those musical experiences with anything other than the version that affected you. I think that’s why most people can’t get beyond the Roger version. But also, when I hear this guy singing, maybe it’s the visual, but I feel like he is singing as a narrator, an older guy who is singing about his past, but when Roger sings it, he sounds like Jimmy “in the moment”. Roger is not a “perfect” singer, his voice is raw and sometimes it cracks even, and that’s exactly what makes him sound so passionate. He doesn’t have the same range as the other guy but he sure has texture and nuance in his singing and really knows how to convey emotion. The other thing is, I tend to see Roger as having been “a street kid” and it just makes the character’s voice more believable. I think the classical version of Quad is something that Pete Townshend was always hoping for people to hear in order to recognize the caliber of his compositions. Mr. Boe is really good in the operatic version and it is an interesting concept, still if I were to watch this live, I would listen in a more detached manner and just focus on the storyline and the brilliance of the music as opposed to getting involved with the character. For me it's Rog.

The naked, fearless, intense passion in Roger Daltry's cries is simply not present here. As much of an advocate for classical music as I am, all it's polish & buttoned down discipline; Rock & roll has the freedom to run the razors edge between complete cacophony & transcendent brilliance. When Daltry roars the chorus, you feel the power of that tragic, desperate emotion. This talented, but stiff & passionless singer, is nailing the notes; and that is all.

Been a WHO fan for many years, seem em many times - first at Pontiac '75. Just because I am getting older (as we all are) doesn't necessarily mean I suddenly need to change my taste from constant beating of the drums, the incessant gut shaking basslines, and massive guitar - like Live at Leeds for example. So I am not really amped for this new classic project, altho I will give it a chance. I am indifferent to new Who projects because The Who were GODS to me in the 70's - the BEST live band hands down, the loudest act, the bass bass player and drummer in the world, great guitarist performing while leaping all over, fantastic singer, great lyrics. I want that back, but I can't have it. Will Classic Quadrophenia live result in raised fists and knowing grins? I don't know. I wouldn't bet on it.

Even having never seen the film I still got chills when Jimmy the Mod himself cropped up at the end. Whether it's actually him or merely a ghost, it's almost like a nod to the original rock opera's ambiguous ending. Mr. Boe's a living gem, and Pete's music has been given a respectable rendition from his partner in crime. Love this.

Dylan Cuesta I nearly split the sides of my mouth grinning when Phil Daniels popped up at the end :) I've been watching him in a hilarious mostly forgotten series called "Time Gentlemen, Please!". And I don't think the ending of Quadrophenia is ambiguous. (SPOILER ALERT BELOW!) - - - - - - Only the motorcycle goes over the cliff and if you blink, you'll miss Jimmy standing there. I think trashing the bike was his washing his hands of "the mods" and he is standing there where the story began.
@Lanooski9 жыл бұрын
Dylan Cuesta Ladies and germs, I've now seen the film. It is an extraordinary picture. The changes made from the album give it more coherency (the first shot is, according to the filmmakers, the last scene chronologically, so there is no doubt Jimmy would have lived to the point of this video). Can't wait to watch it again. One of my new favorites.

I really enjoyed this (though I miss the driving drums) and look forward to the entire Orchestral treatment of Quadrophenia. This performance illustrates three points clearly: 1) How brilliant The Who were as a band of musicians; 2) How great Pete Townshend is as a song writer (he should be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of fame himself); 3) How amazing Roger is as a singer.

People keep talking about how this ruined the original Who version, and how the original is so much better with its harder rock sound, crashing drums and Roger Daltrey screaming those notes out with emotion... but... really think about what Quadrophenia is. It is a rock opera. Pete Townshend all but created the genre himself, as a way to tell a story through an album. This album was his second full rock opera, followed by Tommy. The origins of this style of music is in the name of the genre itself. Rock OPERA. This version of the song just removes the rock part to make it more of a traditional opera song. In this case, the lack of drums and guitars and such is not only necessary, but replaced fittingly with an orchestra. Alfie Boe has a voice that fits the accompaniment very well. This doesn't ruin what has existed for 45 years , its just a different interpretation. Oh, I forgot to mention this version and the entire album this song is from was because Pete Townshend (the guy who in fact created Quadrophenia 45 years ago) wanted this version. I'm not telling anybody to like it or hate it or anything, but just calm the hell down. Its not like they tried to remake this as a hip hop song, or a disco song or something. The style genuinely fits the original lyrics and composition.
