I listened to this song in 1965 when I lived in Germany. I was young and in love and I would listen to this song over and over and think of her. Wishing I was with her. Of course Dylan was the singer on the original record. I have to say that Pete Townsend has done the best interpretation I have ever heard. And, I have to admit my mind travels back to those lonely nights while I listen to Pete.

The "eerie bits" about the fall out puts the other lines into perspective. The description of the cold and winter now refer to Nuclear Winter His fixation about her red hair now suggests that it fell out due to radiation sickness Even the bit about her doing laundry by hand now implies that her home regressed to a pre-Industrial society. Even him revealing that he can't get to her could refer to that he is in another shelter dying and is making his final wishes known to someone else.
