Something I really love about this episode, and this era of Doctor Who, is the message that the lives of ordinary people do matter. Pete Tyler was a man who was almost a complete failure his whole life, but that life still mattered enough that time was falling apart because his death was prevented. A lot of us feel like we could vanish and the world wouldn't change, but time says otherwise

Oh, such a good insight. Rose questioned if him being alive would even make a difference since he likely wouldn't become a leader or something associated with "big." Apparently, the lives of every person, seemingly small and insignificant, imperfect, etc., do matter. For Rose, it's her whole world. Pete might have originally died feeling like his life didn't matter, but this time, he knew that he could have made a big difference in his family's life if he had been around and tried to live up to those ideals. He clearly had the capacity when the choice was presented before him. It really leaves and impact on me, a desire to do better and believe my life does matter, so do something good with it.

Wrong. He was important, because it led to the Rose's timeline and Rose is important. Planet is full of useless people and the Doctor casually alters the timeline without giving a two fucks about them.

@@archilarkania7203 yep the doctor even says this in turn left when donna escapes the time beetle, something like 'normally the universe would compensate around it but you created a whole parallel world'

@archilarkania7203 wrong, you completely misinterpreted the point the commenter was making, this era had an overarching message that everyone matters, the doctor even Says it In this episode to the people getting married, they are important. It doesn't mean you are massively important in relation to the entire universe but that nobody is " useless".

He *still* is. Especially his parallel Earth counterpart; even though Rose wasn't *his* daughter, since he and his Jackie never got together, Pete went back and saved Rose from the Void, like she was his own.

I really appreciate this moment more as I rewatch this episode. It's not just a heroic sacrifice, it's Pete living up to and justifying the idealized picture of himself that Rose grew up with. He says earlier in the episode, in so many words, that he wouldn't really be a good dad, but after this moment who's to say he wouldn't have always been capable of stepping up in ways that he or Jackie never figured?

Mummy on the orient express was an episode i really enjoyed. Clara is a great character and i thought Missy was pretty well done too but I feel the newer seasons lack real emotion maybe its that im older now but the old episodes are still great to me and i'd say they were cosistently better written. Peter Capaldi does play the part really well though, like he's doing the best he can but the script lets him down.

My Dad passed away yesterday afternoon, and I felt like I needed to watch this scene back. He was bi-polar, and tried to take his life twice. Once at the age of 49 and again at the age of 59. He was saved by the hard-working NHS staff. Sepsis took him in the end. He went peacefully at the age of 62, I cherish the fact I got all of those extra years with him in the same way Rose got those extra hours with her dad in this scene. He was my hero and I love him so much. He deserved a longer life and I wish I’d been a better son to him. 💔

One thing I didn't notice as a kid but I notice as an adult - the little shake in Pete's voice, the wet sheen in his eyes - this isn't like the Hollywood-standard heroic sacrifice where the martyr is fully at peace with what they're about to do. On rthe contrary, Pete is TERRIFIED knowing that he's about to die, but he's going to do it anyway. Masterful acting on Shaun Dingwall's part.

@Noah Redding You do you, I prefer the RTD era, it's more In line with my preferred style of Doctor Who. Though Moffat wrote some of the most creative episodes of that era, I think he excels at writing one shot stories, his series arcs are convoluted and boring. That being said I think RTD's problem is that he also didn't play to his strengths, some of his episodes are tonally schizophrenic, and as you mentioned he undercut the drama by building up gigantic stakes and resolving them in a matter of minutes.

Just as the car shows up on the very loop where it finally kills Pete, you hear the music go to a sort of hopeful place where it signifies that what is about to happen is what needs to happen for everything to be fixed. Even Pete dying was the "right thing"; the first time it actually happened it was a tragedy, but the second time it happens, it is something that HAS to happen because it has always happened ever since that first time and it has since become a part of the immutable space-time fabric. Pete lived, helped in creating Rose and then died, but his existence, even as it ended, had meaning and was hardcoded into the very history of the universe. Sort of like a signature "Pete was here"; he left too soon, but the impact of this seemingly worthless nobody sent ripples through time and changed the universe.

When I was a teenager, I identified with Rose, as if these were my parents. I watched it now over 15 years later, showing my wife Doctor Who for the first time. Now I identify with Pete, especially since we are now trying to have a child. I feel like the most unworthy, imperfect human being, and I don't exaggerate. I have my own weaknesses, serious mistakes i am still trying to fix, and more, but this episode just tore my heart to pieces. If I knew one day I could see my own child, idolizing me... it makes me want to be a better man, husband, and father. The raw emotion of these scene is so perfect. I wouldn't change anything. This episode was supposed to be no more than a season filler and I think this was the best episode of the series. For once the Doctor was absolutely powerless and the fate of the universe was in the hands of an ordinary man. Not a powerful or influential man, he’s just a common man (enter Dusty Rhodes theme in my head lol)

This scene never fails to mess me up. But I always hated the fact that his death went from 'he was hit because of a mistake' to 'he ran out of the church and into the road for no apparent reason'. At least someone was there with him the second time around.

Wise and all-knowing Doctor Who KZbin channel, explain to me this: If the Reapers came because "a man was alive when he shouldn't be", then shouldn't Caecillius being saved by Ten also summon Reapers? And also, literally every single other time the Doctor altered the past to save a life? Why are the Reapers never brought up again?
@sheevpalpatine1741
@sheevpalpatine1741 7 жыл бұрын
I would guess that the reaper only came because pete had to resolve the paradox but Caecilius's life was over he would die and nothing would be left to resolve, with pete he still had to be seen dead.

BurningRabbit72 Ah, that. You see, the fixed point in time... paradoxes.... time can be rewritten... It's all wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff. You kinda just learn to accept it.

I'm 2 years late but I think I know the answer! Pete was saved by his future daughter in front of a past version of herself creating a paradox. So it isn't saving the man that caused them it was the paradox, this is further supported by the reaper appearing when rose touched her baby self. For some reason the car was put in a loop as time tried to fix itself, this is how the reapers got in (I think),when Pete got hit he broke that loop closing whatever the reapers was using. When the Doctor saved Caecillius he didn't create a paradox so no reapers. The other times (I assume) are written as if the doctor was there, like in the aliens in London one he knew the lady was going to be prime minster but she only became it because he stopped the aliens. OR don't create paradoxes. OR don't have some form of connection with the doctor and his companion. That's my theory on all this.

I’m very late to this but I think it was Vesuvius exploding being the fixed point, not all the deaths.

I think that it's because the Doctor saving Caecillius was always supposed to happen as opposed to the Doctor rewriting history. In the Waters of Mars, the Doctor talks about how what he does "makes it happen" with regard to Pompeii. Additionally, I believe it is suggested in the episode that prior to Caecillius being saved, they never had a word for "volcano" making Caecillius and his family the ones who tell the story of Pompeii and define volcano as a concept for all of humanity.
