We returned to Costa Rica last year (June 2019) after being away for a year! Our first stop was at "The Ark" Herb Farm and Botanical Gardens. Owner and Founder, Tommy Thomas gave us a tour of this amazing and beautiful site. The Ark is Costa Rica's largest botanical garden and their mission is to create a space of reflection open to all people and to promote the education, conservation correct use of plants. We had the pleasure of sampling some exotic fruit with our guide and new friend, Daniel Batalla and reunited with our friend, Paul Zink. This is Part 1 of 2 videos we made at "The Ark", so stay tuned for the next part!

you guys will be wonderful grandpas lol..... deeply knowledgeable about nature, i am also buying a few acres of land in El Salvador this year and start a new journey in life. I grew up there but for the past few years I've been working in Asia and only then you realize how devastating it is for many human beings living in concrete jungles.

We have a variety of silverberries (autumn olives) that grow wild in northern Arkansas. I have made wine with a combination of them and wild opossum grapes. I have to say it was the best wine I have ever made. I am so jealous of all the fruit tasting, as I am a forager. This would be the closest to heaven for me.

The Salvia use to be legal in Texas a few years back. It's some crazy stuff. For some reason, I would always go to smurf land. All the rainbow colors and giant mushrooms. It was definitely a trip for 10 or 15 minutes. I was surprised to not see any Papaver Somniferum in the sacred garden. If I had the resources of this old man I'd have hectares full of it.

That's amazing, all the different things he grows. I didn't know the comfrey would break the clay soil down either, it looks like he really has a ton of it, I'll have to try to work it into the garden areas and see what that will do. The Russian Bocking 14 comfrey will nearly make it all the way through the winter here without going dormant. Thanks Pete that was that was great,I learned something. I hope you really enjoy your trip down there, I know you really like it down there.

Elaeagnus is extremely common when I grew up and is a terrible nuisance for landscaping if not kept in check. the ripe fruits are quite tasty but not worth harvesting because of pit to meat ratio, you get NOTHING from them but a taste. they are nice to grab a handful when mowing the lawn though.

Eleagnus Pungens isn't it also the longan berry ? Native to Florida has a two toned leaf glossy green on top and copper color on bottom . Also a varigated variety grown for ornamental landscape in FLA. I was a wholesale grower And landscape contractor in east central fla on Merritt Island a very unique area in FLA South Merritt Island is between the Indian and Banana rivers and is the only tropical land in central fla growing conditions are only comparable in South Fla and Key West !

Is that comfrey around the base of all the fruit trees? Is there a purpose for it?
@DiscoveryDuo
@DiscoveryDuo 4 жыл бұрын
Comfrey is a great support species, and dynamic nutrient accumulator. It is a highly nutritive chop & drop. Mines nutrients in the soil and makes them bioavailable for surrounding plants. As Tommy mentioned, it helps break down the clay soil, and it also shades the soil at the base of trees. Also a wonderful medicinal plant!
