iMac users beware! Bought this monitor this week as a dual iMac Pro and PC monitor, and discovered to my dismay that the Dell Display Manager KVM software does not support iMacs! While the iMac connectivity works fine via the thunderbolt cable, I wanted to be able to use keyboard shortcuts instead of the rear buttons to switch between computers, but Dell's KVM software refused to install on an iMac. After pounding the desk for awhile, I found-in teeny print at the end of the Display Manager manual-that oops iMacs are not officially supported! Huge disappointment for an $1800 monitor to not support this functionality for a whole class of Macs (many still in production BTW), and shame on Dell for not being up-front about this (they simply say "and it works for Mac!"). As a workaround, the 3rd-party utility BetterDisplay enables this functionality so I eventually got shortcuts working as desired. Overall I'm happy with the quality of the hardware, but come on Dell, why limit the software functionality?!

Thanks for great review. I just have a general question for these ultra wide monitors which none of the review videos seem to mention. What happens if you share your screen during a Microsoft Teams call? Does it compress the <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1269">21:9</a> ratio to a <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="969">16:9</a> ratio or it is managed cleverly?
@mikesk8sАй бұрын
I use the 38" version of this monitor for work. MS Teams will deliver the full resolution of whatever you share. On the recipient end, Teams will scale down and letterbox or pillarbox the image if the aspect ratio doesn't match what you are sending. I find that most other users are on smaller 1080p laptop or desktop monitors and if I share my whole screen, they get way more pixels than could possibly resolve. Therefore, I only ever share single application windows, which I size approximately to 1920x1080, since that's likely the target resolution of the rest of the call participants.

Thanks for the review, Pete! Received it recently and thinking about keeping it. I wonder, what scaling option do you use in Mac OS ? The native one appears to be quite usable, and I noticed all other scaling options give a text slight "hallowing", especially visible when white text is displayed on the dark background (probably due lack of font-smoothing on mac os). This Dell also integrates with Mac OS quite well: night shift works, didn't notice any flickering and it wakes up fast. I had been using dual Studio displays, but 27 inch is just way too limiting (+18ms response makes it feel like a 30hz display instead of 60hz). Then sold one of the Studio Displays and bought The Pro Display XDR (I know, "a bit" of an overkill for coding). The XDR is the best monitor I've ever had, but for that price I'd expect it to last a decade and I'm not sure it will. The repair-cost is absolutely eye-watering too if the XDR breaks a few years later. So, now thinking about returning the XDR and selling the remaining Studio Display.

I think Pete is wrong. Search "macbook pro 14 m1 specs" then first result go to "Display Support" section. First result from Apple, you will notice that it does support max 6K@60Hz. Then same search for "macbook pro 14 m2 specs". You will notice that it does support 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz. So, the bandwidth of the M2 Pro does include 6K@120Hz. Why? Because the stream of 8K@60Hz = 6K@120Hz = 4K@240Hz and it is higher than this Dell monitor which is exactly 4.62K@120Hz (5K is the marketing name). For memory, when you double the K, you double the width and the height. So, the area, the pixel quantity is squared (quadrupled) from 4K to 8K but doubled from 4K to 6K (6K has the same height as 4K, but double width) *So 120Hz is OK for M2 Pro/Max and not for M1 Pro/Max.*

I’ve been eying this monitor for a long time but in another review it was mentioned it did not work at 120hz full resolution on a MBP M1 Pro. Are you 100% sure it does? It would basically seal the deal for me. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="696">11:36</a>

Will four monitors of these work if they are connected to your computer?

Be careful with the App Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM) from Dell for macOS to use it for the settings for Dells. It causes for some machine heavy memory leaks and east up all the memory. Besides that, great display. :) To feed 120hz in 5k you will need a beefy GPU ;) or have to use DLSS/FSR.

Could you make a comment on that dell how it fares with KVM setup? I'm really interested in this bit - like, a scenario where a contractor laptop is plugged in alongside daily-Desktop PC. Does it work well for you? This is something I feel missing in Samsung

I find it difficult finding a monitor that I can do productivity and gaming on. Any recommendations? I think at the end here, you said you would recommend something else for both.
@PeteMatheson3 ай бұрын
If you''re a serious gamer then I'd suggest having one monitor for productivity (like the Dell 40) and go for a separate monitor for gaming. If you're a casual gamer though, the Dell will do just fine on its own :)

Could you recommend another 4K Monitor Mac friendly monitor with AMAZING specs that costs less? 😬😅 A friend told me abt Dell being MAC friendly! I need a 32 or 34" or larger 4K monitor for production and video editing and productivity on my M2! I just picked up the Alienware 32" 4K UHD 240Hz Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor (AW3225QF) on sale $1200 + tax Love the specs but still not sure of it's overkill for what i need it for!? Also would love to spend less😅Wondering which 32"+ 4k monitor is best for my M2 Studio?

Probably a niche question but how limited are the custom layout options using Dell Display Manager? Would it be possible to create a centered FHD or QHD window to run games in or does the entire display need to be used? Gaming is not a priority but it would still be cool to run games at both a reasonable frame rate and PPI

HI! I'm having a hard time figuring out what monitor(s) to get. I've been mostly thinking about having 2 monitors, 27-32", and 4k minimum. I will never be gaming, it's purely productivity. I'm in real estate and have tons of windows open at a time, and a few different programs running simultaneously. I will also be doing video editing for properties, nothing crazy intensive. My main concern is the scaling and PPI when using a Mac. I'm getting a M4 Max MBP once it's released because my current MBP is ~10yrs old. I was originally thinking about getting two ASD or LG Ultrafines but after doing more research I want something that has at least 120hz. I've seen comparisons of using an external 60hz monitor with M3 MBP's and don't like how it's not smooth compared to the native MBP screen. I've seen forum posts with guys using between 2 to 3 LG OLED monitors; running at 120hz with no issues, but I'm worried about burn-in since I always have a lot of documents up at all times. Seeing this review, I'm now leaning towards the G9. I understand the scaling might not be exact but it seems to be close enough, and at 120hz which is enough for me, also the amount of screen real estate. I'm currently using a Samsung CJ791 34" and everything seems fine to me scaling wise, so having a screening nearly 2x the size would be nice. The other option I'm looking at, again after seeing your review, is the Dell 40" UltraSharp, just wish it was a bit wider. If I do go with the Dell, I was thinking of getting a smaller 4k screen on the side vertically for scrolling through docs. Sorry for the tl;dr comment but any insight would be appreciated. I originally wrote this for the G9 review you made but I saw that this review is newer, so the chance of you replying would be higher on this review.... lol THANK YOU!!!!!

I have 3x 27 inch monitors with 60 Hz each and would like to switch to 1 monitor of a similar size and at least 120 Hz. I use a MacBook Pro and would like to have 5k on the monitor as well. The Pro Display XDR is too small for me and doesn't have at least 120 Hz. I'm afraid that the Dell is also too small and has too low a pixel density. Are there any other alternatives in the meantime?

I saw in the menu that you can set it to adobeRGB color space. You didn’t select it. As a photographer I’m interested to know what percentage of the AdobeRGB color space it covers. I do not seem to be able to find that in the specs online.

Well 1 second / 120 is 8.333milliseconds so it can react faster than it refreshes the picture with 5 and 8 ms.

Is it possible to connect two laptops (MacBook Pro and Dell Latitude) via thunderbolt? Or is it one thunderbolt and then HDMI/DP connection for the other? Would like to be able to have minimal cables with both machines getting powered through thunderbolt if possible.

Hi mate! Thanks for the review! I've had this monitor for about a month now and overall, I love it. However, I’m encountering an issue where videos, especially in full-screen mode, seem choppy, as if they’re playing at 25fps or lower. I film all my videos at 60fps for my channel, and while I don’t have this issue on other screens, it’s quite noticeable here. The same thing happens when playing videos on KZbin or VLC. Have you experienced anything similar or have any suggestions on what might be causing this? It's a bit frustrating because it makes it hard to tell if my videos are smooth during editing. Any advice would be appreciated!🙌

Very odd! And no, nothing like that so far. What are you running the screen at for resolution and refresh rate? And have you tried swapping to a different video source? (HDMI / DP etc)

Hi, I have the same monitor. I am having issues using an external powered USB hub connected to it when I use the monitor with my MacBook Pro M2 via Thunderbolt 4. None of the items connected to the hub work (tried different hubs). On Windows, instead, with the same Hub configuration (DisplayPort + upstream usb-c) everything works fine. Have you experienced the same kind of issues?

How many "devices" can you connect and switch between with the Kvm? I have a setup with PC (gaming) one macbook pro (m1 max) and one macbook air(m2) where I would like to switch keyboard, mouse, mic, monitor and ethernet, but I couldn't find anything in the manual if this is possible

What about videos? Can I use this monitor to play standard 4k videos on it? They typically have black bars on top and bottom, and if I am not wrong, the 5k display of the Dell would be perfect, when stretching the video to 5120 horizontal and 2160p vertical size. Is it possible, or do I have to crop videos first, and then play them using vlc or a similar program?
