I really liked how this episode shifted towards the end game now that we're in the back half of the run. The actor who plays Ochibe has a real presence that is distinct from everyone else we've met, and I don't know if it was just me but the costumes went to a different level since she's been back in Osaka. These last episodes should be exciting. Let me know what you think.

That tea house scene was EPIC. Everything was subtext. 1. First she said that “this is a private place where it can be dark if you wish it”. As if to say “I know whats going on". 2. Then Kiku mentions to his apparent ice how you notice something when its gone. Translation “this must end” 3. Then, after observing his guests says “a woman cannot look away when someone else suffers”, which subtly hints at her deducing what's going on between Mariko-sama and Blackthorne. But also hunting they can have a moment one last time. 4.Then comes the part where Kiku sits behind Mariko while she behind to explain the willow world. Where she is saying the words but Anjin can only see Mariko. Mariko, on her part, started bu translating for Kiku dono, saying “she says” etc; but gets all caught up and started translating as if she herself was saying it. 5. And it caps off with Kiku-dono asking if Mariko were to join them. It was all well staged. So well staged that, thankfully, they did not add the actual pillowing scene which would have cheapened the whole thing. Then the walk the morning after was a highly ritualized public display that was meant to dispell any rumors, and Mariko did warn Blackthorne not to make a scene. Im so glad you see through the subtext and all the Domestic and political layers behind it all.

@comicbooksgalore8582 truth be told, the entire willow world scene could have been shot differently. It could have just been Kiku attacking Blackthorne while Mariko was forced to watch; and it could have revealed Mariko's state of mind the same way this scene did. But it would fail in a big way in two important ways: One: it would fail to show Kiku's wits and ability to read people. Two: It would relegate Kiku as just a cheap immitation of GoT's Ross, but with an Asian skin; therefore, losing the Asian audience who understands their cultural sensibilities. on the otherhand, seeing that the actual pillowing scene is necessary, acting like a sex starved teen-ager, is just another way of having a narrow-minded world view in which only your point of view needs to be catered to.

I've read the book but only once and a long time ago. So getting to watch this is like rediscovering Shogun. My wife commented that Ochibe moves like a snake, I have to agree with her. I love this version more than the original, because of the change of focus. I don't like the actor playing Blackthorn but I can live with him. He does an okay job but he's not in the league of the other actors. I requested the book from my local library, of course someone has it checked out right now. Super late to watching your breakdown, which i now know is a BIG MISTAKE. I love your insights here. Let me just add a few things to help recontextualize some stuff while keeping the lines “history is written by the victors” in mind. The first few minutes revealed that Mariko was unaware of his father’s plans and held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then, and i didnt know this until this episode, she views him as below her station, or beneath her in ranking, as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him; also telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba sama) what a joke and worth less alliance it was to marry her off to the Toda family;and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better. And so, when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol😅😅😅 Also, though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust” as in she betrayed him for wishing for death instead of noticing the great plans and hopes she placed on her when he married her off to a lesser house. And it puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence. But put yourself in the man's shoes. Mariko looked down on her and that marriage even before they were married. Hated him for sparing her life. and have been ice cold towrds here for the length of their marriage. That would drive any man bitter and resentful. which brings into question whether or not the physical abuse is a more recent occurrence or not (still not a good look and not something to be condoned either way); and if he had always acted harshly towards her in turn from the start or not, or if that was his defence mechanism toward's mariko's cold treatment towards her.

What was the significance of Kiku escorting Anjin back to his home?
@angelfieseler53587 ай бұрын
In the book she bowed him home partly to gain a reputation as a courtesan and partly to get Omi jealous
@Inkspeckle7 ай бұрын
could also be about Toranaga wanting to show that Anjin should be considered a full fledged follower of his, since some of the men (notably Buntaro and Omi) still struggle to treat him as anything but a "barbarian". After all Kiku is not just a prosititute, she is a high-class courtesan whose services aren't offered to just anyone. By showing Kiku and Gin leading Anjin from the Teahouse in public they openly show that he is to be considered and important and valued follower of Toranaga's, especially since it seems to be public knowledge that he was the one who arranged Kiku's services for Blackthorn. Which makes it extra infuriating for Omi of course. You can see that he is struggling to keep his composure as he witnesses the two.

Ok, heres a cool theory. [Preface: i have not read the book nor watched the ‘85 minisiries, but i am aware of the details of the battle of sekigahara in broad strokes] What if Ochiba-sama is playing everyone, including the audience all along? What if she is manipulating Ishido to act more rashly and brutally so that his actions would lead to his allies abandoning him? What if she urges him to display his power by leaving Osaka castle and try to engage Toranaga in an open field? 200 plus women and Taiko-sama cant concieve. What if (and this is a deviation from the historical Tokugawa) the Heir, Ochiba’s son, IS Toranaga’s child? But thats just a wild theory on my part.

I loved a nuance included within the bargaining between Mariko and Gin over the price of John's visit to the Tea House that centered around the lacquer tea cups. After Gin points out the "lovely" lacquer cups in an apparent slight to her hostesses, Fuji apologizes citing the earthquake for causing great damage and loss for everyone in the city. Gin's self control of her words, expressions, and handling of the tea cup were amazing and pronounced by her graceful return of the her cup to the tray capped by the delicate, but very noticeable sound of the cup softly, but firmly, landing on the tray. I don't believe I've seen a show with this level of attention of detail since Downton Abbey.

He wants her to feel the same way to help him get them out .just so england could do the same things even worst later by way of the united states( the eldest and most rebellious child of England)

I feel bad for Buntaro tho', she got cuckold after he's trying to save her wife from suicide and saving Toranaga. Buntaro and Fuji are the only two character that i like..and maybe Yabushige.😂

While the show is better than a lot out there I still find it lacking. There's zero chemistry between Blackthorn and Mariko. They seem to miss great opportunities for emotional moments through out the series. I'll probably keep watching, but it's not as good as I hoped.

@@thelukos he seemed to annoy her a lot with her outwardly expressing it a lot she even seemed annoyed with him when he was with Kiku when she said "By not making a scene for both our sakes." it's a very different presentation from the novel and 80s mini-series the 2024 version of Mariko comes off harsh and cold with Blackthorne the 1980 version and novel version of Mariko comes off kind and warm with Blackthorne

What a dull episode
@BlueT10007 ай бұрын
I found this episode to be incredibly dull. They must've been trying to save some money after the earthquake episode, or something. Plus, I'm not afraid to admit that I don't know what the hell is happening most of the time. So many names and clans, etc... As a result, I gotta watch videos like this after the fact.

"A man may go to war for many reasons: conquest, pride, power.* But a woman is simply at war." More clearly with each episode, the theme of 'Shogun' is Power: who has it, who hasn't; who has 'agency' and who hasn't; conversely, who is a victim and who isn't. Likewise on the domestic level, it's always a question of who has power and who is able to resist power. Peace, yes. Control; again, yes. What it is NOT interested in is good and evil. Religion not excepted. This marks it as the fruit of post-modern thinking about sex and gender roles. Toranaga reveals to Mariko at the end of this episode, "Your father once told me he wished you'd been born a man." *Feminist B.S. I never heard my father, a gunner in WWII, mention any of these. Nor my bother, who fought in Viet Nam. Nor my great-grandfather, killed in the Civil War.

If Ochiba respected Taiko she would grow to like Torunaga as his best friend over the years. Taiko surely spoke greatly of him to her. But then again it would make more sense for her to hate Taiko due to all the unwanted sex and drugs that came with his service. If she hated him then why be pissed off that he's dead and want to stay in the game of having to fuck men to get favors... She would want to be left alone if she was a real person.

*The series is good but has dropped the ball in some many places. One simple example is Mariko reads his ships log. Remember Mariko speaks Japanese and Portuguese. John speaks Portuguese and English as he is an English man. They speak to one another in Portuguese but we hear English for the benefit of the entire show not being subtitled. What's my point? The Ship's logs on an English ship crewed by English men would be written in ENGLISH! Mariko would not be able to read them! Yet she tells him "I read your deeds in your own words." How?*

The Erasmus is a Dutch ship. Mariko knows Latin as well.

The crew is English. All Protestant English men. The Dutch lie is their cover. I lived in London for 3 years. English men only speak English (mostly). But if you need to believe this is the one show in history without a plot hole so be it. Do go look at the thread “where are the Black people” you will really be triggered 😂

Ok. Did a little research. To plug this plot hole it is entirely plausible that the ship logs were written in Latin. Up until the mid-15th Century that was the norm and its conceivable the practice continued into the 16th Century. This may be especially true with a Dutch ship with an English crew.
