It is amusing that this series has turned out not to be the Blackthorne and Mariko show as so many of the haters expected it to be. In fact Blackthorne so far has been relegated to be a bit player with little to offer, other than the lucky saving of Toranaga during the EQ, for humor as an antagonizer of the Jesuits and the romance between he and Mariko has barely been addressed in the show, unlike in the book and original mini-series. This has been a Japanese production of the Shogun novel. Other than the few scenes with Blackthorne, nearly every scene is spoken in Japanese dialogue with subtitles.

The scene between Toranaga and Mariko was intense. Each was articulating their own grief. Mariko's grief for the family, including recent ones, and honor she lost many years ago. Toranaga's grief of his son and dearest friend. I still suspect a history between Gin and Toranaga but those are only hints of such a thing. I loved this episode. You mentioned great acting. My theory is that Torunaga could not trust any and I mean any of allies to keep it secret that he had no intentions of actually surrenduring. And if Ishiso had any sort of indication that he wasnt surrendering, it would be all over. He simply could not take the risk. 1. Yabushige If Torunaga ordered him to attack with the cannons instead of Yabushige doing it on his own, he runs the risk of Yabushige or any of his spies (or Ohmi) spreading the news all the way to Ishido. Yabushige had to make the decision of his own volition. But Yabushige was banking on Torunaga having an ace up his sleeve and wouldn't dare to step out line with his own plans. Hiromatsu's seppuku was the final thing which Yabushige needed to believe Torunaga had lost his mind and finally surrendered, which led him to accept John Blackthorne's offer. Ultimately, Yabushige and Ohmi were to the weak link that gave Ishido too much info on Torunaga. And in their vulnerable state, Torunaga must have assumed his clan was full of Yabushiges and Ohmis that would betray him. God damn man. 😂 Hard being a leader.

Toranaga's desire to win isn't out of selfishness. It's out of the greater good. He truly believes that a Japan with Ishido & the Christian regents in charge would turn the country into a puppet of the church & systemize the corruption that's already there. Furthermore he didn't order Hiromatsu to kill himself, but his friend took it upon HIMSELF to do that-----so that no one else would have to. Including his son. Toronaga saw this & accepted his sacrifice. One of the things a commander MUST do is to order people to their deaths to save many more. Toronaga will no doubt order Mariko to sacrifice herself in some way but the deaths of these loved ones is TRIVIAL compared to the many warriors who will die in the coming war for the country. That's war. You only do it if you truly believe in your cause, which he does.

What's hilarious about Mariko's arrival on Yabu's ship is that everyone there thought Toranaga had no idea they were going to Osaka, until her presence and message reveals that no only did he know, he fully expected this from both of them. This is evident by Omi warning his uncle about Toranaga's possible retaliation should he find out about this journey. Mariko carries a letter from Toranaga addressed to Yabushige, confirming he not only knew, but wants him to do a certain job there. BUT Mariko's presence and her orders to accompany them signals that Toranaga also expected the Anjin there. Mariko has nothing to do with Yabushige, but Toranaga knows Blackthorn still needs an interpreter to properly communicate with Yabu. Basically this is just a very subtle way for Toranaga to say "you thought you could outplay me, but I was ten moves ahead of you all along "

@bb11111167 ай бұрын
One thing I like about this series is how deep it goes in exploring medieval Japanese culture. There are multiple rules that are strictly followed. Also among the elite their communication is very subtle. (SPOILERS) Mariko and Buntaro are an example of this. They have been married for many years. Buntaro believes he understands his wife at least to some extent but she explains that he does not understand her at all. If she is going to die, it will be on her terms. She wants to be free of his control and their marriage, and only if they are divorced, only then would she choose death or life. Buntaro is devastated by that. Mariko also explains to Blackthorn that he does not understand what loyalty in Japan means. Blackthorn is baffled by Japan but then he realizes that he no longer wants to be a dirty, smelly European. Blackthorn is slowly being pulled into the Japanese way of life. Toranaga is navigating this maze of Japanese culture and the tremendous threat to his life. He has a vision for Japan but he has to win it against what seem impossible odds. Toranaga’s only option is delay. His son’s accidental death allows 49 days of mourning before going to Osaka. The sacrificial death of Hiromatsu gives Toranaga more time for mourning and it also forces his generals to back down and be loyal to Toranaga’s commands. In the meantime in public Toranaga is playing the sickly, defeated old man. Back in Osaka this play acting by Toranaga gives Ishido the confidence that he has defeated Toranaga and that his surrender is a formality. So, Ishido respects Toranaga’s days of mourning because it does not matter to him. Ishido is convinced that Toranaga is going to lose and Toranaga knows that. Like understanding hawks, Toranaga very accurately sees not only what Japanese people will do, but what Blackthorn will do.

The character that i am intrigued the most about is Buntaro. His loyalty was unquestionable in the beginning. He stayed back to help his lord escape. Then he comes back to find his wife being a little too close to a man he despises, then Mariko herself delivers a heartbreak, and despite his abuse there's a part of him that cares for her being his wife, and the episode ends with him having to second his father. He's now the most conflicted man out of the entire bunch. It'll be interesting to see how his fate pans out. We know he is a great warrior and a great asset to Toranaga and he could be as deadly were his loyalty to change due to all the above factors.

Best episode so far. I'm not convinced that Hiromatsu knew of Toranaga's plan. Though I feel he knew that Toranaga had a plan and his sacrifice would further the plan. One thing I haven't seen anyone mention, was that you can clearly see the ongoing construction happening in Edo in this episode. At first I thought that was just a neat detail by the showrunners, however looking into Tokugawa's history, he spent a considerable amount of time developing Edo from a small village to rival large cities at the time like Osaka and Kyoto. Edo became a center of culture for Japan during the Edo Period. The city is now known as Tokyo. It also made so much sense now why the Jesuits wanted to build a church in Edo so badly.

I have read the book 7 times, I love it, and seen the original tv series many times and though the production value of this new series is better, the visual quality is top notch, I definitely prefer the original tv series for its greater faithfulness to canon (the book) and I think almost all actors were better in the original tv series (esp the actors playing Blackthorne, Alvito, Rodrigues, DellAqua and I also prefer the original Mariko, Yabu and Omi; Sanada is very good as Toranaga but no one beats the legend Mifune). Some changes will always be necessary in any adaptation to the screen but in this episode alone they went overboard with changes imo and to such an extent that I have no patience any more for this which is becoming a reinvented Shogun and not the true, valued Shogun that I want to see. The showrunners killed Naga last time in direct contradiction with canon (the book). And now they did it again. In effect 'killing' Lord Toda Hiromatsu (instead of the general in the book) with the decree was the final straw and not giving Hiromatsu the respect such a huge character from the books deserved (and seeing his joy when he understands the ruse). The showrunners went for cheap dramatic effect instead of faithfulness to canon and to this character who meant a lot to both Toranaga, Mariko and Buntaro and to us readers/viewers. It is inexcusable to me. Perhaps people who don't know canon and don't care will not mind, but I do and I doubt I am alone with this view. I will return to the fantastic book and the original tv series which though cheaper in looks and effects with modern standards in mind was more faithful to canon, to this wonderful story, and had its heart and mind in the right place.

Hi I’m from Japan and would like to tell you the meaning of ‘49days’ after Toranaga s son died. In Buddhism,when people go to the other world,they will be judged every seven days from the first seven days to the seventh day, and the destination will be decided at the judgment on the last 49th day. There are 6 destinations after death. The remaining family members and relatives will hold a memorial service so that the deceased can go to paradise by praying that the suffering of the deceased will be removed. Toranaga could use this 49days of his son’s death to making plan and prepare for fighting.This custom remains as a funeral custom in Japan to this day.

Does anyone know if this Shogun is a limited series, or do they plan to keep it going for a few more seasons?

I have seen people write "Toranaga" as; Torunaga, Toronaga, Torenga, Torinaga, Toranga, Tronga, Tongara, Tonaraga, Tornga, Tonga, and Tronga.

In the last sceen where Toranaga(Sanada) making his prayer to his son and Hiromatsu, I noticed that his prayer is a signature move of Sonny Chiba I believe it is a homage to Sanada's master of acting in jidaigeki!!

Funny that Mariko talks about loyalty when Toranaga was willing to leave Blackthorne with the Portugese just to save his own skin, and this was after Blackthorne saved Toranaga's life twice

Loyalty and the perspective of what capacity of loyal the subjects are to Toranaga is seen in this episode. Some offer loyalty on conditions like the courtesan, priest, and Habushige.His son demonstrates blind loyalty by trying to kill his uncle not knowing all of the true plans. Mariko learns of what she must do to be loyal to Toranaga. Hiromatsu is pure loyal because hes willing to sacrifice himself in order for the plan towork. This is foreshadowed in blackthornes and Marikos conversation. Toranaga is playing 3-D chess

I wish I could say I like this version but very lackluster overall. Starts off with Blackthorne being the center of the story to the point where he is an afterthought. Yes, it's called Sho-gun but anyone who has read the book would know what I'm talking about. BTW, no chemistry between the Blackthorne and Mariko characters.
Hiromatsu made me look away in painful tears. Damn you.

I "love" how feckless Blackthorne is in this FX Series. In the book, he had fought pirates, Spanish marines, was a Lord in his own country and learned Japanese quickly. Here, he walks with some strange bow-legged limpy gait and doesn't seem like a lord at all. In the book the Japanese and the Portuguese were amazed how quickly her learned the Japanese language and his attempts to learn and fit into their culture. His arc in this series is nearly pointless thus far. His love arc from the novel, gone, his knowledge and usefulness, largely gone. His loyalty to Toranaga, gone. It's a shame really.

Torinaga also designed things to get Anjin close to the one general who actually is playing both sides, and with the cannon and guns.
