This is part of a series of approximately five-minute reviews and comments about mainly American films; these were all created in the late '80s by Louise Stratten and me for broadcast on television.
I consider this a kind of (I hope) public service to support and encourage film lovers; most of the pictures discussed are available in some form today. PB

Such a great movie on so many levels. "When a legend becomes fact, print the legend."

Wayne and Stewart also co-starred in Don Siegel's The Shootist (1976). RIP

This movie and The Last Hurrah with Spencer Tracy are two of Ford's best. They both are beautifully filmed but they also depict the sad nature of politics in this country.

Odd. I saw it as a 8 year kid, and I appreciated it right away. Actually, I loved it then, and do now. It's one of the greatest movies ever.

I wonder how long Wayne hid in that alley to shoot Liberty Valance in the back. What a coward!

@Chi town but Peter Bogdanovich is dead. How the hell could he spoil the ending if he's dead?

The story is good, but I can't get past the obvious indoor studio fake set. Maybe I've been spoiled by movies shot outdoors. Much more believable.

It’s not a “wide open spaces” movie. Ford often shot those with great reverence and beauty. This one has more to do with the town and the civilization process of the American Wild West.

Good movie but that casting is absurd - you have a guy who has got to be in his LATE 50s playing someone fresh out of law school. I mean there were plenty of other great actors in the mid 1960s in their 20s who could have played that role.

Black and white helps with the illusion. This is story telling, not truth. Let yourself be carried along by the tale.
