Peter Bogdanovich Recommends: Spencer Tracy

Spencer Tracy, IMO (and a lot of other people's) helped revolutionize film acting. The method actors of the 50s are famous for changing what was considered to be good acting but Clift, Brando, et al were standing on the shoulders of Tracy, Bogart, Stewart, Farmer, and other actors from the 30s & 40s who brought a more naturalistic approach to their roles. Tracy was so ahead of his time. Some of his performances, it's like the other actors aren't even in the same movie because they're so over the top & theatrical.

Sensing your sorrow on a sad night, Lynn, as Peter slipped away of natural causes today (January 6th)...his prose & documentaries wonderfully illuminated my love of classical American cinema-along with Scorsese, of course...R.I.P.

Cagney once said "you never saw anyone do an impression of Spencer Tracy because reserve & control are difficult traits to mimic"...That being said, who doesn't love to see & hear golden era stars being affectionately lampooned by comics...

This must be before 93 or 94. That's when Tom Hanks became the second consectutive winner.
