This is incredible, amazing, never knew Butterworth was a (WAFU) fleet air arm pilot, had been shot down in action and that he had attempted an escape from Stalag luft 1 and had been at Stalag Luft 3 (the famous great escape camp)! What a fantastic old school (golden age) generation these guys all came from, with their still upper lips amazing daring do stories (told in a matter of fact, self-depreciating and nonchalant style) and humble modesty when you consider they were responsible for overcoming the worse tyranny the World has ever experienced.
@LizzieWhiz
@LizzieWhiz 5 ай бұрын
Throughout his time as a POW he sent back to his family coded letters giving information. Peter stayed behind in Stalag-3 instead of escaping so he could keep sending back information to the UK via his letters.

Growing up in the 1960’s my parents war time friends and relatives all seemed to be of the caliber of these ‘chaps’. How I miss their humour and ‘can do’ attitude. The world is poorer for their passing.

Probably my fav Carry On actor. Peter was brilliant at playing the bumbling half-wit, Nothing at all like his real self. I don't know for certain if this is stagsd or not, but it doesn't matter does it? It gives us an insight into the man behind the mask and I'm glad for it. R I P Peter.

His mannerisms, his bumbling fumbling self effacing characters, were a hoot. A classic character actor. Stole the scenes on everyone of his appearances. A mild an charming man off stage... Never knew he was married to Janet B. She was an amazing talent for mannerisms, voices an personalities of famous people.

I agree 👍 I grow up with these real people. Today youth & people are disgusting & idol layabouts. I said something to a bloke who I knew back in 1995 when I was 18. I said by the year 2010 the people of now will be lazy won't work earn money and do nothing. Yet money they get is because they easy they do not know what hard work is. I was proved correct. I was lucky to be in a work for my money 💰. I been out of work for 7 years now and trying To get back after I had stomach cancer I am also not a scrounger.

Rupert Davies FRSA (22 May 1916 - 22 November 1976) was a British actor best remembered for playing the title role in the BBC's 1960s television adaptation of Maigret, based on Georges Simenon's Maigret novels.

A gent of a man, I always think he was not used enough in the carry on films, but I think it was because every time he comes into one he steals every line and steals the film, one of the best of his time, a war hero and a bloody fine actor as well, long may he carry on and its a joy to watch him on TV.

ross wenman Completely agree with you Ross. Even when sharing a scene with the bigger stars like Kenny Williams, Sid James or Kenny Connor, his face is so expressive that he can just steal it. When given larger roles (Khyber, Screaming, Camping, Behind & Don't loose your head) he always stood out.

Peter was a fine actor, he was one of the stars in the carryons that you always knew his face but couldn't put the name to it. The carry on films were not as good if Peter was not in them or only had a minor role. His finest performance came in carry on abroad, playing the manic hotelier, he literally stole the show from an all star cast outshining sid and kenneth, no easy task! My one abiding memory of Peter Butterworth was watching him perform a comic monologue on BBC tv childrens hour in the 1950s while fruitlessly waiting for a kettle to boil so that he could have cup of tea.The trouble was he had put the kettle to boil over a single candle which was woefully insufficient!

Peter was a great comedy actor in the carry on film series. I found him very funny. He died suddenly in the late 1970s of a heart attack it's very tragic actors work hard during there working lives but they suffer from heart trouble because their hearts can't cope with the strain. Peter sellers is another comedy actor who suffered heart trouble. He died of a heart attack at the young age of 54 much too early to pass on. L

I thought this one was a bit strange, mostly people he hadn't seen in decades (fair enough, nice war service reunion) but hardly anyone from his showbusiness career and no family outside his marriage. It concentrated a lot about the war but virtually nothing after 1950 in showbusiness. Compare this to Spike Milligan shown aound the same time.

There was an attempt in the 1990s by the makers of carry on movies. To bring it back. Carry on Columbus. It tanked at the box office. All the actors in were alternative comics. Bernard bresslaw was in it with Barbara windsor. And maybe fineella fielding. Barbara Windsor didn't like the film. And didn't think it was all that funny. She hasn't made another film since. But her financial situation wasn't great at that time either.
