Cetera's voice is still great CHICAGO should have let Cetera sing in the key he wanted to, during the band performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Awards. Instead, those old farts ridiculed Cetera - but he sounds better than they do.

Finally, a full version of "Feeling Stronger"! Thanks so much for filming and sharing this treat with the world, as well as for zooming in on Peter's bass playing! What a thrill to see my bass guitar hero jamming (not just playing lazy, sissy notes, mind you -- but really jamming like the "old days" with Chicago!) on the famous white Fender Precision. I hope he keeps it up and adds some more classic songs to his set in the future. I would love to see/hear him play bass on "Dialogue," "Beginnings," "Questions 67 & 68," "Introduction," "Make Me Smile," "Saturday in the Park," "Call On Me," "Brand New Love Affair," "Take Me Back to Chicago," "Little One," "Alive Again," "Street Player," and some lesser known but excellent Chicago album tracks, such as "Goodbye" from Chicago V, "Hollywood" and "What's This World Coming To" from Chicago VI, and "Woman Don't Want To Love Me" from VII. Those feature some of Cetera's greatest bass performances.

Cetera was an amazing bassist in the early 1970s, up there with the McCartneys and Jack Bruces of the bass world. Never understand why he put it away in the mid--1980s.

Original key was A. This is in E. Down 2 and a half steps. He has requested Chicago play this in E at the R&R Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. This may be why they're hesitating to reply. They still play the song in the original key of A to this day.
@yobculture9 жыл бұрын
Robert Lamm, the person who wrote 25 or 6 to 4, can sing it in the original key! Check out his solo performance available on KZbin. Performed in New Zealand.
@joelucayt9 жыл бұрын
+yobculture Well...not really. Yes, he does it in the original key of A, but the High C in the middle of the verse is sung by Scheff. Lamm sings the harmony below.
@jimmididr9 жыл бұрын
+Vincent S I'm not sure if you have your music theory facts straight. The original is in C. Peter is here doing it in C. The current band plays this song in C. Granted, back in the day, he was hitting full voice C#s, but at 71, he's still getting to the A's (and sometimes B's). I wish I could still hit the notes I used to hit back in the day...
@jimmididr9 жыл бұрын
+Vincent S --- Oh, I just realized you were talking about 25 or 6 to 4... sorry... I only heard "Feelin' Stronger"...
@Zeupater8 жыл бұрын
+Vincent S Just sat down at the keyboard. "Feeling Stronger Every Day" is in Am. In this performance he sang it in the same register. The song also modulates up a whole step halfway or two-thirds of the way through. So, I'd say his range is still quite high. If you're talking about "25 or 6 to 4" the band is playing in E, the original key, but Mr. Cetera seems to be singing a register down. It's what would be the harmony below the original melody for the vocal. Given that he was singing up around an A on "Feeling Stronger..." I wouldn't say his range is lacking. Especially considering he's in his 70's I'd say he sounds great. Also, I have no idea how he sings on a regular basis. He may have just done it in this performance. Maybe he likes it better this way. If he sings this high on a regular basis, out on tour I might choose to sing some songs a little differently too. In any case I don't judge a singer based on his or her range, though PC's sounds fine to me. Some of my favorite singers are baritones or altos.

Be sad no longer. Cetera has the bass line. The "guy" by the drums is doing a "lite" Kum-ba-ya strum to fatten the song and take over at anytime without warning...look at the hands.

Very simple - Lamm once said Peter can sing it in any key. He's older - duh. to me he sounds better than during the symphony tour where, to me, he was clipping or not holding notes. So he dropped it down a bit but really if anybody is freaking out over Em, Am or whatever, please let it go. He sounds great and enjoy it while you can. He's not Jason, Lou or whatever the latest substitute Chicago has come up with. And all Lamm is doing is trying to maintain the Chicago "brand" which any true fan gave up on a long time ago.

Rock on, Peter returning to your bass playing roots but the song are not the same without the horns and if only Chicago can do a reunion tour with Peter and Danny, but it won't be the same without Terry, Chicago is just a cover band with Jason Scheff doing karaoke. Chicago use to kick ass in the 70s when Terry and Peter were in the band.

For "sonics," apparently. Also, Cetera only plays three songs on the bass, so he probably doesn't want to kick his bass player, Joe Chemay, off the stage. And for unknown reasons, Cetera seems insecure about his bass playing skills.

There was a great clip of David Foster talking about Peter and the Bass. I think he just got tired of playing it - especially when as a solo he has to sing EVERY song.
@RG-hf4et5 жыл бұрын
When Peter went solo, he stopped playing bass so he could focus on his singing. Got to respect him for that. Only recently, the past several years, Peter decided to play bass for the last 2-3 songs. Peter doesn't need help to play bass as someone eluded to. What's Peter going to do - tell Joe Chemay to leave the stage while he plays? Come on, get real guys!

I do play bass and I understand how difficult it is to play and sing. I guess I was just disappointed to think that he needs help!

fenderbass57 he suffered from some sort of hand injury and had to give up bass. His Chicago stuff is so challenging. Nice to see him playing again.
@kennycetera15223 жыл бұрын
No, he didn’t stop from a hand injury! Who made that up? He stopped because keyboard bass became the thing in the eighties. wtf. Again, as someone said in another comment, Joe Chemay was the full time bass player in his band. Peter only played a couple songs so they just “added” Peter’s to the mix when he wants to pull out the bass and play. That’s it. Joe sings as well as plays damn good bass.

@kimnott98047 жыл бұрын
Swallow his pride and let the parasite Jimmy Pankow insult him and call the shots? You must be joking...
@frandanco62897 жыл бұрын
Kim Nott - I have seen a few interviews with the Chicago Band on HBO and somewhere else, and you are correct, Jimmy Pankow is kind of a smart-ass, but you have to know, most musicians, especially jazz musicians, all have very high opinions of themselves, even to a fault.. :) There is nothing they have not seen or played before, and they can become very critical of anything else that comes along.. It just goes with the territory of a lot of those musicians.. I know this from personal experience with my Father in Law, a jazz horn player who played with some of the absolute pioneers of jazz horn players, and there was NOTHING you could ever tell him, because he knew everything and nothing was ever better.. He was a great guy and all for sure, but when it came to music, no one was ever going to be that good to him.. But the SOUND !!!! When you hear great horn players like Chicago or even more, the Original Blood, Sweat, and Tears horn players, well it puts it all back into perspective... They do work much much harder than anyone.. And they have to have lungs the size of Texas to blow for over a minute, playing a lot of very hard notes all over the scale, and not even take a breath, because it would wreck the song.. There was a falling out with Peter Cetera and the rest of the band, and it goes both ways, they said he did it, he didnt really say much, he just left and never came back.. But as I have said many times, His Perfect Voice, is and will always be the Voice of Chicago Transit Authority/Chicago...

People back in the day didn't subscribe to Peter Cetera because the only way he sang tenor was falsetto. The issue with that was experts knew the voice Peter was laying down on vinyl was not sustainable in his future days. The folks were right, of course. Cetera sounds awful attempting to replicate his former vocals. Just awful. He completely misses notes by more than half-steps, and is struggling to find the falsetto range. He tries to transition into the falsetto steps and is arrogant enough to keep trying even when it clearly isn't there. He eventually stops singing significant portions of his vocals. So sad mainly because he was told this was going to happen decades ago, and ignored his constructive criticism. One may counter this observation with "yeah, he made a mint" but that sense of purpose isn't acceptable. For one, any symphony or orchestra comes across as totally phony and low class for featuring him in concert. I doubt Cetera takes solace in that he's a superstar to tone-deaf groupies. It's one thing to be a fan, but it's a much more thing to learn music so that you can discern and appreciate it greater.
