I am guessing, from the comments made at the start, that this was actually filmed about 2 years ago and that maybe the reason that it wasn't put online at the time was due to the technical issues, with lights going off, poor internet connection etc, etc. However despite these minor irritations this was pure Gold. I am Shotokan but long enough in the tooth to remember Kimura Sensei and his reputation for having a devastating punch, which was attributed to this mysterious "double hip twist." The reputation has been passed down to his student, Peter Consterdine, who can now explain in great detail how the double hip twist enhances the power of the punch. I started taking notes and got to over 30 points of interest. I follow Scott Langley on KZbin and would be interested to know if he has been able to incorporate any of this into his personal style?

It's easy to hide that initial hip movement of the double hip action with kizama tsuki. This is why the gyakku from the old boxing 1 2 is more powerful than just throwing an empty gyakku.

These are very interesting punch mechanics, has Sensei Consterdine ever measured the result on some kind of force meter? It would be great to have some actual data to compare and analysis .

I always remember Peter saying, "Feeling is believing." I have held an impact pad whilst Peter was demonstrating the punching technique and boy did I feel it and believed. An unsuspecting 3rd Dan Shotokan karateka adopted his strong, low stance and held the pad for Peter to demonstrate the punch. I stood about 1.5 metres behind and said, "I'll catch you!" The karateka gave me a disparaging look.......Peter punched.........I caught him! Absolutely incredible impact! Feeling is believing!😃

I've watched this gentleman before and if you watch him hit the pad, it does look like his hip finishes with the punch or very close to it rather than that much ahead. I think he practices the fundamental in an exaggerated form to feel the distinct hip movement, but in practice without realizing he does finish the punch with the hip. It makes sense though to lead with that front hip because it both chambers the rear hip and carries the body weight forward but the hip is still active driving into the target rather than just being a catapult for the arm and fist. Just my observation from seeing him in action over the years.

I disagree. To me he IS catapaulting it as you say.. doing it the I was taught.. my favourite analogy is a towel .. twisted around into a straight line.. then ‘whipped’ to create a wave.. the wave travels along the line delivering the energy. You make wave through the body.. and have kime on impact .. the waves generates at the hip.. then transmits through other parts of the body depending on what you hold firm.

@Patinho I'm just looking at the timing of his hip and fist finishing while he is actually punching the target and not the air.

@@oboroshogun his hip goes first then transmits down through locked abdomen to rotate the chest and arm extends.. and then fist connects. No?
@oboroshogun
@oboroshogun Жыл бұрын
@Patinho I think we are making 2 separate points. I agree that the hip begin ahead of the arm but I'm saying the hip still finishes with the arm as it connects not ahead just watch his hip as his fist connects with the pad. They hit very close together if not at the same time. The hip is still carrying into the target, which is good. It's what you want and how literally everyone punches.

As far as karate goes, the shorter stance, vertical fist and emphasis on snap seems a lot more similar to Isshin-Ryu than Japanese styles. Is there any influence from Isshin-Ryu in the punch?

Shigeru Kimura, 8. Dan und Dr. Physik hat diese Art unterrichtet. Der Stil war Tani Shitoryu. Kimura hat seinen Stil dann Kimura Shukokai genannt.

Very interesting concept, thank you for sharing it! But I think it’s useful only for single strikes and it’s totally useless in the series of attacks, where the short impulses play the main role. Just my opinion. Oss!

The comparison to javelin or shotput are not good because they do not have the need for quickness that a punch has. Quickness in punching is more important than power.

Power is the result of Speed. So its required in both sports. The speed of the MOVEMENT doesnt matter, its the attempt to move the weight as fast as possible, thats power. Speed in Punching is faster due to less mass, but the result is still power. force / time = power. olympic lifts are Power lifts, speed lifts, even if they dont move that fast, they require explosive force.

I lol at some of these comments calling his double hip punch "mickey mouse' without presenting any video demonstrations to debunk this. Nothing but hearsay from these arm chair schmucks. I'll quote what rokus from the martial arts journey says, If you think you're martial art works then demonstrate it, if you think something doesn't work then demonstrate that too and explain why it doesn't work. Don't be just an armchair critic, actually demonstrate. Hitchen razor's gentleman....that which is asserted without evidence can be rejected without evidence.

I cannot commend anybody who shifts from Wado Ryu to Shukokai, or worst still, form the instruction of Suzuki Sensei to Kimura. Nor can I condone such a move, as generated by the genuine intend of that person to improving his knowledge and ability in the martial arts, devoid of ulterior motives. On the technical side, with 40+ years of experience in Karate I can at best class this "double-hip-twist" concept as a mickey-mouse theory. Sorry but multi-dan grades awarded to someone by his own organisation do not make a master.

Knocking people out on a regular basis for years does warrant mastery of one's craft. Martial arts politics are retarded and so are idiots who propose this type of politically correct nonsense.

yea, coming from another karate "expert" who I assume has never been in a fight in his life (except with his sister once...and his sister won), does no real contact sparring but believes his techniques are "deadly". I think most of us experienced these flaky "experts" (and usually cowards) in the pre BJJ/MMA revolution days (what I call the self-defense dark ages) but thought most of them had died from mortification.

I personally dont see the reason to bring the other hip forward, whipping the punching hip back THEN forward, thats like pulling your arm back before punching, its wasted movement and telegraphing. Is not normal hip rotational torque the same thing ? he is simply moving his bodyweight forward then snapping his hip like every boxer does. The torque created from the spine out to the shoulder is greater than the torque created from the opposite shoulder to the punching shoulder. its snappier. Chinese Martial Arts figured out proper biomechanics long ago, they call it "chi", westerners confused that with some mystical energy, what they meant was proper coordinated power.
