In the film Dracula A.D. 1972, he was originally casted as the father of the female lead. After the death of his beloved wife Helen in 1971, he aged so visibly that the script was hastily rewritten to make him her grandfather instead.

Mr. Cushing was so much different than the roles he played as Von Frankenstein. He was a warm, kind-hearted soul that suffered tremendously due to his poor wife was taken from him. I feel a sense of true love coming from this great actor. He’s one of my favorites.

He was only 60 in this interview. "The effects of his wife's death proved to be as much physical as mental. For his role in Dracula A.D. 1972, Cushing (who was 58) had originally been cast as the father of Stephanie Beacham's character, but had aged so visibly and lost so much weight that the script was hastily rewritten to make him her grandfather: it was done again in the last Dracula film from Hammer, The Satanic Rites of Dracula."

What a beautiful voice and impeccable pronunciation! As a foreigner who is fairly fluent in English and who has lived in the UK and Australia for 10 years, I must say that people who speak English so beautifully are becoming an endangered species. By the way, I hate that stupid and meaningless expression known as "Received pronunciation" which is so fashionable nowadays. Received? From who? idiots! Just call it for what it is: Public School English because that is where it was born. Most well-educated and decent Englishmen spoke like that until the abominable 1960s. Nowadays, the average Englishman speaks like a lout.

You would never think, listening to him, that he came from a middle-class background and initially got refused at theatre schools because he sounded too gauche and cockney-adjacent. Learning to speak that elegantly was a long, hard-fought battle for him, but the result is amazing.

He'd never have dreamed of taking that role ahead of his friend Christopher - who apparently had his heart set on playing that role for decades. It goes without saying that the latter was amazing as Saruman, but he was allegedly always somewhat disappointed that he didn't get to play Gandalf.
