I met Peter when I was 16. He was the guest artist at a jazz festival, and I was in the school jazz ensemble. I had a small drum solo, and when he gave feedback he was super kind and encouraging without being patronizing. I still think about his advice, more than 30 years later. I consider him to be one of the foundation pieces in my personal drumming development.

I saw Peter play in Boston in the early 80's with a small Jazz Trio... His Ride Cymbal blew me away!... I was able to talk with him after the gig - and he told me what it was... I spent the next 2 years playing every 20" "Zildjian K Heavy Ride" I could find... Finally found a very similar sounding cymbal - and bought it... Still using that incredible cymbal today! Thanks Peter!!!!!!!!!!!

Love Peter man. When I was in high school I had an old video of his and it was something I watched over and over. I tried to cop all of his WR licks. I just LIKED the guy. What an amazing honor it must have been to study wit him. Serious cred! He said in is video some very simple truths that I always took to heart, and the main thing was his emphasis on feeling quarter notes. Seems common sense now as a 40 year old man, but at 14 or 15 it made me really THINK about what I was trying to do, and made me really focus on FEEL. I should add, hearing Peter say "Jim Keltner" before gigs has got to be one of the biggest validations I've ever had haha! When people ask who my favorite drummers are, he's always the guy on the list that nobody knows, but he's one of my top 3.

No subwoofers...absolutely! And...years ago I played a concert at the Bowl with Peter and Christian McBride. The stage crew had set up a plexiglass sound baffle all around the drumset, and Peter said "No, this has to go". Yes! Great interview, Jake...even though I'm a guitarist I learn so much from these. Thanks...!

Great session! I really enjoy listening to Peter. When he mentioned the Berlin Philharmonic bass drum player watching the timpanist (who was watching the conductor), it brought me back to my college days when I actually did the exact same thing as the bass drummer for a piece our conductor composed. I didn't look at the timpanist for my cues because I knew better, I was just so scared of flamming that I deferred to him to avoid it.

I believe it was 1974, I was playing with the Western Illinois University Jazz Band and we were opening for the Kenton band. As I'm setting up I feel someone tap me on the shoulder. I turn around and this guy sticks out his hand and goes, " Hi, I'm Peter Erskine. I thought you might like to meet me." 🤣We chatted for a few minutes. I knew who he was from all the industry buzz about this young guy (we're the same age). I thought afterward, wow this guy is really into himself, LOL. But man, when they started playing, I was like, Yeah, OK, this guy can say whatever he wants because he can back it up, tenfold! It was hard to not follow his career path since it was just a progression of logical steps for someone of his caliber. I saw him again years later when he was with Bass Desires. He's one of those versatile players who can go from one situation to another and instantly play all the appropriate stuff. I hope I get a chance to see him again soon. I'd like to tell him about our first meeting when we were both 19.

@mirkomarkovic3438Ай бұрын
He's absolutely rightt about what he calls "compression", but most mics can take such a high amount of spl, it doesn't sound bad because the membrane can't mpve anymore but you start to choke the drums and also the cymbals start to sound bad as you need to keep them relevant in volume. Extreme loud drumming certainly works in styles where that sound is called for (also remember tpny thompson? A friend of mine assisted a lot on the power station (band) sessions and he said after a done session the kick batter head had an imprint that went in as deep as the beater-so you can play loud but you gotta keep your dynamics in check and it has to be fitting the context obviously)
