Jazz legend Peter Erskine's new 6"x10" signature snare drum was developed with one of his favorite STAR snare drums in mind - the Stave Ash model. Our stave shells are constructed using 12 portions of wood that are cut to precision, then bonded together, tightly forming the 10mm thick shell. Peter prefers the tone of Ash wood for his side snare that provides quick, cutting attack and response. The snare drum comes equipped with the STAR series Super Resonant Mounting System series for easy positioning around the kit, and to maximize the natural resonance of the drum.

Anyone who played for Joe Z and Weather Report is absolute Elite. I've played Tama for 35 years in rock and jazz and country. . I would vouch for them for sure.

This is my dream drum kit. I lost my son a few months ago and to honour him, I want to get a blue STAR Bubinga kit outfitted with this Peter Erskine snare, the Duo snare, and SLP 13x7 snare

Great snare sound I'll admit, but for the price, I'm sure there are better snares out there that can be tuned and adjusted to sound similar to that.

latindrummer777 There is a 12" maple SLP for $200 I think thats great sounding. But Stave drums will always be expensive. Its the build construction. But Tama doesn't make one bad sounding snare above $200.

Yep I own a Mapex Black Panther Premium Steel 10 inch - sound is near identical for what i can hear on this recording...btw branding and drummers names is as old as musical instrument commerce!

I actually seen some of the SLP from Tama and they also have some good sounding snares. I'm more curious on getting the G-Maple for the incredible pop and warmth. But if you tune a snare right, slap on some good skins on it, I'm sure you can get a similar sound. Not exact but close.

latindrummer777 I have a SLP Bubinga and Hand Hammered Vintage snare (basically the MP signature template) and its my favorite. Incredible definition with ghost notes, no snare rattle, amazing crack and volume. It sounds like its EQ'd in person, I still havent changed the stock evans head in months lol. I highly recommend it for rock/ metal, and even jazz.

Thank God the SLP range makes playing Tama affordable, even though it’s not the top of the line. These prices are often beyond the average drummer...especially in these times,

You'll spend just as much trying to locate that and/or the 12" brother, so $999 for this snare is starting to look pretty affordable.

An ash stave drum is pretty far from a maple ply drum, and the the added depth is drastic in the small diameter drum. The new one is definitely more substantial sounding to me. I do love the old one, though - you can hear it all over the place on his trio records with John Taylor and Palle Danielsson.

Great snare drum! Tama should allow buyer to select finish, I think it would look better on his kit as a tom if it matched.

Do you understand the function of this snare to begin with? Tama Star is not meant for the masses, it's meant to be the pinnacle of what kind of drums a drum company can create. Does one really need a 6x10 snare at this price point? Not really. But that's not who is going to buy that snare to begin with.

I suppose all of the high-end hardware on the drum drives the price up, and the sound is really quite nice ... but not 1k nice. Sorry Tama, but at the end of the show it's just an accessory piece.

Holy shit, $999? I'd rather have the Sonor Benny Greb. It's 5.75x13 and can easily achieve the side snare/popcorn sound, and it's a $100 or so cheaper.
