I love how Kate never let go of Peter once in the video - she never ever released her hold on him, it's message so visually powerful. Brilliant stuff from two brilliant artists - not singers or performers - artists.

One of the times I was homeless, I tried hard to settle down in a different state. I was moved to a different program before I could settle. I stayed there and left within 4 months. My own apt, car, job. I couldn't settle with my kids not with me so I worked like crazy. Years passed, kids were back. I paid all my attention to them and my boyfriend. Years passed. Boyfriend cheated, stole, broke my heart forever. Kids moved out. I got sick. Had to stop working. Had to understand my new limitations. Moved in with a guy. Very bad, abusive. I was homeless again. It's hard to be homeless when you use a wheelchair. I'm thankful that I can still walk, just not far. Moved. I was still dating mean guy. Moved to be away from him yet he still came around. And I let him. One day I just told him to get out of my life. He tried once to get back with me. I had the strength to say no! Now, I've put pictures up, decorated. I haven't had that for years. I feel comfortable with myself. Still trying to understand and work through my pain. It's not easy, but it's possible. Don't Give Up!

I love this song, it's very emotional, and it does have a great message to it One of the things I love about Peter Gabriel is his willingness to be vulnerable. Guys will get this macho bs pushed onto them, and it's unhealthy. In a video like this, it reminds me that it really does take a lot of strength and character for a man to be open about his fears and weaknesses, to show that he doesnt have it all together and needs comforting. So many people are afraid to do that, and work too hard to maintain an image that they're too strong and cool for that. That image is like a prison. In the song his life has gone wrong, he's lost all the things that made him feel in control of his life. I think the best message someone in that position could hear is that their value isn't about what they have or what they do or if they're having "success". But that they're still so valuable and loved even at times when they have nothing to give.

The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under Margaret Thatcher. He composed lyrics about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement. Gabriel originally wrote the song from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place

This is such a fantastic, beautiful collaboration. I'm not ashamed to admit I've cried a few times hearing it. True story: Peter originally asked Dolly Parton to sing the female part on this song! Her people had never heard of him and they turned him down. I love Peter Gabriel's voice. This British performer from Chobham, UK was the original lead singer of the band Genesis back in the late 1960's. Other great songs by Peter you can check out are: Mercy Street, In Your Eyes, Come Talk to Me, Digging in the Dirt (great lyrics!), Steam, Sky Blue, Washing of the Water, Secret World (Live performance of this is better than the album--a rare occurance!). Peter knows how to PERFORM. I have seen him so many times in concert and am never disappointed! Worth some Reactions!
